Most freshwater angelfish sold in aquariums are selectively bred forms of Pterophyllum scalare; names such as Silver, Zebra, Koi, and Marble describe appearance rather than separate species. This guide compares ten familiar trade labels by their visible traits and clarifies that Veiltail refers to fin shape, while some labels can be combined.
What are freshwater angelfish varieties?
Freshwater angelfish are South American fish in the genus Pterophyllum. Aqueon notes that most angelfish in the aquarium hobby are P. scalare, while the U.S. Geological Survey describes color variants of this species in the trade. Familiar variety names are hobby or seller labels, not a standardized scientific ranking.
Labels can overlap: a fish may combine a color or pattern with a fin trait. A Texas A&M AgriLife Extension fact sheet, for example, lists combined labels such as “Gold Blushing Pearl Scale Veil.” Consider the individual fish’s appearance and ask the seller how they use a name.
These are freshwater fish, not marine angelfish. Marine angelfish belong to a different family and require saltwater care.

10 familiar freshwater angelfish varieties
| Trade label | What the label describes | What to look for |
|---|---|---|
| Silver | Color and pattern | Silver body with dark vertical bars; a useful baseline for comparing other forms. |
| Zebra | Pattern | Additional vertical bars distinguish its striped appearance in hobby usage. |
| Marble | Pattern | Mottled or irregular markings; patterning can appear alongside other traits. |
| Koi | Color and pattern | A multicolor trade form. Sellers may not use the name identically. |
| Gold | Color | A gold-toned appearance; this label can be combined with other traits. |
| Black | Color | A dark color form. The label does not establish a separate species. |
| Black Lace | Pattern | A lace-like or netted pattern; trade descriptions can overlap with other pattern labels. |
| Platinum | Trade color label | A hobby label for a pale form; the sources reviewed do not establish a precise defining appearance. |
| Blushing | Trade trait label | Appears in combined trade names, including Gold Blushing forms; it is not a separate species. |
| Veiltail | Fin form | Long fins rather than a particular body color; it may be combined with color or pattern labels. |
Silver, Zebra, Marble, Koi, Gold, Black, and Lace are appearance or pattern labels used in the trade. Veiltail describes extended fins. Platinum and Blushing are also used as hobby labels, but the sources reviewed do not establish a universal standard for their exact appearance. MPEDA lists several common trade forms, including Zebra, Marble, Koi, Gold, Black, and Lace; the Texas A&M fact sheet documents combined labels.
How to choose an angelfish
- Choose based on the fish’s visible appearance, not just the shop label. Trade names can overlap and are not standardized.
- Check the adult dimensions and plan an aquarium with suitable height and swimming room. The National Aquarium reports freshwater angelfish can reach up to 7 inches long.
- Consider the aquarium setup and tankmates before buying. Aqueon discusses gentle water flow, broadleaf plants, and vertically arranged driftwood as setup considerations.
- Ask the seller about the fish’s current appearance and any combined traits if a particular pattern matters to you.
Adult size and setup needs matter more than color when planning an aquarium. The National Aquarium describes angelfish as South American fish from the Amazon River Basin and other rivers. Its natural-history account notes a varied wild diet that includes insects, worms, fish fry, fish eggs, and algae; that description is not a specific commercial feeding prescription.
