The safest practical way to manage spiders around pets is to prevent entry and hiding places, then remove indoor spiders and webs physically. Identify a spider before choosing a treatment: most are harmless and helpful, and no household method guarantees a spider-free home. Keep traps and any pest-control products out of pets’ reach, and ask a local Extension office for help if you cannot identify a spider.
These 13 actions are parts of a prevention routine, not 13 proven repellents. Start with the steps that fit where spiders are appearing and whether you need prevention or removal.
13 practical ways to manage spiders around pets
1. Identify the spider before treating
Spiders can be helpful, especially outdoors, where they eat insect pests. If you are unsure what you found, take a photo from a safe distance and ask a local Extension office or qualified professional to help identify it. As the National Pesticide Information Center (NPIC) advises, “Identify the type of spider(s) before choosing a treatment strategy.”
2. Seal cracks in the foundation
Inspect the foundation and lower walls for openings that could let spiders or their insect prey inside. Seal suitable small gaps with a product intended for that surface and location, following its label. Do not block required ventilation.

3. Close gaps around doors and windows
Check frames and edges for gaps, then seal openings where appropriate. Choose caulk or another sealing product suited to the material and follow the product directions.
4. Repair screens and improve door fit
Repair loose or damaged window screens. Check door fit and use suitable weather stripping or a door sweep if there is a gap. Inspect less-used openings, too, such as basement windows and garage doors.
5. Reduce indoor clutter
Dark, undisturbed places provide hiding spots. Clear out items you do not need, and periodically inspect and clean storage areas such as closets, basements, and garages. Wear gloves when moving items that have been left undisturbed.
6. Store belongings in closed boxes
Use closed containers for suitable stored belongings, particularly in dark areas. Inspect items before moving them, and avoid reaching blindly into boxes or other hidden spaces.

8. Remove indoor webs
Vacuum webs from corners and other indoor spots where they are unwanted. Repeated removal can displace spiders, as Cornell Integrated Pest Management notes, but it does not address entry gaps or the conditions that attract them. Pair removal with prevention steps.
9. Capture and release an isolated spider
For a spider you can approach safely, place a jar or other container over it, slide stiff paper underneath, and carry it outside when appropriate. Do not handle an unidentified spider directly, and keep pets away during removal.
10. Reduce indoor insect prey
Spiders may be present where insects are available as food. Keep food and rubbish managed, clean up spills, and address household insect problems using appropriate methods. Reducing prey can make indoor areas less attractive, but it is not a stand-alone spider treatment.

Reduce sheltered areas near the home by clearing unnecessary debris and keeping firewood and other stored materials away from the structure. Use gloves and avoid reaching into hidden spaces when moving materials.
12. Trim plants away from the structure
Cut back shrubs or other vegetation that touches the house, especially near doors, windows, and other openings. The aim is to reduce direct connections to the building, not to eliminate beneficial spiders from the garden.

- NO MORE SPIDER WEBS: TERRO Cobweb Eliminator prevents future web formation and keeps spiders from coming back
- EASY TO USE: Simply knock down existing webs then spray the target area to prevent webs from returning
- FAST ACTING FORMULA: The Cobweb Eliminator spray starts working immediately
- LONG LASTING RESULTS: The spray offers residual repellency to make sure you have continued web prevention
- GREAT FOR PORCH LIGHTS: Ideal for use around porch lights and other areas where spiders commonly build webs
13. Change outdoor lighting near the house
Outdoor lights can attract insects, which may in turn attract spiders to nearby webs. Turn off lights that are not needed, consider yellow or cooler LED bulbs, or move fixtures farther from doors and windows where practical. These changes reduce an attraction; they do not guarantee spider control.

What to know about oils, traps, and diatomaceous earth
Essential oils: The authoritative sources reviewed for this guide do not establish that essential oils reliably repel spiders or are safe for every pet. Do not present sprays made with peppermint, eucalyptus, citrus, or other oils as proven, universally safe control. Avoid applying oils where pets can lick or contact them.
Sticky traps: These may help monitor or capture spiders, but they are not a complete prevention plan. Place them where pets and children cannot access them, and check them regularly.
Diatomaceous earth: “Natural” does not mean risk-free. NPIC cautions that airborne dust can irritate the nose and eyes. Use only a pesticide product labeled for the intended pest and location, follow its directions, and keep pets away during application as instructed. Food-grade diatomaceous earth that is not labeled for pest control has untested and unknown effectiveness and risks; do not assume it is suitable for pest treatment.
Pesticide sprays: UC Integrated Pest Management says spraying is difficult unless a spider is directly observed and provides only temporary control without housekeeping. If you choose to use a pesticide, NPIC advises, “read the label before you buy.” Follow the product label and keep pets away as directed.

Do not assume a red or swollen area is a spider bite: symptoms can resemble an allergic reaction, an insect sting, or a skin infection. Contact a veterinarian if the area worsens or does not improve within 24 hours, following Texas A&M veterinary guidance. Seek veterinary advice sooner if your pet seems seriously unwell. Do not handle a suspected spider to identify it; a photo from a safe distance may help a professional.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I keep spiders out of my house with pets?
Seal suitable gaps, repair screens, improve door fit, reduce clutter, and limit insect prey and outdoor attractions near the structure. Remove indoor spiders and webs physically, and place any sticky traps where pets cannot reach them.
Are essential oils safe for pets and effective against spiders?
The reviewed authoritative sources do not establish reliable spider-repellent efficacy or safety for every pet. Do not rely on essential-oil sprays as a proven solution or use them where pets can lick or contact them.
Is food-grade diatomaceous earth safe to use around pets?
Do not assume food-grade diatomaceous earth is appropriate for pest control. NPIC says the effectiveness and risks of products not labeled for pest control are untested and unknown, and airborne dust can irritate the nose and eyes. Use only products labeled for the intended pest and location, following their directions.
Should I use sticky traps if I have pets?
They can be used for monitoring or capture only if pets and children cannot reach them. Check and dispose of traps according to their directions.

When should I ask for professional help?
Contact a local Extension office or qualified pest-management professional if you cannot identify a spider, encounters persist, or you are concerned about a potentially hazardous species. Ask about inspection and prevention measures before considering a pesticide.
A practical plan
- Identify: Photograph an uncertain spider from a safe distance and seek local identification help.
- Remove: Vacuum indoor spiders, webs, and egg cases, or use a jar and paper for an isolated spider when safe.
- Prevent entry: Seal suitable gaps, repair screens, and improve door fit.
- Reduce shelter and prey: Declutter, manage indoor insects, clear outdoor debris, and trim vegetation touching the structure.
- Reassess: Check whether sightings continue and seek local professional guidance if they do.
These steps aim to reduce encounters, not promise eradication. If you use a pest-control product, choose one labeled for the intended pest and location, follow its directions, and keep pets away as the label instructs.
