To travel safely with a pet, first decide with your veterinarian whether the trip suits your pet’s health and temperament. Then check the destination and transport provider’s current rules, use secure and familiar equipment, keep your pet identified and supervised, and pack for routine care and delays.

There is no single safest travel mode for every pet. The right choice depends on your pet, itinerary, route conditions, and the rules of the destination and carrier.

1. Decide whether travel is right for your pet

Consider your pet’s health, age, injury history, temperament, and ability to tolerate the trip. Some pets may be better off with a reliable sitter or suitable boarding. Short-nosed pets, including Pugs and Persians, can face greater breathing or overheating risks, particularly during air travel. Ask your veterinarian about your pet and the specific itinerary before making plans.

2. Start veterinary and destination planning early

Ask your veterinarian about fitness to travel, vaccinations, parasite prevention, and any destination-specific tests or documents. Requirements and deadlines depend on the destination and mode of travel, so verify them with the destination authority and your veterinarian before booking. The American Veterinary Medical Association’s 2023 pet-travel brochure notes that some trips may require a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection within a specified period before departure; confirm the current timing for your trip.

  • Plenty of air ventilation on the sides, top, and back of the carrier
  • Note: Be sure to measure the size of the pet when choosing carrier size

If a pet’s health or the required paperwork makes the trip unsuitable, consider changing plans or arranging care at home.

3. Check transport-provider rules before booking

Airline rules can vary by pet size, breed, carrier dimensions, season, weather, and availability in the cabin or cargo area. Check the current policy for your exact route before buying equipment or booking. If traveling by bus or rail, contact that operator directly as well. Do not assume that a policy from a different provider or route applies.

Travel option What to check Safety considerations
Car Suitable restraint or carrier and planned stops Secure dogs; keep cats in carriers; never leave a pet unattended in the vehicle.
Air Current route-specific pet, carrier, cabin, or cargo rules Consider your pet’s health and temperature exposure; short-nosed pets can have additional risks.
Bus or rail The operator’s rules for pets, carriers, and the route Confirm whether your pet can travel comfortably and safely under those conditions.

The best option depends on the individual pet and itinerary; no travel mode is universally safest.

5. Acclimate your pet to its carrier or restraint

Give your pet time to get used to its carrier, crate, or restraint before departure. Let the pet investigate the equipment at its own pace and practice short trips before a long journey. Bring familiar items if suitable, and use secure equipment that fits your pet and meets the transport provider’s current rules.

A pet travel carrier may be useful for air travel or for keeping a cat safely confined in a car. Check fit and provider requirements before purchasing. A back-seat pet car harness is a possible option for a dog if it fits properly and is suitable for the vehicle.

Keep your pet’s head inside the vehicle, plan stops on long journeys, and maintain normal feeding and relief routines where possible.

Never leave a pet unattended in a car, even in the shade or with the windows cracked. The American Veterinary Medical Association warns that a car can heat to dangerous temperatures quickly. Secure your pet before driving and keep it supervised whenever you stop.
