Researchers can measure photoreceptors, spectral sensitivity, and behavior, but those measurements do not let us know exactly what a fish subjectively experiences.
Examples show why a single “fish-eye view” is misleading: zebrafish have well-studied color-processing circuitry, goldfish color discrimination can change with light level, reef fishes vary in their visual pigments, and open-water fish face trade-offs between seeing faint light and resolving detail.
How to interpret evidence about fish vision
Rods are generally more sensitive in dim light, while cones work best in brighter conditions and respond to different parts of the spectrum. Comparing cone signals can contribute to color vision, but receptor counts or opsin genes alone do not prove what distinctions a fish can make. Neural processing and behavioral tests matter too. These are broad tendencies, not a universal description of every fish. (Carleton et al., “Seeing the rainbow: mechanisms underlying spectral sensitivity in teleost fishes,” 2020; Baden and Osorio, “The Retinal Basis of Vertebrate Color Vision,” 2019.)
Visual acuity—the ability to resolve detail—also depends on conditions such as light and contrast. As Caves, Sutton, Warrant, and Johnsen put it in their 2023 study, “Eyes in low-light environments typically must balance sensitivity and spatial resolution.”

Fish vision compared: what studies show
| Example | What the evidence says | What not to conclude |
|---|---|---|
| Zebrafish | A 2019 review describes rich retinal color circuitry and photoreceptor distributions that vary across larval zebrafish retinas. | That all fish have the same cone arrangement or color-processing system. |
| Goldfish | A 2019 review discusses an experiment in which goldfish failed to discriminate between 555 nm and 663 nm under lower mesopic light conditions. | That goldfish simply cannot see red. The finding applies to a particular comparison and light condition. |
| Coral-reef fishes | A 2020 review reports that most of the reef-fish species it covered were trichromatic; studied species had two to four cone spectral sensitivities. It also describes pigment shifts associated with greener inshore and bluer open-water habitats. | That all reef fishes—or all fishes—have the same color vision. |
| Open-water and mesopelagic fishes | A 2023 study examined visual acuity in epipelagic and mesopelagic teleosts and elasmobranchs. It reported that acuity in lower-mesopelagic species deeper than 600 m exceeded model predictions, consistent with visual localization of bioluminescent point sources. | That every deep-water fish sees alike or is color-blind. |
The reef-fish figures describe the species covered in that review, not all reef fishes. The study’s depth descriptions place the mesopelagic zone at 200–1000 m; these values are context for that research, not a complete account of every animal’s habitat. (Sweeney et al., “Visual system diversity in coral reef fishes,” 2020; Caves et al., “Measures and models of visual acuity in epipelagic and mesopelagic teleosts and elasmobranchs,” 2023.)
Why species and habitat matter
Teleost fishes differ in their visual opsin repertoires and pigment sensitivities. These differences are associated with underwater light habitats, ecology, and color-based sexual selection, according to Musilova, Salzburger, and Cortesi’s 2021 review of teleost visual opsins. Water depth and habitat can change the light available, but a measured pigment sensitivity is evidence of potential—not by itself proof of how a fish sees a scene or uses color in a task.

- Strong Compatibility: The specific size of our aquarium filter cartridge is 6 in L x 4.5 in W. It is very suitable for PF20, PF30, PF40 and PF75 Power Filters. With this aquarium filter cartridge, you can keep your fish tank water healthy every moment. It contains 15 pack aquarium filter cottons, which you can change every 2-4 weeks.
- Excellent Filtration Performance: The filter cotton is made of cotton and carbon and has 3-layer filtering effect, which can filter and absorb 99% of the sundries, so as to keep the water source clean and the healthy growth of fish.
- Long-term Replacement of the Aquarium Filter: According to the test, the filter cotton has already withstood too much sundries for no more than four weeks, so you need to replace it with a new one to keep the water source healthy and clean at all times. Suggest to change filter cartridge every 2-4 weeks.
- Quick Installation: Just remove used cartridge and rinse new cartridge under cool water to remove dust. After rinsing, insert caftridge into flter chamber to protect the health and safety of your fish all the time.
- High-quality After-sales Service: HiTauing produces high-quality filter cartridges for fish tank filter, and is in a leading position in the quality and craftsmanship of all our products. We maintain a thorough quality control process to ensure compatibility with PF20, PF30, PF40 and PF75 Power Filters. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us!
Even members of the same broad group should not be treated as interchangeable. Visual systems can vary with life stage, and a species’ activity and environment affect the visual demands it faces. The available evidence supports particular examples, not a comprehensive ranking of every fish species.
What a fish “view” can—and cannot—tell us
A human-made image claiming to show what a fish sees is necessarily an approximation. A responsible account should identify the species and conditions, say whether its evidence is anatomical, molecular, physiological, or behavioral, and avoid turning a receptor measurement into a claim about subjective experience.

Color discrimination is especially important to describe carefully. A fish may have receptors sensitive to different wavelengths, yet whether it distinguishes two stimuli can depend on illumination and the task being tested. As Carleton and colleagues emphasize, behavioral experiments are needed to establish whether differences in spectral sensitivity matter for relevant visual tasks.

Do all fish see the same colors?
No. Fish species differ in their opsins, visual pigments, and retinal organization. Available light and experimental conditions also matter, and receptor evidence alone does not establish what colors a fish can behaviorally distinguish.

Can fish see color in dim light?
Rods generally become more important as light falls, while cones tend to support vision in brighter conditions. The balance and resulting abilities vary, so it is not accurate to say that every fish switches to the same black-and-white view.
Can goldfish see red?
A 2019 review discusses a goldfish experiment in which fish failed to discriminate between 555 nm and 663 nm under lower mesopic conditions. That specific result is not proof that goldfish can never detect or distinguish red under other conditions.

Do deep-sea fish have poor vision?
Not as a general rule. Low-light vision involves trade-offs between sensitivity and spatial resolution, and deep-sea species differ. A 2023 study reported unexpectedly high acuity relative to model predictions in the lower-mesopelagic species it examined.
Can scientists know exactly what a fish sees?
Scientists can measure visual structures, spectral sensitivity, acuity, and behavioral responses. Those results can inform models of vision, but they do not directly reveal a fish’s subjective experience.
