Georgia DNR confirmed that a nuisance-alligator response led to an alligator being released in a remote location, but could not confirm it was Wally. The sources checked for this article found no reliable later report confirming Wally’s recovery, so his current whereabouts remain unverified.
Who is Wally the alligator?
Wally, also known as WallyGator, is an alligator owned by Pennsylvania resident Joie Henney. Henney said he obtained Wally in 2015 after the alligator had been rescued in Florida, and that Wally helped him cope with depression. “Emotional-support alligator” describes Henney’s account of their relationship; it does not establish that Wally was a trained service animal or had a legal right to enter public places.
Wally drew wider attention through social-media videos and news coverage. In September 2023, the Philadelphia Phillies denied Wally entry to Citizens Bank Park. The club’s policy, as quoted by the Associated Press, welcomed guide dogs, service animals and service animals in training, and prohibited other animals. That example is specific to the ballpark and should not be treated as a rule for every venue.
What Henney says happened
Henney said Wally disappeared on April 21, 2024, while they were visiting friends in Brunswick. According to his account, Wally was taken from an outdoor enclosure, and pranksters left the alligator outside a resident’s home. The resident contacted authorities.

| Wally was taken from an outdoor enclosure, left at a resident’s home, then captured and released. | A nuisance-alligator call, trapper response and remote release of an alligator. | Whether the captured alligator was Wally, and what happened to Wally afterward. |
The distinction matters: confirmation of an alligator response and release does not prove Wally was recovered, that he was the animal captured, or that officials knowingly released Henney’s pet. The Associated Press reported on May 1, 2024, that no police report had been filed with Brunswick or Glynn County police at that time; that report does not establish whether one was filed later.
What is known about Wally’s current status?
The disappearance was reported in 2024, not newly confirmed. The research checked for this article found no reliable later report confirming that Wally was recovered. His current whereabouts and ultimate fate therefore remain unverified by the sources checked; that is not proof of what happened to him.

Could Wally legally be kept in Pennsylvania?
Associated Press reporting in 2024 said Pennsylvania had no state law against owning alligators but prohibited owners from releasing them into the wild. It also reported that Georgia requires a special license or permit to keep alligators and that Georgia DNR does not grant permits for pet alligators. These are jurisdiction-specific statements reported in 2024, not a substitute for checking current state and local rules.
How dangerous are alligators?
Georgia DNR wildlife biologist and coastal supervisor David Mixon told the Associated Press that alligators are unpredictable and often react to stimulus. He also cautioned that spending more time around them makes injury more likely. Do not approach, touch, feed, capture or try to transport an alligator, even if it appears calm.

How did Wally disappear?
Henney said Wally was taken from an outdoor enclosure in Brunswick on April 21, 2024, and later described an alligator being found at a resident’s home and released after a trapper responded. Those details are his account; officials did not confirm the captured animal was Wally.
What happened to Wally after the alligator was released?
The sources checked found no reliable later report confirming Wally’s recovery or death. His current whereabouts remain unverified.
Does an emotional-support designation mean an alligator can enter public places?
No. Henney’s description of Wally as an emotional-support animal does not establish service-animal training or public-access rights. The Phillies’ policy is one specific venue’s rule, not a universal policy.
