In the United States, becoming a therapy-dog team means choosing a private organization, meeting its requirements, passing its evaluation, and arranging visits with facilities that accept the organization. Start by asking the facility where you hope to volunteer which organizations it accepts; requirements, local evaluator availability, and ongoing rules vary. Therapy-dog certification does not make a dog a service animal or grant general public-access rights.
What therapy-dog certification means
A therapy dog visits other people with its handler in settings such as schools, hospitals, and nursing homes. The dog’s role is to provide comfort and companionship during approved visits, under the handler’s supervision.
Certification recognizes a dog-handler team under a particular organization’s program. The organization evaluates the team and sets its own requirements; a certificate or vest does not provide universal permission to enter facilities.
The American Kennel Club (AKC) does not certify therapy dogs. It offers optional titles recognizing qualifying visits by teams certified or registered through an AKC-recognized therapy-dog organization.

Therapy dogs, service dogs, and emotional-support animals
| Type | Role | General U.S. access position |
|---|---|---|
| Therapy-dog team | Visits other people in approved settings with a handler. | No special public-access rights; visits depend on facility approval and program rules. |
| Service dog | Is trained to perform tasks for a person with a disability. | Has protections under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), subject to its requirements. |
| Emotional-support animal | Provides emotional support to its owner through its presence. | Is not a service animal under the ADA just because it provides comfort. |
The ADA’s service-animal guidance distinguishes comfort from trained tasks. A therapy-dog vest, card, or certificate does not create access to restaurants, airplanes, or other places where the team has not been invited.
How to get started: an 8-step process
1. Decide what kind of volunteer work you want to do
Therapy teams visit other people; service dogs assist their handlers. Consider the settings you hope to visit and whether your dog is comfortable meeting unfamiliar people in those environments. The dog’s welfare and willingness should guide the decision.
2. Ask the intended facility what it accepts
Before choosing a program, contact the hospital, school, nursing home, or other facility where you hope to volunteer. Ask which therapy-dog organizations it accepts and what screening, orientation, scheduling, vaccination, and visit rules it requires. A facility may have requirements beyond those of a certification organization.
3. Compare organizations and local availability
Programs differ in coursework, evaluation, supervised practice, insurance terms, fees, and ongoing participation rules. Check that an evaluator or other required local support is available before applying. ATD says its alternative review process is paused, so applicants should confirm the current route and local Tester/Observer availability.

| Organization | Published pathway | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Alliance of Therapy Dogs (ATD) | Its current process includes finding a local Tester/Observer, a background check and paperwork, a handling assessment, and three to four supervised observations, including two in medical facilities. The office reviews the application after submission. | Local evaluator availability, current forms and fees, facility acceptance, health and bite-history policies, and ongoing visit requirements. |
| Pet Partners | Describes handler education, team evaluation, certification, and liability insurance with registration. Handler coursework is required before the first visit. | Current course and evaluation requirements, local options, insurance terms, and renewal or participation rules. |
| Therapy Dogs International (TDI) | Describes an evaluation administered by a certified TDI evaluator. | Current eligibility, testing, equipment, membership, and participation rules directly with TDI. |
Do not assume programs are interchangeable or that one is best for everyone. Choose based on facility acceptance, local availability, application requirements, cost, and the program’s terms.
4. Check your dog’s readiness and eligibility
Calm, manageable behavior matters more than breed. ATD says any breed or mix may qualify. It describes a suitable dog as calm and gentle, comfortable with handling by strangers and around other dogs, not jumping on people, and able to walk on leash without pulling. Consider whether your dog can cope with unfamiliar sounds, equipment, and movement without distress.
Eligibility rules are organization-specific. ATD requires dogs to be at least one year old. Its published health requirements include vaccines required by local law and a negative fecal test every 12 months, along with cleanliness and grooming expectations. ATD states that dogs with a bite history are excluded from testing, with an exception for puppy bites in dogs aged nine months or younger unless reported to authorities. Confirm current policies with ATD before applying; do not treat them as universal rules or conceal an incident.
If your dog is fearful, reactive, uncomfortable with touch, or unable to recover from ordinary surprises, pause and consider whether visits are appropriate. Do not push a dog into therapy work for the sake of earning a certificate.

5. Build everyday manners and handler skills
Practice calm greetings, walking beside you without pulling, settling quietly, and accepting gentle handling from unfamiliar people. Work gradually in environments with distractions such as unfamiliar surfaces, mobility equipment, and unexpected movement. A comfortable standard leash is a useful practice item, not a specified certification requirement.
The handler also needs to read the dog’s stress signals, maintain control, ask permission before interactions, protect the dog from unwanted contact, and end a visit when either the dog or recipient is uncomfortable. Training classes can help prepare a team, but they do not replace an organization’s evaluation.
6. Complete the application and evaluation
Follow the selected organization’s current instructions and use its forms. ATD’s current route includes locating a Tester/Observer, passing a Sterling Volunteers background check, submitting paperwork including a veterinarian-signed health verification form, reviewing the rules, and passing a handling assessment. Its listed paperwork also includes a membership application and an assumption-of-risk and release form.
For ATD, confirm current fees before applying. Its current listing gives a $20 background-check cost, a $20 one-time new-member fee, and a $35 annual fee; it says the background check is valid for one year. Applicants under 18 do not need that check under its junior-handler guidance. These are ATD-specific listed fees and rules, not industry-wide costs.

7. Complete supervised observations and obtain approval
Passing an assessment alone does not guarantee membership. ATD requires three to four supervised observations, including two in medical facilities. The Tester/Observer signs required paperwork, and ATD’s office reviews the application. Follow the selected organization’s process through final approval before arranging visits as a certified team.
8. Follow facility rules, maintain membership, and log visits
Before visiting, learn the facility’s scheduling, consent, privacy, infection-control, and incident-reporting rules. Let each person choose whether to interact, and leave if the dog becomes tired or stressed.
Ongoing requirements differ by organization. ATD requires at least one in-person volunteer visit every three months to remain in good standing and asks members to log visits in its portal. Check your organization’s current terms rather than assuming the same rule applies everywhere.

According to the AKC, one visit means one day at one facility: seeing multiple people at that facility on the same day counts as one visit, while visits to separate facilities on the same day count separately. Keep the documentation the AKC currently requires, including visit details and facility verification. Titles recognize documented work; they do not certify a dog or grant public access.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the AKC certify therapy dogs?
No. The AKC says certification and training are handled by therapy-dog organizations. Its titles recognize qualifying work after certification or registration through an eligible organization.
Does therapy-dog certification let my dog go anywhere?
No. It does not grant the public-access rights of a service dog. Visits depend on facility approval and the applicable organization’s and facility’s rules.
Does every therapy-dog organization have the same requirements?
No. Organizations set their own application, evaluation, health, supervised-visit, fee, insurance, and ongoing participation rules. Check directly with the program and the facility where you plan to volunteer.
How many supervised visits does ATD require?
ATD’s current join information calls for three to four supervised observations, including two in medical facilities. Confirm its current process and local evaluator availability before applying.
How many visits count toward an AKC Therapy Dog title?
The current thresholds range from 10 visits for Therapy Dog Novice to 600 for Therapy Dog Supreme. The AKC counts one day at one facility as one visit, regardless of how many people the team sees there that day.
