The Bloodhound is a large, affectionate scent hound whose nose can draw it toward a trail despite training. Owners should plan for daily exercise and sniffing, secure fencing and leashed walks, regular ear and coat care, drool cleanup, and veterinary planning for a giant dog.
It may suit people who can manage a strong, independent dog and provide several daily outings and enrichment. Apartment living can be challenging and requires a dedicated exercise schedule; a yard alone does not meet the breed’s needs.
Quick answer: what is a Bloodhound like?
Bloodhounds are powerful, scent-driven dogs. The American Kennel Club standard describes them as affectionate and sensitive to kindness or correction, but breed descriptions do not guarantee an individual dog’s temperament. They are social with other dogs in general, though their size and strength call for supervision around young children.
This is not usually a low-maintenance choice for someone seeking dependable off-leash obedience or a dog that can be left unstimulated for long periods. Consider the individual dog’s temperament, exercise needs, household setup, and your ability to manage it safely.

- 2-IN-1 DUAL SIDE GROOMING GLOVE — RUBBER BRUSH AND VELOUR FUR REMOVER: One glove, two grooming tools. The rubber bristle side brushes, massages, and loosens fur during grooming or bathing. Flip to the velour side to remove fur from clothing.
- RUBBER BRISTLE SIDE FOR WET OR DRY BRUSHING AND MASSAGING: The paw-shaped silicone and rubber bristle side can be used dry for regular brushing and massaging, or wet during bath time for a deeper lather, scrubbing, and coat cleanse.
- VELOUR SIDE FOR LIFTING FUR FROM CLOTHING AND FURNITURE: The velour side of this grooming glove works as a lint-style fur remover — use it to sweep loose pet hair from clothing, upholstery, furniture, and other fabrics between grooming sessions.
- FLEXIBLE RUBBER PAW SHAPE — COMFORTABLE FIT FOR GROOMING: The flexible, paw-shaped rubber brush conforms to your pet's body for an effective, comfortable groom. Note: this glove is one size and may run slightly large for smaller hands.
- WORKS ON DOGS AND CATS — SHORT OR LONG COATS: The rubber grooming side works effectively on dogs and cats with a range of coat lengths. Short-haired breeds especially benefit from the rubber bristle action for undercoat removal and shine.
Bloodhound appearance, size, and colors
The Bloodhound has a powerful build, loose skin especially around the head and neck, a long narrow head, and long, low-set ears. The American Kennel Club standard gives average adult heights of 26 inches for males and 24 inches for females, and average weights of 90 pounds and 80 pounds respectively. Its usual height ranges are 25–27 inches for males and 23–25 inches for females. These are standard descriptions, not a guarantee of an individual dog’s adult size.
The breed club advises prospective owners to be prepared for a dog around 100 pounds or more, as taller dogs may weigh more. Plan for a large dog when choosing a crate, bed, vehicle restraint, bowls, and fencing.
Temperament and family life
Bloodhounds are known for following scent persistently. They may seem to ignore a cue when an odor captures their attention; plan around that instinct rather than relying on recall alone. Their size and strength can also make an exuberant dog difficult for a child to handle.
Bloodhounds and children
A Bloodhound may be a good family companion, but supervise all interactions with children. Teach children not to climb on, disturb, or take food and toys from the dog, and give the dog a quiet space to rest.
Bloodhounds with other pets
The breed club describes Bloodhounds as generally social with other dogs. Introduce animals gradually, assess each individual’s behavior, and supervise early interactions. Do not leave them together unsupervised until their relationship is reliably safe.

Exercise, housing, and safety
Bloodhounds need daily physical activity and opportunities to use their noses. The American Bloodhound Club lists walks, swimming, fetch, tracking, obedience, and leash hikes as possible activities. Adjust activity to age, health, and conditioning; the club specifies jogging only for adult hounds.
- Schedule walks and other activity several times through the day, especially if you live in an apartment.
- Allow controlled sniffing and try tracking or other structured scent games.
- Use short training sessions and enrichment, such as suitable food puzzles.
- Build activity gradually and ask your veterinarian for guidance about a puppy, older dog, or dog with health concerns.
Leashes and fencing
A Bloodhound following a scent may not respond to calls and may lack road sense. Keep the dog on leash outside a secure, physically fenced area. The breed club advises secure above-ground fencing; do not rely on invisible fencing as dependable containment. Inspect gates, latches, gaps, and digging areas regularly.
Can Bloodhounds live in an apartment?
They can, but apartment living is rarely easy. The breed club says it takes a dedicated schedule of exercise several times a day, in varied weather. Consider whether you can provide that routine and safely manage a large dog in shared spaces.

Adapt activity to the weather and your dog’s condition. Provide shade and clean water, and avoid strenuous activity in heat. If your dog seems distressed, weak, uncoordinated, or collapses, seek urgent veterinary care.
Training and socialization
Start socialization and basic training early, using gradual, positive exposure to people, dogs, handling, and new environments. Patient, consistent, reward-based training can make the dog’s interest in scent an asset: reward check-ins, returning attention to you, and calm behavior.

Use management as well as training: secure gates, leashes, and fencing prevent dangerous escapes while skills develop. Do not test recall near roads or other hazards. A Bloodhound may never be safe to roam off leash outside a secure area.
Bloodhound grooming and home setup
Care is regular rather than elaborate. The breed club recommends weekly coat brushing, routine ear and eye care, and nail trimming. Check the dewlap and facial folds for irritation, and introduce handling early so grooming is less stressful.

- Brush the coat weekly and check the skin for irritation.
- Clean the ears routinely, following breeder or veterinarian guidance on products; seek veterinary advice for pain, odor, redness, or discharge.
- Check the eyes and skin folds, including the dewlap, and ask a veterinarian about irritation or other changes.
- Trim nails as needed and accustom the dog to paw handling from a young age.
- Keep towels handy: many Bloodhounds drool, and owners may need to wipe the lips after drinking.
Washable bedding and easy-to-clean stainless-steel bowls can help with mess. A crate sized for the adult dog can support supervision and housetraining; measure the individual dog and follow manufacturer sizing guidance rather than choosing a universal dimension. Give dogs separate spaces around food and special toys, and keep dangerous or tempting household objects out of reach.
Bloodhound health and veterinary care
Bloat and gastric torsion are life-threatening emergencies. Learn the signs with your veterinarian and seek immediate veterinary care if you suspect them. A suddenly distended or painful abdomen, repeated unproductive retching, restlessness, weakness, pale gums, or collapse can be warning signs, but symptoms vary and are not a diagnosis.
The American Bloodhound Club lists risk-management suggestions such as several smaller meals, slowing a fast eater, soaking kibble, and avoiding heavy exercise before or after meals. These suggestions do not eliminate risk or replace individualized veterinary advice. A slow feeder may help a fast eater, but it does not prevent bloat.

Ask breeders for documentation of hip, elbow, and heart screening for both parents. The breed club also encourages prospective owners to consider breed rescue and assess a rescue dog with a knowledgeable rescue organization and veterinarian. Screening and careful selection cannot guarantee a problem-free dog.
The UK Bloodhound Club reports that the UK Kennel Club reclassified the breed as Category 2 effective 1 January 2025, and notes concern about low uptake of hip and elbow testing. This is a UK show-breed classification, not a diagnosis or a prediction for an individual dog.
Bloodhound lifespan
Published estimates differ: the American Kennel Club lists 10–12 years, while VCA lists 7–10 years. Lifespan varies among individual dogs and is not guaranteed.
Practical ownership costs and preparation
Food, equipment, transport, fencing, and veterinary care must accommodate a large, powerful dog. Before bringing one home, plan for a crate that will fit the adult dog, washable bedding, cleanable bowls, towels, suitable walking equipment, and a secure physically fenced area. Budget for routine veterinary care, training, and possible emergency treatment.
