No periodical-cicada brood is listed as expected to emerge in 2026 on the USDA Forest Service brood map. That forecast does not rule out annual cicadas, isolated off-schedule periodical cicadas, or local sightings. For pet owners, the key point is that cicadas are generally not harmful to pets, though eating many can cause temporary stomach upset or vomiting.

What cicadas are appearing in the South in 2026?

The USDA Forest Service periodical-cicada brood map lists no brood expected to emerge in 2026. It is a forecast reference based on county data compiled for a 2011 publication, not a live count of sightings. Because “the South” covers a broad area, check county extension or state natural-resources updates for local information.

Hearing cicadas or seeing a few insects does not establish that a 17-year brood has emerged. Annual cicadas appear every year, and individual periodical cicadas may emerge off schedule.

Annual cicadas versus periodical cicadas

The distinction is mainly about life cycle and whether the insects are part of a synchronized brood. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) describes periodical adults as having black bodies, red-brown eyes, and wings with orange veins.

Feature Annual cicadas Periodical cicadas
Life cycle Appear every year Come out in synchronized broods on 13- or 17-year cycles
What a sighting means Ordinary seasonal cicada activity A brood emergence should be checked against expected brood and county information
Adult appearance Varies by species EPA describes black bodies, red-brown eyes, and orange-veined wings

Periodical cicadas are about 1–1.5 inches long, with a wingspan about twice that length, according to the EPA. Appearance can help with identification, but a cicada sighting alone does not confirm a brood.

What should I do if I see periodical-looking cicadas?

  1. Note the date and location, including the county.
  2. Compare the location with expected brood information from the Forest Service map.
  3. For a local assessment, consult county extension or state natural-resources updates.
  4. Do not describe isolated sightings as a new or widespread brood without confirmation.

Are cicadas dangerous to dogs and cats?

The EPA says cicadas are not harmful to pets. Under its general guidance, eating a small number is not a cause for concern. Eating many may temporarily upset a pet’s stomach or cause vomiting.

If your pet has symptoms, ate a large number, or has health concerns that make the situation uncertain, contact your veterinarian for case-specific guidance. This general information is not a diagnosis for an individual animal.

Why you should not spray cicadas by default

The EPA says pesticides are generally ineffective for keeping cicadas away because many more insects can move into treated areas. The University of Illinois Extension also notes that pesticide applications can harm other organisms, including animals that eat cicadas. Avoid routine spraying for general cicada presence, especially where pets or wildlife may encounter treated insects.
