Many animals hunt, forage, travel, or communicate after dark, but not all are strictly nocturnal. This gallery features 17 night-active animals, from echolocating bats to calling frogs; deer are mainly active around dawn and dusk, while red foxes may be active by day or night.

Nighttime behavior serves different purposes, including finding food, attracting mates, avoiding predators, and moving through habitat. Animals also rely on different senses and adaptations to navigate and feed when light is scarce.

17 night-active animals

1. Badger

Badgers often emerge after dark to search for food such as earthworms and other invertebrates. Their broad diets can also include fruit, bulbs, snails, slugs, and small mammals. While foraging, they may rely heavily on smell as they investigate the ground.

2. Bat

Bat diets vary by species: some eat insects, while others feed on fruit or nectar. Insect-eating bats consume insects; fruit-eating bats can help disperse seeds, and nectar-feeding bats can pollinate plants. Many bats use echolocation, emitting high-frequency sounds and interpreting returning echoes to navigate and locate prey.

3. Crab-eating fox

Native to South America, the crab-eating fox is often more active at night. Its varied diet can include frogs, lizards, rabbits, fish, crabs, and other crustaceans. Its name reflects one food it eats, not the limits of its diet.

4. Dormouse

Dormice are small, nocturnal climbers that search among branches and foliage for foods such as fruit, flowers, nuts, and insects. Some also hibernate for a substantial part of the year.

5. Frog

Many frogs and toads call after dusk, especially during breeding seasons. Their choruses help individuals attract mates, and nighttime activity may also reduce exposure to some daytime predators and heat.

6. Deer

Deer are mainly crepuscular, meaning they are commonly most active around dawn and dusk, but they may also travel or feed at night. Their schedules vary with species and circumstances, so a nighttime sighting does not mean all deer are nocturnal.

9. Kiwi

New Zealand’s flightless kiwi forages at night for invertebrates. It probes leaf litter and soil with its bill, whose nostrils are unusually located at the tip. Research has examined whether nighttime foraging helped kiwi avoid competition for resources with the now-extinct giant moa.

This small Southeast Asian primate is a nocturnal predator. Its large eyes help it detect prey in low light as it hunts insects, lizards, frogs, and other small animals.

11. Leopard

Leopards may use darkness to travel, stalk prey, and move with less chance of being seen. They may also drag a kill into a tree, where it is harder for competing predators to take. Leopards can be active at other times, too.

12. Opossum

Opossums are common nighttime foragers in many backyards. They eat insects and other invertebrates as well as a range of available foods. Although they may consume some invertebrates, they should not be treated as dependable garden pest control.

13. Owl

Many owls are effective nighttime hunters. Their adaptations can include eyes suited to gathering available light, asymmetrical ears that help some species locate sounds, and flight feathers that reduce noise. Not every owl follows the same schedule.

14. Porcupine

Porcupines are primarily nocturnal foragers that feed on plant material. Daytime sightings are possible, and activity patterns vary among species. “Mostly nocturnal” is more accurate than an absolute rule.

16. Civet

Many civets are active at night, though schedules and diets differ among species. Because “civet” refers to several related mammals found in parts of Africa and Asia, a photograph’s species and location should be confirmed from its credit or metadata.

17. Red fox

Red foxes can be active at different times of day. In urban areas, they may shift toward nighttime activity, when they can avoid people and traffic more easily. A fox seen after dark may simply be following a schedule suited to its surroundings.

How animals navigate after dark

Night-active animals do not all “see in the dark.” Some rely on eyesight adapted to low light, while others use hearing, smell, or touch. Many bats use echolocation: they produce sounds and use returning echoes to detect obstacles and prey.

There is no single reason animals are active at night. They may be finding food, attracting mates, avoiding predators, or moving through their habitat. Timing can also vary with species and circumstances.

Observing nighttime wildlife responsibly

A wildlife trail camera can record animals passing without requiring a photographer to remain nearby. Check local rules and obtain permission before placing one on private property. Do not bait, chase, handle, corner, or repeatedly illuminate animals to get a photograph, and avoid obstructing a den, nest, trail, or feeding site.

Keep a safe distance and use binoculars or a telephoto lens rather than moving closer. A photograph alone cannot establish whether an animal was photographed in the wild or captivity, or whether the photographer used flash, infrared, bait, or a camera trap; disclose those details only when documented.
