If your cat is panting with its mouth open, take it seriously. Cats do not typically pant like dogs. A brief episode after intense play or an identifiable stressful event may stop as the cat settles, but ongoing, unexplained, recurrent, or visibly difficult breathing needs prompt veterinary attention.

Go to an emergency veterinary hospital now for sustained or difficult breathing, abnormal gum color, collapse, or panting with other signs of illness. If heatstroke is possible, move your cat out of the heat and start veterinary transport immediately. Do not wait for an online diagnosis.

This article provides general triage information, not a diagnosis. Only a veterinarian can determine why a cat is panting.

First, check whether it is panting or the Flehmen response

True panting usually means rapid or shallow breathing with the mouth open. The cat may show increased effort, such as noticeable abdominal movement, or seem unable to rest comfortably.

That differs from the Flehmen response: after investigating a scent, a cat may briefly hold its mouth slightly open or curl its lip. This facial expression is not sustained rapid breathing.

Do not dismiss repeated open-mouth breathing or breathing that looks difficult as a facial expression.

When brief panting may happen

Intense activity or an identifiable stressful event, such as a car ride or veterinary visit, can trigger a brief episode. Stop the activity, let your cat settle in a calm, comfortable place, and watch without handling or exciting it. This limited observation is appropriate only if the panting stops promptly and the cat seems well. If there is no clear trigger, contact a veterinarian promptly.

After intense play or exertion

Some cats may pant briefly after unusually vigorous play. Stop the activity and let your cat rest in a calm place. If panting continues, returns, or the cat seems unwell, contact a veterinarian promptly. Breathing difficulty or other warning signs call for emergency care.

Fear, anxiety, or travel

Stress during travel, a veterinary visit, or intense handling may be associated with brief panting. Let your cat settle quietly. Do not assume stress is the cause if panting persists or recurs, there is no clear trigger, or your cat shows signs such as weakness, collapse, coughing, gagging, or increased effort to breathe.

Heat exposure

Panting after heat exposure can signal overheating or heatstroke, which is an emergency. Other warning signs can include excessive drooling, vomiting or retching, poor coordination, seizures, or inability to stand or walk.

Move your cat to a cooler area and begin veterinary transport. During transport, you can apply room-temperature or cool tap water with wet towels and use moving air from a fan or air conditioner. Do not use ice water or submerge your cat, and do not let cooling delay veterinary care.

Medical problems that can cause panting

Panting is a sign, not a diagnosis. Possible causes of breathing distress include:

  • Pleural effusion: fluid around the lungs can prevent them from expanding normally.
  • Pneumonia or other respiratory disease.
  • Airway obstruction, trauma, or pain.
  • Heartworm disease or anemia.

Cornell College of Veterinary Medicine describes dyspnea, or difficulty breathing, as a sign that can have different underlying causes. Its guidance warns that a cat with breathing difficulty is at high risk if treatment is delayed. A veterinarian must assess the cat to identify the cause and choose treatment.

Do not mistake asthma or airway trouble for a hairball

Coughing or hacking can look like an attempt to bring up a hairball. Repeated coughing, wheezing, open-mouth breathing, or failure to recover normally may indicate an airway or other respiratory problem. If your cat appears to be struggling for air, seek urgent veterinary care rather than waiting to see whether a hairball appears.

When to go to an emergency veterinarian

Go to an emergency veterinary hospital now if your cat has sustained or visibly difficult breathing, or panting with any of these warning signs:

  • Marked abdominal effort, rapid or shallow breathing, or inability to rest comfortably or lie flat.
  • Blue or purple, pale, white, gray, or otherwise abnormal gums or tongue.
  • Collapse, fainting, severe weakness, confusion, or unresponsiveness.
  • Coughing, gagging, choking, vomiting, excessive drooling, or suspected poisoning.
  • Panting after heat exposure, especially with poor coordination or inability to stand or walk.
  • Recent trauma followed by abnormal breathing.

The American Animal Hospital Association says a panting cat should be considered a medical emergency. Cornell likewise advises prompt veterinary care for breathing difficulty. If you are unsure, call the nearest veterinary hospital while preparing to leave and say, “I’m worried about the way they are breathing.”

When to contact your regular veterinarian

For a brief episode after intense play or an identifiable stressful event that stops promptly, let your cat settle and monitor for recurrence. Contact a veterinarian promptly if the panting continues, returns, happens without an obvious trigger, or your cat seems unwell. Do not use observation in place of emergency care when breathing looks difficult or other warning signs are present.

How to count a cat’s resting breathing rate

Counting can help monitor a calm cat, but it is not a substitute for emergency care. Do not delay care to count if your cat is panting or working to breathe.

  1. Wait until your cat is calm or asleep. Do not count while it is purring, playing, frightened, overheated, or immediately after activity.
  2. Watch the chest. One complete rise and fall equals one breath.
  3. Count for 30 seconds and multiply by two, or count for a full minute.
  4. Write down the result and the conditions under which you measured it.

The American Animal Hospital Association gives 15–30 breaths per minute as a typical resting range and says a continuously sustained rate over 40–60 breaths per minute is concerning. These figures do not override visible breathing effort, open-mouth panting, or other emergency signs.

What to do while going to the veterinarian

  1. Call ahead. Tell the clinic your cat is panting or having difficulty breathing, describe any other signs, and ask where to go.
  2. Keep things quiet and comfortable. Minimize noise, movement, and handling. If heatstroke is possible, begin the cooling steps above while traveling, without delaying care.
  3. Use a secure carrier. If possible, remove its top and lower the cat in gently rather than pushing a distressed cat through a small opening.
  4. Let your cat choose its position. Do not force it onto its side or into a particular posture.

Do not give human medication, force food or water, use essential oils, or administer an inhaler or oxygen without veterinary direction. Avoid repeatedly manipulating the mouth or delaying care to record a video. Unnecessary restraint can increase stress and breathing effort.

If your cat is unconscious and not breathing, call the emergency clinic or emergency dispatcher and follow professional instructions. That situation requires different emergency first aid from care for a conscious panting cat.

What the veterinarian may do

The veterinary team will prioritize breathing and stabilization. Depending on your cat’s condition, the initial assessment may include observing breathing rate and effort, posture, gum color, and alertness; oxygen support; blood tests; chest imaging; or other tests to investigate the cause. Treatment depends on the underlying problem, so a veterinarian may need to stabilize the cat before confirming a diagnosis.

Bottom line

Cats do not typically pant like dogs. A brief episode after intense activity or an identifiable stressful event may stop as the cat settles, but ongoing, unexplained, recurrent, or visibly difficult breathing needs prompt veterinary attention. For sustained breathing trouble, abnormal gums, collapse, or heatstroke signs, go to an emergency veterinarian now.

FAQ

Do cats ever pant normally?

How long can I wait if my cat is panting?

Do not wait if your cat has sustained or difficult breathing, abnormal gums, collapse, or other distress signs; go to an emergency veterinary hospital. A brief episode after a clear trigger that stops promptly may be observed as the cat settles, but contact a veterinarian if it continues, returns, or your cat seems unwell.

Can heat make a cat pant?

Yes. Panting after heat exposure can signal overheating or heatstroke. Move your cat to a cooler area, use room-temperature or cool tap water with wet towels and moving air during transport, and seek veterinary care immediately. Do not use ice water or delay transport for cooling.

Is my cat panting because of a hairball?

Coughing or hacking can be mistaken for a hairball, but repeated coughing, wheezing, open-mouth breathing, or poor recovery may indicate an airway or respiratory problem. Treat apparent breathing difficulty as urgent.
