The Balinese is a longhaired variety of the Siamese developed in the United States. It is generally an affectionate, intelligent, active, and vocal companion whose silky single coat is relatively easy to groom. It may suit a household that can provide company, daily interactive play, and safe climbing space, but may be a poor fit for people seeking a quiet, hands-off cat.

The name refers to the breed’s graceful appearance, not an origin in Bali. As with any breed, temperament and care needs vary among individual cats.

Balinese cat overview

Characteristic What to expect
Breed type Longhaired variety of the Siamese

Voice Communicative and talkative; individual cats vary
Activity and social needs Active and people-oriented; benefits from daily play, company, and enrichment

Lifespan estimates TICA says 10+ years; GCCF and PetMD give estimates of 18–22 years. These are source estimates, not guarantees for an individual cat.

What is a Balinese cat?

The Balinese is the longhaired variety of the Siamese. The breed was developed in the United States from longhaired kittens that appeared in Siamese litters. The name was inspired by the graceful dancers of Bali. Registry histories describe the breed’s development differently, so a single precise founding date is not settled.

Accepted colors and the way registries divide Balinese and related color varieties can differ. If registration or show standards matter to you, check the standard of the registry you are considering.

Appearance and physical characteristics

A Balinese has the refined, tapered outline associated with the Siamese rather than a broad or heavily built body. The standard type is long-lined and fine-boned but muscular, with a wedge-shaped head, large ears, and blue eyes. The coat lies close to the body and feels soft and silky, with a plumed tail. Its single coat has no downy undercoat.

Balinese temperament and behavior

Breed associations describe Balinese cats as affectionate, curious, playful, intelligent, and socially engaged. Many seek company and interaction, but those are breed tendencies, not guarantees about an individual cat. Consider the cat’s own personality and your household’s routine.

Balinese cats are communicative and may vocalize to get attention. A voice that may be softer than some Siamese cats’ is not the same as a silent or consistently quiet cat. If you prefer a cat that rarely vocalizes, meet an individual adult before deciding.

Intelligence and training

Many Balinese cats respond well to reward-based training and engaging activities. TICA notes that they can learn fetch and leash walking. Introduce new activities gradually and safely; never force a cat to participate.

  • Fetch and toy-retrieval games
  • Clicker training and basic cues
  • Gradual, safe leash training
  • Food puzzles and interactive games

Provide appropriate outlets for play and curiosity. A bored cat may seek its own entertainment, so regular activity and environmental choice can help.

Exercise, enrichment, and the home environment

A Balinese can live in an apartment or a larger home if it has safe ways to climb, scratch, play, rest, and interact. The important consideration is not simply floor area, but whether the household can provide attention and enrichment.

A practical Balinese enrichment setup

  • Vertical space: Provide a stable cat tree or secure climbing shelves and inspect them for stability.
  • Scratching choices: Offer sturdy vertical and horizontal scratchers in places the cat uses.
  • Interactive play: Make time for daily play with a wand toy, fetch toy, or other activity involving a person. Put wand toys away when unsupervised.
  • Food puzzles: Offer puzzle feeders suited to the cat and include their calories in the daily feeding plan.
  • Safe observation: Provide a window perch only where windows are securely screened and access does not create a fall risk.
  • Human contact: Build regular play, training, grooming, and social time into the day.

Grooming and shedding

Despite its long hair, the Balinese coat is relatively manageable. Its single coat is less prone to matting than many dense longhaired coats. TICA recommends weekly brushing, while CFA says combing or brushing several times a month; the right routine depends on the individual cat and coat.

A wide-toothed cat comb or soft brush can help remove loose hair and let you check the skin. Introduce grooming gradually and stop if the cat becomes distressed. Routine bathing is normally unnecessary. Ask a veterinarian about persistent itching, hair loss, redness, odor, or a sudden change in grooming behavior.

Balinese cats should not be described as hypoallergenic. They produce allergens, and people’s reactions vary.

Feeding and nutrition

Choose a commercial cat food with a nutritional adequacy statement indicating that it is complete and balanced for the cat’s life stage. Feeding directions on a package are a starting point, not an individualized prescription. Adjust portions for the cat’s age, activity, body condition, health, and veterinary advice.

Measure meals when needed and monitor body condition. Treats should make up only a limited share of daily calories. Discuss supplements, homemade diets, or therapeutic foods with a veterinarian.

Balinese cat health considerations

Breed associations generally describe the Balinese as healthy, but no breed description guarantees an individual cat’s health. Siamese-family ancestry makes it useful to discuss inherited conditions and screening with a responsible breeder and veterinarian.

Progressive retinal atrophy

Progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) is a genetic condition that can cause progressive vision loss. Ask a breeder what screening was performed on the parents, request documentation, and ask what the results mean for the kitten. Genetic testing is one part of responsible breeding, not a guarantee that a cat will never become ill.

Amyloidosis and anesthesia sensitivity

Sources differ on whether Balinese cats share the amyloidosis risk described in some Siamese and Oriental lines. Treat it as a potential concern with uncertain breed-specific prevalence, not an inevitable or established common outcome. Ask the breeder about family health history and discuss individual concerns with a veterinarian.

TICA also notes possible anesthesia sensitivity in Balinese cats. Tell your veterinarian the cat’s breed and family health history and ask whether any individual considerations apply before a procedure. Do not assume that breed alone determines an individual cat’s risk.

Dental care

Ask a veterinarian about dental examinations and home care. If brushing is appropriate, use a cat toothbrush and cat-safe toothpaste, introduced gradually; never use human toothpaste. Home care does not replace veterinary assessment when dental disease is present.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Routine care checklist

  1. Arrange a veterinary examination after adoption or purchase and establish ongoing care.
  2. Follow a vaccination and parasite-prevention plan recommended for the cat’s lifestyle and location.
  3. Ask about dental examinations and suitable home oral care.
  4. Review food portions using body condition and veterinary advice.
  5. Monitor appetite, activity, vision, coat, grooming, and litter-box habits.
  6. Ask breeders for parent health screening records and relevant genetic-test results.

Are Balinese cats good with children and dogs?

They can be, but compatibility is not guaranteed by breed. The cat’s individual temperament, socialization, the other animal’s behavior, and the household’s ability to supervise all matter. Some breed guidance suggests that older children may be a better match for the breed’s activity level than very young children.

Introduce animals gradually, provide the cat with escape routes and a protected area, and teach children to handle the cat respectfully. Do not leave a cat with a young child or unfamiliar dog without appropriate supervision.

Who should get a Balinese cat?

A Balinese may be a good fit if you want an interactive companion and can provide regular company, daily play, and safe climbing and scratching opportunities. You should also be comfortable with a cat that may be vocal and actively seek attention.

Consider another breed or an individual adult with a different temperament if you want a quiet, highly independent cat or are away for long periods. The coat may be relatively easy to care for, but the cat’s social and enrichment needs require time.

Finding a Balinese responsibly

Balinese cats may take time to find. CFA notes that prospective owners may need to travel or wait for a litter, contact related-breed networks, or consider an adult. CFA and TICA breeder-finding resources can be a starting point, but a registry listing or membership alone does not guarantee responsible breeding.

Ask a breeder:

  • Which registry and breed standard are followed?
  • What health screening and genetic tests were performed on the parents, and can you see the documentation?
  • How are kittens raised and socialized?
  • Can you see veterinary records and, where appropriate, meet the mother and see the living environment?
  • What does the written contract cover?
  • What is the return policy, and will the breeder help if you can no longer keep the cat?

Be cautious if a seller will not provide records, pressures you to send money quickly, or cannot explain its return policy. Consider transparency, living conditions, socialization, and documentation together.
