Persistent or changing discharge, redness, squinting, rubbing, pain, or cloudiness needs veterinary assessment; color alone cannot identify the cause or the right treatment.
Yellow or green discharge can occur with infection, but also with dry eye and other problems. Do not use human or leftover eye medication unless a veterinarian directs you to.
Is dog eye discharge normal?
A small amount of clear or slightly reddish-brown dried crust may collect at the inner corner of the eye. If the amount is stable and the eye is not red or uncomfortable, gently clean the surrounding fur and watch for changes.
Persistent wetness or recurrent crusting may be epiphora, or tear overflow. It can result from excess tear production or impaired drainage. Facial anatomy, hair, debris, inflammation, foreign material, or a narrowed or blocked tear duct may contribute.

Discharge in one or both eyes does not establish a diagnosis. One-sided symptoms can occur with a local irritant, injury, or drainage problem; conditions such as conjunctivitis can affect one or both eyes.
What the color and texture may suggest
Appearance offers clues, not a diagnosis. Do not select an antibiotic, steroid, or other eye medication based on discharge color.
| Appearance | Possible explanations | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| A little clear or reddish-brown morning crust | Dried tears, oil, mucus, cells, or dust; tear pigment can stain fur. | If stable and the eye is comfortable, clean the surrounding fur and watch for changes. A new increase or discomfort warrants veterinary advice. |
| Clear, watery tearing | Irritation, allergies, foreign material, abnormal eyelid or eye anatomy, impaired tear drainage, corneal injury, or glaucoma. | A mild episode in a comfortable dog may be watched briefly. Persistent watering, redness, or pain should be checked. |
| White-gray mucus or thick yellow-green discharge | Dry eye (KCS), conjunctivitis, infection, or another underlying eye problem. | Arrange veterinary assessment. Appearance alone cannot tell whether medication is needed or which medication is safe. |
| Discharge with squinting, rubbing, pain, redness, or cloudiness | A corneal ulcer or another painful eye condition is possible. | Seek prompt veterinary attention. A veterinarian may stain the cornea to check for damage. |
Common causes of dog eye discharge
Conjunctivitis
Conjunctivitis is inflammation of the tissue covering the white part of the eye and lining the eyelids. It can cause discharge, redness, swelling, blinking, or squinting. Causes vary and include infection, allergies, immune-mediated disease, dry eye, eyelid or eyelash disorders, blocked tear ducts, trauma, foreign bodies, and corneal ulcers. Treatment depends on the cause.
Dry eye
Keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS), or dry eye, occurs when tear production or tear-film function is inadequate. It may cause a red, irritated eye and thick, sticky white or yellow-green mucus. A veterinarian can test tear production. Treatment may include prescribed tear substitutes and medication to stimulate tear production; ongoing monitoring may be needed.

A scratch or ulcer on the clear front surface of the eye can be painful and may cause squinting, rubbing, redness, cloudiness, tearing, or discharge. Trauma, foreign material, abnormal eyelashes, eyelid problems, dry eye, and infection can contribute. A veterinarian may use fluorescein stain to check for damage; care depends on the injury.

Eyelid, eyelash, facial-structure, or tear-drainage problems
Eyelids that turn inward or outward, abnormal hairs that touch the eye, facial hair, and some facial structures can irritate the eye or affect tear flow. Tears may also overflow when the drainage pathway is impaired by anatomy, debris, inflammation, narrowing, or obstruction. Recurring tearing or crusting merits an examination to look for an underlying structural cause.
Other causes
Allergies, respiratory illness, foreign material, and glaucoma are among other possible causes. Glaucoma can cause watery tearing, redness, squinting, cloudiness, or an enlarged eye. A cloudy, painful, suddenly changed, or injured eye needs prompt veterinary attention.
When should a dog with eye discharge see a veterinarian?
Contact a veterinarian for yellow or green discharge, persistent or increasing tearing, redness, pain, squinting, rubbing, or a cloudy-looking eye. A painful, cloudy, injured eye or one held shut deserves prompt attention because corneal damage can worsen. Seek emergency care for severe injury or an eye outside its socket. If you are unsure how urgently your dog needs care, call a veterinary practice for triage advice.

The veterinarian may ask when the discharge began, whether one or both eyes are affected, whether there was trauma or exposure to foreign material, and whether your dog has had previous episodes or other signs of illness. Depending on the examination, tests may include:

- Fluorescein staining to look for a corneal scratch or ulcer.
- Tear-production testing to assess for dry eye.
- Eye-pressure measurement when glaucoma or another internal-eye problem is suspected.
- Assessment of tear drainage when obstruction or abnormal flow is suspected.
These tests help determine the cause and which treatment is appropriate. Medication from a previous episode may be ineffective or harmful for a different problem.
How is dog eye discharge treated?
Treatment depends on the cause, not the color of the discharge. Dry eye may require tear substitutes and tear-stimulating medication, sometimes with additional treatment for secondary problems. Conjunctivitis treatment depends on its cause. Corneal injury, drainage problems, and glaucoma each require their own veterinary care plan; some conditions need ongoing monitoring or a procedure.
Do not treat suspected infection with human or previously prescribed eye medication unless your veterinarian directs you to. The wrong medicine may not address the cause and can worsen the condition.

For ordinary crust on the fur, gently clean around the eye with a warm damp cloth or a dog eye-cleaning wipe used according to its directions. Keep products out of the eye, and stop if your dog seems painful or resists. Cleaning the fur does not treat the underlying cause.

Does green discharge mean my dog has an infection?
No. Yellow or green discharge can occur with infection, dry eye, conjunctivitis, or another eye problem. Color alone cannot show which condition is present or whether an antibiotic is appropriate.
Can I use human eye drops for my dog?
Do not use human or previously prescribed eye medication unless a veterinarian specifically directs you to use it. The right treatment depends on the cause.
Is tear staining a sign of eye disease?
Reddish-brown staining can result from tears and is not automatically evidence of infection. Recurring staining or staining with redness, pain, or discharge warrants veterinary advice.

How much eye discharge is normal for a dog?
A small, stable amount of dried residue may be normal if the eye is clear and comfortable. Persistent wetness, repeated crusting, or a change in the eye or your dog’s comfort should not be dismissed as normal sleep crust.
What tests might a veterinarian perform?
Depending on the examination, a veterinarian may stain the cornea with fluorescein, test tear production, measure eye pressure, or assess tear drainage.
Bottom line
A little stable crust in a comfortable, clear eye may be minor, but persistent or changing discharge deserves attention. Color cannot diagnose infection or determine treatment. Contact a veterinarian about redness, pain, squinting, rubbing, cloudiness, or discharge that persists or worsens.
