Its wildlife, granite scenery, lakes, and recreation make it a rewarding destination in its own right; plan around the wildlife-focused loop, the vehicle constraints on Needles Highway, and current road conditions.
The “national-park-scale” description refers to scenery and experiences, not an official designation: Custer is managed by South Dakota Game, Fish, and Parks. Visitors can combine scenic drives with hiking, camping, biking, swimming, fishing, and wildlife viewing.
Why Custer State Park feels bigger than its state-park label
The park brings together granite formations, rolling prairie, lakes, wildlife, and scenic drives across a large area of the Black Hills. Its roads and activity options make it possible to plan a visit around either wildlife viewing, dramatic scenery, or time outdoors beyond the car.
Start with Wildlife Loop Road
Wildlife Loop Road is an 18-mile route through grassland and rolling-hill habitat. Visitors may encounter bison, pronghorn, elk, coyotes, and other wildlife, but sightings are not guaranteed. Allow time to travel at a safe pace and give animals room to move.

How to watch wildlife safely
Wild animals remain wild even when they are near roads. South Dakota Game, Fish, and Parks says visitors must not feed or disturb wildlife and should remain in their vehicle or at least 100 yards from bison, elk, and other animals.
- Stay in your vehicle when animals are close to the road, or remain at least 100 yards away.
- Do not feed, approach, touch, or disturb wildlife.
- Give animals room to move and do not block their path.
Compact binoculars can help with wildlife viewing while respecting the required distance. They are an optional aid, not a park recommendation.
Take the Needles Highway for granite scenery
Needles Highway is a 14-mile scenic drive known for granite formations, hairpin turns, and narrow tunnels. Large RVs and vehicles towing campers may not be able to navigate the route and should avoid it. Check vehicle suitability before choosing this drive.
If you are visiting the Sylvan Lake area, note that Sylvan Lake Campground sites are close together and are not suitable for large tents or RVs over 27 feet. South Dakota Game, Fish, and Parks recommends that large RVs or vehicles towing campers approach via SD Highway 89 from Custer rather than Needles Highway.
