146 Flower Names For Cats can give you a name for almost any personality, from familiar Rose, Daisy, and Lily to unusual Nerine, Scabiosa, and Zephyranthes. Choose by sound, nickname potential, coat color, and temperament—but remember that a flower name is not a recommendation that the real plant is safe for cats.

The list is divided by the kind of name you want: recognizable flowers, soft and feminine-leaning choices, elegant names, short names, color-inspired ideas, unusual botanical names, and playful options. Some entries are creative combinations rather than formal botanical common names.

Key takeaways

  • This guide contains exactly 146 flower-inspired cat names, from familiar choices such as Rose and Daisy to unusual botanical ideas such as Nerine and Zephyranthes.
  • Short names including Rose, Iris, Lily, Poppy, and Clover are easy to call, while longer names such as Nasturtium and Honeysuckle offer built-in nickname potential.
  • Coat color, personality, uniqueness, household clarity, and the name’s sound are useful ways to narrow the list.
  • A cat can be renamed after adoption, and consistent use helps the cat associate the new sound with what follows, according to Cats Protection’s 2025 guidance.
  • A flower name is not a plant-safety label: true lilies and daylilies are especially dangerous to cats, and suspected exposure needs prompt veterinary or poison-control advice.

How should you choose a flower name for your cat?

Choose a name that is pleasant to repeat, suits your cat’s appearance or personality, and is clearly different from household commands or another pet’s name. Rose, Iris, Lily, Poppy, and Clover are simple everyday choices; Nasturtium, Scabiosa, and Zephyranthes are more distinctive but may shorten naturally into nicknames.

Are flower names safe for cats?

A flower-inspired cat name does not mean the real flower is safe for cats. The names below are creative naming suggestions, not a list of cat-safe plants. Check the exact plant in the ASPCA cat-specific toxic and non-toxic plant database before bringing flowers, bouquets, bulbs, or plant material into a cat household.

True lilies in the Lilium genus are the most important warning. Pet Poison Helpline states, “All parts of lilies from the Lilium genus are toxic for cats.” The leaf, stem, flower, pollen, vase water, and rhizome can be involved, with acute kidney-failure risk. Daylilies in the Hemerocallis genus are also highly toxic.

Common names can be misleading. Calla lilies and peace lilies contain irritating calcium oxalate crystals, while Peruvian lilies, also called Alstroemeria, are described by Pet Poison Helpline as non-toxic. Exact identification matters; do not assume that every plant containing “lily” in its common name has the same risk. The Pet Poison Helpline lily guidance explains the most serious exposure risks, and its comparison of different plants called lilies explains why names alone are unreliable.

ASPCA gardening guidance also flags several ornamental plants and bulbs, including tulips, hyacinths, irises, daffodils, and crocus. ASPCA advises, “Always supervise your pets in areas where there may be toxic plants or plant products.” If a cat may have chewed a plant or contacted lily pollen, contact a veterinarian or an animal poison-control service promptly rather than waiting for symptoms.

What should you check before settling on a cat name?

  • Say it repeatedly: A name that still sounds comfortable after many repetitions is more practical than one that only looks pretty on paper.
  • Test the nickname: Ranunculus might become “Rani,” Nasturtium might become “Nash,” and Honeysuckle might become “Honey.” Choose a shortened form you also like.
  • Compare it with commands: Avoid a name that sounds too much like a frequent household instruction or another pet’s name.
  • Match the visual impression: Use coat color, markings, eyes, or overall presence as inspiration rather than forcing a literal match.
  • Allow for a rename: An adopted cat can learn a new name. Cats Protection explains that cats can build an association between the sound of a name and what follows, so use the chosen name consistently.

What can you do after choosing a name?

A practical next step is adding the chosen name and contact information to a personalized cat ID tag. Floral and flower-shaped engraved tags are available as a product category, but check the individual listing for cat-specific sizing, attachment method, engraving space, and other features rather than assuming every tag has the same specifications.

A floral accessory can also be a style choice, such as a flower cat collar or breakaway floral cat collar. Do not assume that every floral collar is breakaway, correctly fitted, reflective, durable, or suitable for your cat; verify those details on the individual product before buying.
