Yes, the viral “AI pet door rejects dead mice” story is real. The product is Flappie, a smart cat flap that uses an outdoor camera and an onboard AI processor to detect whether a cat is carrying prey. If it sees a mouse, bird, snake, fish, lizard, rat, insect, or another object it interprets as prey, it keeps the flap locked until the cat returns without it.
That does not mean Flappie removes the animal or detects every dead mouse after it has been dropped. It tries to stop the cat at the entrance—and its own published accuracy figures are inconsistent.
How Flappie stops a cat carrying prey
Flappie’s core feature is prey detection, not simply cat recognition. The company says the idea came from a cat that repeatedly brought mice indoors.
- The cat approaches the entrance from outside.
- An external camera captures a frontal view.
- An onboard AI processor analyzes whether the cat is carrying an object.
- If prey is detected, the flap remains locked.
- If the unit is connected to Wi-Fi, the owner can receive a notification and view a saved video clip.
- When the cat returns without the object, the flap can unlock.
The access decision runs locally on the device, so Wi-Fi is not required for prey detection itself. Wi-Fi is used for connected features such as notifications, video access, and software updates. That is an important distinction: “works without Wi-Fi” does not mean that no data can leave the device when connected services are enabled.

Does it really reject dead mice?
In the manufacturer’s intended scenario, yes: a cat carrying a mouse should be prevented from entering until it drops the mouse and approaches again empty-mouthed. The flap does not make the cat release its catch, and it cannot retrieve prey that has already been left inside or beside the entrance.
A cat could also drop a mouse before the camera makes its decision, leave prey in a tunnel, or approach in a way that hides the object. Those are practical limitations of inspecting a moving animal rather than a guarantee that every piece of prey will be stopped.
What can it detect?
Flappie’s support documentation lists mice, rats, birds, fish, snakes, and insects. Its product page also mentions lizards and other prey. These are manufacturer-listed detection targets, not a promise that every species, size, posture, or condition will be recognized.
The system needs a useful view of the object. A very small animal, prey carried low or sideways, or an object hidden behind the cat may be harder to identify. Toys, leaves, bedding, or other harmless objects may also be mistaken for prey.
How accurate is Flappie?
This is where viral coverage often becomes too confident. Flappie’s official pages do not give one consistent accuracy figure:
- The product page claims over 98% prey-detection accuracy.
- The support FAQ says detection is approximately 94% accurate.
Those are manufacturer claims, and the reviewed materials do not provide an independent benchmark explaining the difference. The safest conclusion is that Flappie is designed to reduce prey deliveries, not eliminate them.
There are two possible error types:
- False negative: the cat is carrying prey, but the flap opens.
- False positive: the cat is carrying no problematic prey, but the flap stays locked.
A false lockout may happen when a cat carries a toy, leaf, or another harmless object. Some cats may also become frustrated if they repeatedly approach with prey and are refused entry.

Night use and camera conditions
Flappie says its outdoor camera has infrared illumination and can operate in darkness. Night capability still depends on the camera seeing the cat and the carried object clearly. A straight approach, clean lens, and unobstructed camera view matter.
Recommended Free Tools
Keep cobwebs, raindrops, dirt, decorations, curtains, and other objects away from the camera area. The company specifically advises maintaining a clear approach path and reporting incorrect detections from saved clips when the unit is connected.
Setup: the 14-day learning period
Prey detection is automatically disabled for the first 14 days, according to Flappie’s support documentation. This gives the cat time to adjust and allows the system to learn the environment. Detection activates automatically afterward.
False detections may be more likely during the learning period. Owners should therefore treat the first two weeks as acclimation rather than evidence that the finished system will behave perfectly.
Installation and cat-size requirements
Flappie is a wired cat flap, not a battery-powered device. A 12V power supply is included. If a suitable opening already exists, the company describes installation as requiring only a screwdriver, but cutting a new opening in a door, wall, or pane of glass is a more involved job.
The published measurements need careful checking because Flappie’s product and support pages are not perfectly consistent:
| Specification | Published figure |
|---|---|
| Frame | 220 × 252 mm |
| Passage opening | 150 × 122 mm |
| FAQ minimum door or wall cutout | At least 165 × 171 mm |
| Product-page minimum wall dimensions | 167 × 173 mm |
| Glass installation | Approximately 212–260 mm hole diameter |
| Maximum wall thickness with extensions | 200 mm |
Use the latest installation manual and measure your actual opening before ordering. Do not assume an existing cat-flap cutout will match.

The passage is 150 × 122 mm. Most cats should fit, but owners of unusually large cats—particularly Maine Coons—should measure the cat across the shoulders while standing and compare that measurement with the current specifications.
Privacy and app features
The local AI decision and connected camera services are separate functions. When Wi-Fi is enabled, Flappie can provide notifications, save video clips, and support app access. The company says users can opt out of AI-training use through the app and request deletion from training datasets. Sharing to its community feed is described as optional.
Even with on-device detection, a connected outdoor camera raises ordinary privacy questions: what area is visible, whether passers-by may be recorded, how the account is secured, and how connected footage or event data is retained. Review the company’s camera and data policy before connecting the unit.
Price, availability, warranty, and support
On the official product page observed on August 18, 2026, Flappie was listed at a sale price of CHF 449, reduced from CHF 479, and marked in stock. The page provided delivery information for Switzerland, Germany, and the wider EU.
That does not establish current U.S. shipping, U.S. pricing, electrical compatibility documentation, or a U.S. warranty route. Buyers outside the listed delivery regions should confirm those details directly before paying.
The same official materials list:
- Two-year hardware warranty.
- 30-day satisfaction guarantee.
- Five years of free software updates.
- A free basic app, with premium features also mentioned but not priced in the reviewed material.
Flappie also describes a Cat ID biometric-recognition feature as planned for 2026. Treat that as in development unless the current product page confirms that it has launched; it should not be confused with the existing prey-detection feature.

Flappie is a strong fit when the household’s specific problem is an outdoor cat carrying prey through a cat flap and the owner wants an automatic solution. It makes the most sense when:
Rank #4
- Compatible with all common microchips - works with your cat's existing microchip to keep out intruder cats and wildlife
- Set exit permissions for each pet to keep specific pets indoors using dualscan technology - Store up to 32 pets
- Can be installed in doors, windows or walls - accessories available
- Door opening is 4 3/4" H x 5 5/8" W
- Requires 4 AA batteries which last up to a year with normal use (not included)
- The cat has a clear, relatively straight approach to the entrance.
- The cat fits the passage dimensions.
- A nearby power connection is practical.
- The owner accepts occasional false positives and false negatives.
- The buyer is in a region with confirmed shipping, support, and returns.
- The owner is comfortable with a camera and optional connected services.
Pause before buying if the cat approaches from an obstructed angle, carries objects close to the ground, is unusually large, or shares the opening with dogs or larger pets. It is also a poor choice for anyone who requires independently verified accuracy or a battery-powered door.
Alternatives to an AI prey-detecting flap
Manual cat flap
A conventional flap is inexpensive and simple, but it cannot distinguish an empty-mouthed cat from one carrying a mouse. The owner must intervene.
Timer-controlled flap
A timer can keep a cat indoors during nighttime or peak hunting hours. It does not inspect what the cat is carrying and may leave the cat outside when the schedule closes.
Microchip or RFID cat flap
Microchip and RFID models are better suited to keeping neighboring cats or wildlife out. They identify an authorized cat; they do not inherently detect prey in its mouth. Vendor starting points include Sure Petcare and PetSafe. Check current models, prices, subscriptions, and regional availability before comparing them with Flappie.
Supervised outdoor time or a catio
Supervision, an enclosed outdoor run, or keeping the cat indoors during high-risk periods addresses hunting before the cat reaches the door. Indoor enrichment and wildlife-warning accessories may also help, although no single measure guarantees that hunting will stop.
Bottom line
Flappie is a real, specialized AI cat flap that attempts to stop cats from carrying prey indoors by locking the entrance while a camera and local processor detect an object. It is more targeted than a timer or microchip flap, but it is not a perfect wildlife barrier. The conflicting 94% and over-98% manufacturer claims, camera-angle requirements, installation constraints, power dependency, and region-specific availability should all factor into the purchase decision.
