Ibu Baron, nicknamed “The Baroness,” is a female reticulated python measured at 7.22 metres (23 feet 8 inches) in the Maros region of Sulawesi, Indonesia. Guinness World Records verified her in January 2026 as the longest verifiably measured wild snake. She may still grow, but that is a biological possibility—not a change established by a later measurement.
How long is Ibu Baron?
Guinness World Records records Ibu Baron at 7.22 metres (23 feet 8 inches). Wildlife rescuer and licensed snake handler Diaz Nugraha measured her with natural-history photographer Radu Frentiu on 18 January 2026. She had been discovered in the Maros region of Sulawesi in late 2025.
National Geographic reports that the team used a surveyor’s tape along the snake’s natural curves. It also reports a weight of 96.5 kilograms (213 pounds) while she had not recently eaten. Length and weight describe different things: the length is Guinness’s verified record measurement, while the weight is the figure reported by National Geographic.
Is she the longest snake ever found?
She holds the Guinness title for the longest verifiably measured wild snake, not the longest snake in any setting. Guinness lists Medusa, a captive reticulated python, at 7.67 metres (25 feet 2 inches), measured on 12 October 2011. Ibu Baron’s record is notable because it is for a wild snake, and the category matters when comparing the two.

Claims about exceptional snake lengths can be difficult to assess when there is no reliable measurement. Guinness’s wording is deliberately specific: “verifiably measured” and “wild.”
What kind of snake is the Baroness?
Ibu Baron is a reticulated python (Malayopython reticulatus). Singapore’s National Parks Board describes this species as the world’s longest snake species, with large individuals reaching 5–7 metres. Reticulated pythons are nonvenomous constrictors: they ambush prey and use their bodies to subdue it. Large forest pythons may take prey such as wild boar or deer.

The species occurs across South and Southeast Asia and the Indo-Australian Archipelago. Reticulated pythons are generally nocturnal, strong swimmers and egg-layers. Their biology and habitat help explain why one snake’s record should not be treated as a typical size for the species.
Is Ibu Baron still growing?
She may continue to gain length, particularly if she is not fully mature, but no later measurement confirms that she has grown beyond 7.22 metres. The phrase “still growing” should not be taken as proof that her record length has increased.

Why further growth is plausible
Reticulated pythons grow quickly during their early years, then growth slows with age. Toronto Zoo says growth is fairly rapid in the first few years and offers a rule of thumb that a three-metre reticulated python is generally three to four years old. A 2025 technical chapter from the Department of Wildlife and National Parks Peninsular Malaysia reports that some captive individuals exceeded 300 centimetres in snout-to-vent length in 365 days; it also notes that growth in the wild is slower. These are general observations, not a growth estimate for Ibu Baron herself.
Why Guinness mentions a longer relaxed measurement
Guinness says anesthesia can relax a snake’s muscles and estimates that a relaxed measurement could be at least 10% longer. Ibu Baron was not measured under anesthesia: Guinness says it was not tested because anesthesia carries risk and was unnecessary to establish the record. That estimate is not evidence that she has already grown or that her verified record length should be revised.

What happened to her after the measurement?
National Geographic reports that local conservationist Budi Purwanto took custody of Ibu Baron so she would not be sold or killed. He maintains a makeshift shelter where she lives alongside other rescued snakes. Photographer Radu Frentiu described the experience by saying, “There are still wonders out there.”
Reticulated pythons are powerful wild animals, not suitable pets for ordinary households. Ibu Baron’s story is tied to rescue and conservation; the available account describes her shelter but does not establish an official donation or sponsorship channel.
