What is the 52-hertz whale?
It is the name given to a distinctive whale-like acoustic signal detected by biologists in the North Pacific. Researchers tracked a source producing calls with a prominent 50–52 hertz emphasis. The records are unusual, but they are acoustic observations, not a visual identification of an animal.
Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) says the sound was first detected in 1989 and recorded again in 1990 and 1991. After part of the U.S. Navy’s SOSUS hydrophone network was declassified, researchers used recordings from that network to follow the source across the North Pacific, from offshore California toward the Aleutian Islands. WHOI’s historical account describes the tracking.
What does the call sound like?
NOAA’s Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory describes the recordings as 52 Hz “whale-like” signals from the Northeast Pacific. NOAA reports an average center frequency of 51.75 Hz, with tones lasting 5–7 seconds and appearing in groups of 2–6. NOAA PMEL’s signal page includes sample audio. The playback is sped up ten times, so it does not represent the call’s natural pitch or timing.

The peer-reviewed paper “Twelve years of tracking 52-Hz whale calls from a unique source in the North Pacific” describes a distinctive call with a 50–52 Hz emphasis tracked from a single source over 12 years. The abstract is available through Deep-Sea Research Part I.
How far did researchers track it?
In WHOI’s 2005 account of the researchers’ historical tracking, calls were picked up each year from August to December. The source was followed until it left sensor range in January or early February. Estimated travel was 31–69 kilometers per day; the distance tracked in a season ranged from 708 kilometers to 11,062 kilometers, with the longer distance recorded in 2002–03. These are historical estimates, not a current migration update.

Do scientists know what species made the calls?
No species identification is established in the cited record. Acoustic localization can track where a sound came from, but it does not show the animal’s appearance or identify its sex, species, age, or present-day status. Researchers interpreted the seasonal records as following one individual because they found one source each season and no overlapping calls with the same characteristics. That interpretation is not visual confirmation that every recording came from the same whale.

- A blue whale or fin whale: These are among the possibilities listed by the 52 Hz Whale project, but the recordings do not confirm either species.
- A hybrid whale: Hybridization has been suggested as one possible explanation; there is no confirmed identification.
- An anatomical difference or malformation: WHOI relays these as possibilities, not established causes.
The alternatives would require evidence that identifies the animal or links a particular physical trait to its call. The acoustic record alone does not do that. The 52 Hz Whale project’s science explainer also emphasizes that the proposed explanations remain uncertain.

There is no evidence in the recordings that establishes loneliness. Sound recordings cannot reveal an animal’s emotional state, and an unusual frequency does not prove that no other whale can hear or respond to it. Whether a call is audible, recognized, or answered are separate questions. The monitored hydrophones also covered only particular areas, so a lack of recorded responses cannot establish that no whale responded beyond sensor coverage.

The phrase “the loneliest whale” turns a puzzling acoustic record into a human story. It may capture how listeners feel about the mystery, but it should not be presented as a scientific description of the whale.
Has anyone seen it, and is it still alive?
The cited sources do not provide a visual confirmation, and they do not establish whether the source remains alive today. WHOI’s tracking account is historical; the project explainer notes that publicly available historical tracking has not supplied current visual confirmation. Without such evidence, its present status is unknown.
What remains a mystery?
- The species and physical identity of the source.
- Whether every seasonal record came from the same individual.
- Whether other whales heard or responded outside the monitored coverage.
- Whether the source is still alive.
The recordings establish a distinctive signal and a substantial historical tracking record. They do not resolve those unanswered questions.
