Happy St. Paw-trick’s Day! Daily Paws’ 2022 photo gallery celebrates 16 dogs dressed for an Irish-themed holiday—and makes clear that any dog can join the fun, whether or not it is an Irish breed.
The captions show cheerful, low-stakes ideas you can adapt at home: green accessories, shamrocks, rainbow details, themed treats and plenty of personality.
What the 16-dog gallery features
The gallery, published March 17, 2022, is a collection of reader-friendly costume inspiration rather than a breed guide. Its dogs wear simple seasonal accessories and appear in playful holiday scenes.
Costumes and accessories
- Mia the Frenchie wears a rainbow necklace.
- Finn, a golden, poses in a leprechaun hat and beard.
- Angus the Scottie sports a four-leaf-clover bandana.
- Brady and Bella, described as Labs, wear green bows.
- Keiko, described as a pitbull, and Niko, an American Staffordshire terrier, wear shamrock socks.
These examples show how little is needed for a St. Patrick’s Day look. A comfortable green collar accent or a properly fitted St. Patrick’s Day dog bandana can create the theme without covering your dog in a full costume.

There is a metal D-ring to protect the leash from winding to keep your dog safe. At the same time you can also hang dog tags or logos on the collar. Combine with your own preferences for flexible use
- WONDERFUL COMBINATION: Maiiu dog leash handles adopt a soft cushion padding on the inside grip, which is very comfortable to hold, and it's also very comfortable to control your lively and furry baby, protecting your hands from being burned by the rope

Treats and holiday settings
- Juno the dachshund enjoys a leprechaun biscuit.
- Duke, identified as an Irish red setter, greets visitors at the Guinness Storehouse in Dublin.
- Other captions include dog treats and a dog-specific “brew.”
The captions describe what appears in each photo; they are not product tests or endorsements. Choose treats your veterinarian considers appropriate for your dog, and supervise any new accessory or snack.
Irish breeds behind the theme
A Daily Paws overview published February 16, 2021 describes nine native Irish breeds and their histories. It notes that Irish setters were developed as working dogs for hunting game, that Irish wolfhounds are very large, and that the Irish red and white setter was revived as a breed. Those are broad historical descriptions, not individualized guidance or a substitute for current breed standards.

The article quotes Mari Beth O’Neill, identified as AKC Vice President of Sport Services, explaining how parent clubs develop breed standards: “We do a myriad of things, which includes assisting new breeds in becoming recognized,” O’Neill says. “I also work with all of the parent clubs and their development of a breed standard—the standard of excellence of their breed.” Read the background at Daily Paws’ overview of native Irish dog breeds.
Keep St. Patrick’s Day dressing comfortable
- Use lightweight items that do not restrict breathing, movement, hearing or vision.
- Check that hats, bows, necklaces, socks and bandanas fit securely but are not tight.
- Introduce an accessory briefly and remove it if your dog shows stress, tries to chew it or cannot move normally.
- Supervise dogs around small decorations, costume parts and biscuits.
- Never force a costume; a green toy or a festive photo backdrop is enough.
Dog “brew” is not human beer
Alcohol is toxic to dogs. A Daily Paws article updated March 18, 2026 advises prompt veterinary care if a dog consumes alcoholic beer and quotes Renee Schmid, DVM, DABVT, DABT: “They should never be allowed to ‘sleep it off.’” If your dog drinks human beer or another alcoholic beverage, contact a veterinarian or emergency clinic immediately.

Simple ways to celebrate
- Pick one comfortable green accessory, such as a well-fitted bandana.
- Take a short photo session in natural light; let your dog opt out at any time.
- Offer a familiar, veterinarian-approved treat instead of introducing several new foods at once.
- Keep alcoholic drinks out of reach and label any alcohol-free dog beverage clearly.
- Share the holiday with any breed—or mixed-breed dog—because the Irish theme is playful, not a statement about ancestry.
