Arlo, a German shepherd K-9 with Washington’s Thurston County Sheriff’s Office, survived being shot twice while on duty in January 2021 and was named a recipient of the American Kennel Club’s 2021 Paw of Courage award. His story, as reported by Daily Paws, includes emergency veterinary care, surgery and rehabilitation—and an uncertain future in active service.
Who is Arlo?
Arlo was a German shepherd working with the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office. Deputy Tyler Turpin was his handler, and Daily Paws reported that Arlo earned his K-9 certification in 2019. The article, updated February 18, 2021, described him as three years old at the time; that is a contemporaneous age, not a current one.
What happened when Arlo was shot?
Daily Paws reported that Arlo was shot twice on January 13, 2021, during an encounter involving Turpin and a suspect. According to the article’s account of statements by authorities, the bullets shattered Arlo’s C6 vertebra, lodged near his spine and injured one of his legs.
The report said Arlo initially had a 60 percent chance of survival, citing KGW8. That was his reported prognosis at the time, as relayed by Daily Paws—not a general survival statistic. Orthopedic veterinary surgeon Jen Warnock, quoted by KGW8 and reproduced in the article, said: “It’s a miracle that Arlo’s still alive,”

The article also reported that more than $73,000 had been raised through a GoFundMe to help with medical bills at that time. It is a figure reported in 2021, not a current fundraiser total.
