Some populations, however, migrate to saltwater and return to freshwater to spawn. Steelhead are the best-known example: they are the ocean-going form of rainbow trout, not a separate species.
“Trout” is a common-name group rather than a single taxonomic unit. Trout species occur in several salmonid genera, including Oncorhynchus, Salmo, and Salvelinus. That is why a brook trout and a rainbow trout can differ substantially in ancestry, habitat, and life history while both are called trout.
Are trout freshwater or saltwater fish?
Freshwater is the usual trout pattern. Resident rainbow, brook, brown, cutthroat, and lake trout can complete their life cycles in inland water. They feed, grow, overwinter, and reproduce in streams or lakes without entering the sea.
Some trout populations are anadromous: they hatch in freshwater, migrate through an estuary to the ocean or a large saline-connected water body, grow there, and return to freshwater to reproduce. Steelhead are anadromous rainbow trout. In the Great Lakes, steelhead may migrate into the lakes rather than the ocean, while resident rainbow trout remain in rivers and inland lakes.

Whether an individual is resident or migratory depends on its species, population, genetics, and local conditions. Color alone cannot reliably distinguish a steelhead from a resident rainbow trout.
What family do trout belong to?
Trout belong to the family Salmonidae, the cold-water fish family that also includes salmon, chars, and several related groups. “Trout” is not a formal rank within that family. It is a set of common names applied to species in different genera.

Brook trout and lake trout illustrate why common names can mislead: both are called trout, but both belong to the char genus Salvelinus. Rainbow and cutthroat trout are in Oncorhynchus, while brown trout is in Salmo.
Major trout species and forms
| Common name | Scientific name and lineage | Typical life history | Usual habitat and spawning setting | Useful identification or context |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rainbow trout | Oncorhynchus mykiss; salmonid | Resident freshwater or anadromous | Cold rivers, streams, and lakes; many spawn in gravel tributaries or stream runs | Resident fish stay inland; the anadromous form is called steelhead |
| Steelhead | Oncorhynchus mykiss; anadromous rainbow trout | Freshwater birth, ocean or Great Lakes growth, return to freshwater to spawn | Spawning tributaries and rivers; juveniles migrate through estuaries or connected waters | Genetically the same species as resident rainbow trout, with a different migratory life history |
| Brook trout | Salvelinus fontinalis; char | Usually resident freshwater | Small, cold, spring-fed streams and ponds; some populations spawn in lakes over gravel | Despite its name, it is a char rather than a member of the genera that include rainbow trout |
| Brown trout | Salmo trutta; salmonid trout | Resident river or lake, with sea-run populations in some regions | Rivers, streams, and lakes; spawning commonly occurs in gravel beds | The species includes both migratory and nonmigratory populations |
| Cutthroat trout | Oncorhynchus trout | Resident freshwater or migratory, depending on population | Cold streams, rivers, and lakes; many use tributary gravel for spawning | Native and managed populations occur in the Yellowstone region and elsewhere |
| Lake trout | Salvelinus namaycush; char | Resident freshwater | Deep, cold lakes; spawning can occur on lake bottoms over cobble-sized substrate | A char commonly called trout, adapted to lake rather than stream habitats |
Ranges, stocking practices, invasive status, and conservation classifications differ by jurisdiction. Local wildlife agencies are the appropriate source for regulations or status in a particular lake or watershed.

How trout live and reproduce
Stream and river trout
Many stream trout spawn in gravel riffles or runs. Females deposit eggs in a nest, or redd, and the eggs remain buried among clean, oxygenated stones until they hatch. Young fish first rely on their yolk sacs, then shift from tiny planktonic prey to aquatic insects and other food as they grow.
Lake-associated rainbow trout
Rainbow trout may spawn in tributaries while spending their growth phase in a lake. Lake-dwelling fish can return to tributary streams after roughly one to four years of growth, according to U.S. Geological Survey reporting. This movement links lake and river habitats within one life cycle.

- Easy Catch Design – Trembly Sinking + Vibrating Swim. The Shadtale delivers two actions in one lure: steady retrieve triggers a tight vibrating swim with paddle tail kick; jigging hops create a unique trembling fall. This combination triggers strikes from curious and aggressive fish alike
- Unique Trembly Sinking – Trembles All the Way Down. After each jigging hop, the Shadtale doesn't just drop – it trembles. This high‑frequency vibration during the fall mimics a stunned or injured baitfish, drawing reaction bites even from pressured bass, trout, crappie, and walleye
- Vibrating Swim Action – Steady Retrieve, Solid Vibration. Reel it in at a constant speed, and the paddle tail produces a powerful, tight vibrating swim. The lifelike tadpole profile and tail kick send out water displacement and flash that predator fish can't resist – perfect for covering water
- BKK Premium Hooks – Ready to Fish. Equipped with sharp, corrosion‑resistant BKK hooks straight from the factory. No need to upgrade – these hooks penetrate deep and hold firm, giving you confidence on every hookset
- Multi‑Lure Pack – Multiple Colors, Better Value, Any Water Condition. Each pack contains multiple Shadtale lures in a variety of colors. Dark colors for murky/low‑light water, light colors for clear/bright conditions – you'll always have the right color for the moment. More lures, less cost per bait, and great for family fishing trips
Brook trout
Brook trout favor cold, well-oxygenated water, especially small spring-fed streams and ponds. They commonly spawn over gravel in streams, although lake spawning also occurs. Their young progress from planktonic food to insect prey as they develop.
Steelhead
Steelhead hatch in freshwater and spend their early life in rivers. They then migrate through estuaries to the ocean, or into the Great Lakes in some populations, before returning to freshwater to reproduce. Resident rainbow trout follow the same broad species blueprint but omit the long saltwater or lake migration.

Are trout related to salmon?
Yes. Trout and salmon share the family Salmonidae and many biological features, including cold-water requirements, an egg-to-fry-to-juvenile life cycle, and (in migratory populations) the ability to move between freshwater and saltwater.
Everyday language often uses “salmon” for salmonids that migrate to sea and “trout” for those that remain in freshwater. That is a useful ecological shorthand, not a strict taxonomic rule. Steelhead are trout that migrate to sea, while some salmon populations are landlocked or otherwise nonmigratory.
Trout versus salmon: the practical difference
| Comparison | Trout | Salmon |
|---|---|---|
| Taxonomy | Common names span several Salmonidae genera | Common names also cover multiple salmonid species and genera |
| Typical life history | Many populations remain in freshwater; some are anadromous | Many familiar species hatch in rivers, grow at sea, and return to freshwater |
| Migration | Often local or absent, but steelhead and some brown trout migrate extensively | Sea migration is common in well-known salmon species, but landlocked forms exist |
| Spawning habitat | Usually gravel streams or tributaries; lake trout spawn on lake bottoms | Typically gravel beds in natal freshwater rivers and streams |
Can trout live in the ocean?
Some can. Steelhead spend a substantial growth period in the ocean before returning to freshwater. Sea-run forms of brown trout also occur. These fish are physiologically adapted to shift between freshwater and saltwater, while resident trout populations may never encounter seawater.
“Can trout live in the ocean?” therefore has a population-level answer rather than a single species-wide answer: identify the species and local form first.

Size varies widely by species, population, food supply, and whether the fish is resident or migratory. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service reports steelhead reaching a reported maximum of 11 feet in a jump and 55 pounds; those are exceptional reported limits, not typical sizes. NOAA Fisheries gives typical adult Atlantic salmon at 8 to 12 pounds and up to 30 inches. These figures are not a general size rule for all trout or salmon.
Quick Recap
What to remember when identifying a trout
- Start with the scientific species or a verified local identification, not the word “trout” alone.
- Check whether the population is resident, lake-migratory, or anadromous.
- Use habitat and spawning behavior as clues: stream gravel, tributary runs, or lake-bottom cobble point to different life histories.
- Do not assume every trout shares the same native range, markings, stocking history, or legal status.
- For fishing rules, introductions, or conservation concerns, consult the agency for the specific watershed and jurisdiction.
