Some bettas can live with carefully selected peaceful fish, but a tank mate is optional and never guaranteed to work. Aqueon recommends a peaceful betta community aquarium of 15 gallons or larger. Small Corydoras, peaceful smaller tetras, rasboras and some livebearers are possible candidates; calm barb species may also work. Avoid other adult male bettas, fin-nippers, fast-moving fish and aggressive species. Watch the individual betta closely and remove a companion at the first sign of sustained chasing or attacks.
Fish that may work with a betta
The following are possibilities, not a universal compatibility list. Check the particular species’ adult size, group requirements, flow preference and temperature range before buying it.
| Candidate group | Why it is considered | Important limits |
|---|---|---|
| Small Corydoras | Named as potential companions by Aqueon, Fluval and PetMD | Need suitable floor space and an appropriate group; compatibility still depends on the betta |
| Peaceful smaller tetras | Listed by Aqueon, Fluval and PetMD | “Tetra” is not one temperament: exclude fin-nipping or overly active species and provide adequate space |
| Rasboras | Listed by Aqueon, Fluval and PetMD | Choose a peaceful species and meet its shoaling and space needs |
| Selected livebearers | Aqueon mentions livebearers | Fluval excludes guppies from its livebearer examples, so do not treat guppies as a default pairing |
| Calm barbs | Aqueon lists calm barbs as a possibility | Do not confuse calm species with fin-nipping barbs; tiger barbs are specifically cautioned against |
These groups are best viewed as starting points for evaluation rather than guarantees. Fluval notes that a betta may chase or attack even a fish on a compatibility list.
Fish and pairings to avoid
- Other adult male bettas: males are highly territorial and should be kept separately or partitioned. The Anabantoid Association of Great Britain says never to keep two or more adult males together.
- Male-and-female betta housing: do not keep them together except for controlled breeding.
- Fin-nippers: tiger barbs and similar species can injure a betta’s fins.
- Fast or aggressive fish: Aqueon specifically warns against giant danios and male gouramis; Fluval cautions against other anabantids, fast-moving fish and fin-nippers.
How much aquarium space is needed?
For a betta kept with other fish, Aqueon’s recommendation is 15 gallons or larger. That is a community-tank recommendation, not the minimum for a solitary betta.

- Compact: Dimension: 7.9"x5.9"x5.9"; 1 Gallon tank; ideal for small spaces, aquarium beginners caring for a single betta, a few shrimp, snails, or a tiny goldfish. Also works as a temporary hospital tank, quarantine tank, or desktop decor (After deducting the filter part, the actual usable volume is approximately 0.8 gal and it will further decrease after adding substrate)
- Customizable Lighting: features a 3-color LED hood with 10 adjustable brightness levels to showcase your fish and tank décor
- Self-Cleaning Filtration: Hidden filter keeps tank clean for easier maintenance. Note: Clean filter sponge and pump regularly to avoid clogging; regular water changes are required — this small tank does not support zero-maintenance use
- Thoughtful Design: its top feeding hole allows for easy feeding without removing the lid; four silicone feet for stability and quiet operation
- Complete Starter Kit: 1x 1 gallon Fish Tank, 1x Filter Sponge, 1x Adjustable Water Pump, 1x LED Hood (Note: The light requires a power transformer (not included) for use. Compatible transformers include 5V 0.5A, 5V 1A, 5V 1.5A, and 5V 2A)
| Guidance | What it applies to |
|---|---|
| 15 gallons or larger | Aqueon’s peaceful community aquarium recommendation; publication date is not stated on the reviewed page |
| 10 gallons or larger | PetMD’s 2026 guidance for one betta, because a larger aquarium is often easier to keep stable; it is not a community-stocking threshold |
| 2–5 US gallons | Fluval’s general range for B. splendens housing in a guide hosted under a 2024/12 path; it is not a recommendation for adding community fish |
A 2024 welfare study titled Life beyond a jar reported welfare-related effects of tank size and furnishings and recommended home tanks larger than 5.6 L, with gravel, live plants and refuges. That recommendation concerns betta housing, not compatibility or a safe community stocking level. No published compatibility rate establishes how often betta pairings succeed.
Build the habitat before adding companions
Good equipment supports stable care, but it cannot make an incompatible temperament safe. Prepare and test the aquarium first:

The 3.5 gallon swimming space is an ideal home for a Betta, small schooling fish (like Cardinal Tetra or Zebra Danios), and ornamental shrimp (such as Red Cherry or Blue Velvet)
- A secure lid, because bettas can reach the surface and may jump.
- A filter with low or adjustable flow; excessive current can exhaust a betta, especially long-finned varieties.
- A heater and thermometer for stable warm water. The Anabantoid Association of Great Britain gives approximately 24–28 °C with minimal fluctuation.
- Water conditioner and a water-test kit.
- Live plants, decorations and refuges that provide cover without blocking the betta’s access to the surface.
- Enough open swimming and bottom area for the companion species’ normal behavior and group size.
Bettas breathe atmospheric air at the surface, so avoid excessive surface movement. Maintain clean, stable water and a flow level that all inhabitants can handle.
A cautious introduction and monitoring plan
- Confirm the aquarium is stable. Verify temperature, filtration and water quality before purchasing a companion.
- Check the species, not just its common name. Confirm adult size, shoaling requirements, activity level and fin-nipping risk.
- Provide visual breaks. Plants and refuges let fish retreat and reduce constant line-of-sight contact.
- Observe the first interactions continuously. Occasional investigation is different from repeated pursuit, cornering or biting.
- Separate immediately when necessary. Fluval states that if incompatibility occurs, isolating the B. splendens will be necessary. Have a cycled separation aquarium or other safe plan ready before introduction.
How to decide whether a candidate is suitable
Evaluate every proposed companion on four questions:
Rank #3
- HALF MOON AQUARIUM KIT: Clear plastic, half-moon-shaped front allows for unobstructed viewing.
- IDEAL FOR BETTAS: Bettas require minimal maintenance and make great species for beginners.
- MOVABLE LIGHT: Energy-efficient LEDs can be positioned to light tank from above or below.
- CONVENIENT FEEDING: Clear canopy has a hole to make feeding fish easy.
- PERFECT FOR BEGINNERS: Small aquariums like this 1.1-gallon tank are a great way to get started in the freshwater fishkeeping hobby.
- Is its temperament peaceful, with little risk of fin-nipping or aggression?
- Can the aquarium meet its space and group requirements without overcrowding?
- Can it thrive in the betta’s warm water and gentle-flow environment?
- Has this individual betta already shown chasing or attacking behavior?
If the answer to the last question is yes, keeping the betta alone is the safer choice. A solitary setup is a valid outcome, not a failure.

PetMD lists mystery snails and ghost shrimp as possible companions alongside fish. They are not fish, and the same individual-temperament caveat applies: a betta may harass or attack them, so provide cover and be prepared to separate them.

Common mistakes
- Putting community fish in a 2–5 gallon betta setup because that range is suitable for general betta housing guidance.
- Assuming every tetra, barb or livebearer has the same temperament.
- Adding fish without a refuge, surface access or a way to isolate an incompatible animal.
- Using a calm-looking first day as proof of long-term compatibility; continue monitoring for chasing, damaged fins or chronic hiding.
