Usually, no. Under ordinary conditions, the saline waters of Utah’s Great Salt Lake do not support a normal fish population. High salinity, together with the lake’s algae and halophiles, instead favors brine shrimp and brine flies. Those invertebrates are central food for the millions of birds that use the lake.
That answer needs one historical qualification: exceptionally high water in 1986 lowered salinity in the south arm to about 5%, and fish occupied parts of the lake for a time. The episode shows why “generally” is more accurate than “never,” but it does not make Great Salt Lake a dependable fishery today.
Why Great Salt Lake usually has no fish
Great Salt Lake is an endorheic, or internally drained, lake. Water enters mainly through rivers and precipitation, while evaporation leaves dissolved salts behind. The result is water far saltier than ordinary freshwater lakes and unsuitable for most fish to regulate their internal salt and water balance.
Utah’s Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR) explains that the lake’s high salinity, abundant algae, and halophiles prevent it from supporting fish in the lake proper under normal conditions. Salinity is not identical throughout the lake, however, and it changes with water level, evaporation, inflow, and mixing.

Salinity differs sharply between the two arms
The railroad causeway divides Great Salt Lake into north and south arms with different water chemistry. DWR’s published averages, current as accessed in 2026, illustrate the contrast; they are not live measurements for every date or location.
| Lake section | DWR average salinity | Ecological context |
|---|---|---|
| South arm | About 12–15% | Supports green algae and cyanobacteria, along with brine shrimp and brine flies. |
| North arm | About 26–30% | Much saltier; its pink-orange and violet-pink colors are associated with Dunaliella salina and halophiles. |
These percentages are agency averages, not a promise that every shoreline, season, or depth has the same salinity. Conditions can shift as lake levels and freshwater inflows change.

What animals live in Great Salt Lake instead?
Brine shrimp
Brine shrimp are tiny crustaceans, not fish. They graze on algae and tolerate salinities that exclude most fish. Their eggs, called cysts, are harvested commercially, while living shrimp provide a rich seasonal food source for birds.
Brine flies
Brine flies are insects whose larvae and adults are closely tied to the lake’s saline shoreline. Like brine shrimp, they consume or depend on algae and become abundant food for migrating and resident birds.

Algae, cyanobacteria, and halophiles
Algae form the base of much of the lake’s food web. DWR describes algae as the primary food for brine shrimp and brine flies; some algae also produce oxygen in a setting where oxygen is normally scarce. Green algae and cyanobacteria help give the south arm its green appearance, while salt-tolerant microbes contribute to the north arm’s pink and violet hues.
How the lake supports birds without fish
Great Salt Lake is an important migration and staging area because its invertebrates are plentiful and nutritious. The Utah Division of Water Resources has reported an upper estimate of as many as 12 million birds from 339 species using the lake each year. That is an agency estimate rather than a fixed count for every year.

Salinity, water level, algae production, and shrimp reproduction are linked. When those conditions change, the abundance and distribution of invertebrates can change as well, affecting the food available to birds.
The 1986 exception: when fish occupied parts of the lake
Utah Geological Survey records a notable high-water episode in 1986. Unusually high water diluted the south arm until salinity was about 5%, and fish occupied parts of the lake during that period.

This event does not contradict the usual answer. It demonstrates that fish presence can occur when hydrologic conditions temporarily make part of the lake less saline. It is not evidence of a stable, self-sustaining fish population or a fishery that visitors can count on.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you fish in the Great Salt Lake?
Do not plan a conventional angling trip on the saline lake itself. Official Utah fishing materials provide statewide regulations and destination-search tools, but they do not establish Great Salt Lake as a normal fishery. The lake’s characteristic animals—brine shrimp and brine flies—are not fish and are not substitutes for a sport-fishing population.
If you want to catch fish in Utah, use DWR’s Fish Utah search tools to find a separate fishable waterbody by location, species, or trip rating, then check the current rules for that destination. Regulations, access, and water conditions can change, so verify them before traveling.
Could fish occur near freshwater inflows?
The broad biological answer applies to the saline lake proper. Freshwater rivers, wetlands, and tributary mouths can have different local conditions, and the available information does not establish whether transient fish occasionally occur in every such margin today. A claim about a particular inlet or shoreline would require localized, current biological data rather than extrapolation from the lake-wide average.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat “no fish” does—and does not—mean
- It means: ordinary conditions in the saline lake do not support a normal fish community.
- It does not mean: fish have never entered or occupied any part of the lake under any historical conditions.
- It does not mean: the lake is biologically empty. Brine shrimp, brine flies, algae, cyanobacteria, and halophiles sustain a major bird habitat.
- It does not mean: current salinity is a single fixed number. The two arms and individual sites can differ substantially.
Bottom line for visitors and anglers
Great Salt Lake is generally fishless because its salt concentration is too high for a conventional fish community. Its ecological importance comes from salt-tolerant microbes and invertebrates—especially brine shrimp and brine flies—that feed large numbers of birds. The 1986 high-water event temporarily reduced salinity enough for fish to occupy parts of the south arm, but that unusual history should not be mistaken for present-day fishing opportunity.
