What to Feed Catfish in a Fish Tank: A Species-by-Species Guide

Aquarium catfish do not all eat the same food. Identify the species, choose food that reaches its feeding zone, and feed only what it can finish.

Feed aquarium catfish according to their species, not their reputation as scavengers. Corydoras need food that sinks, algae-grazing fish such as some plecos need suitable prepared food and may benefit from vegetables, and predatory catfish require a species-specific carnivorous diet. Identify your fish first, then offer small portions it can reach and finish.

Start by identifying your catfish

“Catfish” covers fish with different diets. The Ornamental Aquatic Trade Association (OATA) describes Corydoras as omnivores, plecos as herbivores, and predatory catfish as carnivores. Those are broad groupings, not a complete menu for every species. If you do not know the exact fish, identify it before choosing a staple or offering prey foods.

Do not rely on leftovers, algae in the aquarium, or generic flakes to meet a catfish’s nutritional needs. Many catfish feed near the bottom, so food should reach their feeding zone. OATA advises providing appropriate sinking foods rather than assuming scavenging is enough (freshwater catfish care sheet).

What to feed common aquarium catfish

Corydoras

Use a small sinking granule or pellet as a practical staple. A peer-reviewed Corydoras husbandry protocol says readily sinking granular or pelleted food can meet basic adult maintenance needs with once-daily feeding. Choose pieces the fish can consume, and make sure the food actually reaches the bottom rather than being taken by faster tankmates.

Aqueon Shrimp Pellets Sinking Food for Tropical Fish, 6.5 oz
  • Ideal for bottom dwelling fish
  • Nutritious food ingredients that fish are naturally attracted to
  • Formulated so that fish utilize more of what they eat and create less waste
  • Supports a healthy immune system, brings out their true colors and provides the essentials for proper growth and vitality
  • Will not cloud water when fed as directed

Optional variety described in the protocol includes frozen bloodworms or brine shrimp for larger Corydoras, baby brine shrimp or cultured microworms for fry, subadults, or small species, and gel food. These are options, not a requirement to feed every item. Thaw frozen foods separately before feeding. See the Corydoras husbandry protocol for its full guidance.

Algae-grazing fish, including some plecos

Grazing on aquarium algae does not remove the need for an appropriate diet. OATA recommends supplementing algae-grazing species with prepared foods such as algae-based wafers or flakes, and ideally fresh vegetables such as cucumber. This advice applies to suitable grazers; it does not make algae wafers a universal catfish staple.

Hikari® Sinking Wafers® for Bottom-Feeding Tropical Fish, 3.88 oz (110g)
  • Superior nutrition has been scientifically proven by decades of research to meet the dietary needs of corydoras catfish, loaches and other bottom feeders
  • High levels of vegetable matter that bottom feeders prefer, along with highly nutritious spirulina, silkworm and krill
  • Unique disc shape and small wafer size accommodates a wider variety of bottom feeders; fortified with vitamin C and other important vitamins and minerals
  • Wafers can be swallowed easily by larger fish, or will soften gradually allowing smaller fish to eat with ease
  • Extreme digestibility thereby reducing the chances of water clouding

Wash vegetables thoroughly or choose organic produce because pesticide residues may harm fish or invertebrates. OATA’s tropical algae-eater care sheet provides this supplementation guidance.

Predatory catfish

Predatory species need a carnivorous diet, but the appropriate food and feeding approach depend on the exact species and its life stage. The sources cited here do not establish a detailed feeding plan for each predator, so do not assume that foods suitable for Corydoras or plecos are suitable for one. Confirm the species and consult species-specific care guidance before selecting prey foods or portions.

How much and how often to feed

OATA’s general care guidance is to feed once daily, offering only what the fish can eat within a few minutes. It allows up to 30 minutes for some grazing species. The Corydoras protocol also describes once-daily feeding for basic adult maintenance and advises removing food that remains uneaten after a few hours. These are care guidelines, not a universal portion weight or a schedule that applies identically to every species.

  • Start with a small amount and observe how quickly the target fish eats it.
  • Watch whether quicker tankmates take the food before bottom-feeders can find it; adjust placement or feeding access so each fish can eat.
  • Remove persistent leftovers. Uneaten food can encourage microorganism growth and degrade water quality.
  • Adjust the amount based on the fish’s response and body condition rather than using an unsupported fixed weight.

A sunken belly can indicate severe underfeeding, but the Corydoras protocol notes that internal parasites can also cause it. It is not a diagnosis by itself; consider the fish’s overall condition and seek species-appropriate health advice if the change persists.

Choosing a food by type

Food type Best-supported use What to check
Sinking granules or pellets A documented staple option for Corydoras and potentially appropriate omnivorous bottom-feeders Confirm the target species can eat it; check that the pieces sink and are the right size.
Algae-based wafers or flakes Supplement for algae-grazing types such as suitable plecos Confirm the fish is a grazer and treat this as supplementary feed, not universal catfish food.
Frozen or live foods Optional variety for some Corydoras and other species when suitable to species and life stage Do not generalize suitability across catfish; thaw the named frozen foods separately before feeding Corydoras.
Fresh vegetables Potential addition for algae-grazing types Wash thoroughly or buy organic to reduce possible pesticide exposure.
