Some sea fish eat worms, but that does not mean ordinary garden earthworms are interchangeable with marine bait worms. Spot and winter flounder are documented examples of fish that eat worms. For fishing, sources specifically identify marine bloodworms and sandworms as bait; they do not establish how well terrestrial earthworms work in saltwater.
What “regular worms” means
“Regular worms” usually means terrestrial earthworms, such as garden worms or nightcrawlers. Marine bait worms are different: Maine’s Department of Marine Resources identifies bloodworms (Glycera dibranchiata) and sandworms (Nereis virens) as worms harvested for recreational bait. A bloodworm in this context is a marine worm, not an ordinary earthworm.
Marine worms include diverse groups and are part of marine food webs. UF/IFAS Extension describes them as food for many sport and commercial fish. That broad ecological role does not mean every sea fish eats worms or that all kinds of worms make equivalent bait. UF/IFAS Extension: Marine squirmy wormy worms.
Examples of sea fish that eat worms
Spot
North Carolina’s Division of Marine Fisheries says spot feed on crustaceans, organic debris, worms and small fish. Its species profile says anglers usually catch spot with two-hook bottom rigs baited with shrimp, bloodworms or squid. This supports using marine bloodworms for spot; it is not a test of garden earthworms. North Carolina DEQ: Spot.

Winter flounder
NOAA Fisheries lists worms among winter flounder’s foods, along with small invertebrates, shrimp and clams. NOAA also notes that the fish’s small mouth limits the size of prey it can eat. This is evidence that winter flounder eat worms, not evidence that terrestrial earthworms are an effective bait choice for them. NOAA Fisheries: Winter Flounder.
Which worm should you use for saltwater fishing?
If you want worm bait, the evidence-backed choice is a marine bait worm—particularly a bloodworm or sandworm—rather than assuming a garden earthworm will perform the same way. For spot, North Carolina DEQ specifically names bloodworms, shrimp and squid. Florida’s Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission also lists sea worms among good saltwater baits and describes live or frozen shrimp as an excellent all-around saltwater bait. The sources cited here do not compare earthworms with marine bait worms in saltwater. They therefore cannot establish that earthworms are equally effective, ineffective, more durable or less durable. Bait choice depends on the target species and what is available locally; check local authorities for current collection rules and fishing regulations.

Maine’s Department of Marine Resources describes an active marine worm fishery and identifies bloodworms and sandworms as bait used by recreational fishers. It reports that the fishery generated about $8.7 million paid to harvesters in 2020. That is a historical figure for harvester revenue in Maine’s marine worm fishery—not a current bait price, retail-sales estimate or national total. Maine DMR: Marine Worms.
