What Chickens Did During the 2017 Solar Eclipse: One Observer’s Account

Four hens in Seattle clustered during the 2017 partial eclipse, but their observer couldn’t say whether the eclipse caused it. Other reports describe varied chicken behavior, not a universal response.

During Seattle’s partial solar eclipse on August 21, 2017, four hens kept scratching and squawking at first, then clustered together as the eclipse progressed. One went into a nesting box. Reporter Lisa Stiffler couldn’t tell whether the eclipse caused any of it—and her small, uncontrolled observation is best read as a funny account, not proof of a predictable chicken response.

What the four hens did

Stiffler watched the flock as the Moon began covering the Sun in Seattle, which was outside the path of totality. The hens initially squawked, strutted, and scratched at their bedding. Later, they gathered together, and one entered the nesting house. They remained clustered as the partial eclipse peaked.

Stiffler considered ordinary explanations: perhaps the birds were reacting to being watched and photographed, or expecting food. She wondered whether they were settling or huddling as the day cooled, but could not determine whether the eclipse had confused them. Her account appeared in GeekWire.

Did the eclipse make the chickens roost?

There’s no way to establish that from this observation. It involved four hens during a partial eclipse, without a control group or repeated observations of their behavior under comparable conditions. Clustering and entering a nesting box happened during the eclipse, but the account does not show that the eclipse caused those behaviors.

Before the event, University of Washington astronomy professor emeritus Bruce Balick predicted that “birds will roost as the sky darkens, sleep for a few moments, and then get up and start their next day.” That was Balick’s prediction as reported by Stiffler, not a result demonstrated by the four hens.

How the account compares with other observations

Reports from the 1999 eclipse

An abstract about observations during the August 11, 1999 eclipse says laying hens and broilers crowded together and were “very quiet and restless” during totality. The study covered birds, cattle, bees, and horses over six hours. Its reported behavior belongs to that study and those circumstances; it does not establish a rule for how chickens respond to every eclipse. Read the study abstract at TÜBİTAK Academic Journals.

A 2019 synthesis of published and social-media records

A peer-reviewed synthesis compared published accounts with informal social-media observations and emphasized that reported responses vary by species and study. Among the records the authors compiled, 62 involved birds—37% of the compiled literature observations—and represented 51 bird species. Chickens made up 7.8% of those bird observations. These are counts in the paper’s collected records, not estimates of how often birds or chickens respond across the wider population. Read the 2019 paper in Animals.

Preliminary monitoring during the 2026 eclipse

A University of Zaragoza research institute report dated August 25, 2026, describes monitoring during the August 12 total eclipse. Researchers used accelerometers on 16 chickens in Zaragoza and six in Burgos; some birds also wore sensors for physiological measures. The report says activity timing shifted at both sites, but the pattern differed: five of the six Burgos chickens began an evening-like transition roughly 40–60 minutes earlier than usual, while all six were less active than reference expectations during a later interval. At Zaragoza, the 16 chickens did not show lower overall daily activity, though the timing changed; the reported median advance for the transition was about 18 minutes.

  • WATERPROOF UV-RESISTANT COVER: The peaked roof and detachable cover help shed rain and snow while providing shade from direct sunlight, making the chicken run suitable for backyard outdoor use.
  • STRAIGHTFORWARD DIY ASSEMBLY: Clearly labeled frame components and detailed instructions help simplify installation. Allow approximately 2 hours for assembly, depending on experience and site conditions.

The report describes preliminary, site-specific observations, not a universal chicken response. The researchers caution that the shifts are not necessarily all direct effects of the eclipse, which occurred close to natural sunset. Read the University of Zaragoza research institute report.

What these observations can—and can’t—tell us

The evidence ranges from a reporter watching four hens to observational records and preliminary sensor monitoring. It comes from different eclipse conditions and times of day, and the accounts describe different behaviors: clustering, quietness, roosting, and shifts in activity timing. Taken together, they show that unusual behavior has been reported during eclipses; they do not establish one typical response or prove that the eclipse itself caused every observed change.
