Italy’s First Described Mediterranean Mesophotic Coral Reef: What Was Found off Monopoli

Off Monopoli, researchers mapped the first described Mediterranean mesophotic coral reef: a low-light structure built by non-symbiotic corals, worm tubes and bivalves.

Scientists mapped a coral reef off Monopoli on Italy’s Apulian Adriatic coast at depths of about 30–55 metres. The 2019 study called it the first described Mediterranean mesophotic coral reef—not the first coral formation of any kind in Italy or the Adriatic. Two non-symbiotic stony corals build much of its framework, with worm tubes and bivalves helping bind it together.

Where is the Adriatic reef, and how deep is it?

The reef lies offshore from the Monopoli area of Apulia, on Italy’s Adriatic coast. Corriero and colleagues reported it at approximately 30–55 metres deep in their 2019 study, “A Mediterranean mesophotic coral reef built by non-symbiotic scleractinians”. The study’s abstract summarizes the bioconstruction as extending 2.5 kilometres. Its detailed mapping describes discontinuous reef framework along 2.09 kilometres of coastline, covering 0.050 km², as well as 0.048 km² of patches on fine soft sediment. These are different descriptions of extent, not interchangeable measurements.

Why was it called the first Mediterranean mesophotic coral reef?

In the paper published on 5 March 2019, the authors described the discovery as “the first description of a Mediterranean mesophotic coral reef.” Mesophotic refers to a low-light marine zone deeper than typical shallow-water reef environments; here, the mapped habitat was at 30–55 metres.

The wording matters: the study establishes the first described example of this particular kind of reef in the Mediterranean. It does not establish that this was Italy’s first coral community, coral formation, or biogenic reef of any kind. The familiar image of a tropical reef—built by corals living with photosynthetic algae—is not a good match for this one.

Which corals and other organisms build the reef?

Two non-symbiotic stony corals

The principal framework builders are the stony corals Phyllangia americana mouchezii and Polycyathus muellerae. They lack photosynthetic algal symbionts, so they are not dependent on the same light-powered partnership that supports many familiar tropical reef corals.

Worm tubes and bivalves help bind the structure

Calcified tubes made by serpulid polychaete worms form an interlocking mesh around the coral skeletons. Bivalves, especially Neopycnodonte cochlear, also add to the reef’s compact structure. The framework is therefore a construction made by several kinds of organisms, not coral skeletons alone.

A diverse sampled community

Biological samples identified 153 taxa among the taxonomic groups considered in the study, with sponges the richest group. That figure describes sampled taxa; it is not a complete count of every organism living across the reef.

How did researchers map and document it?

The finding was based on several complementary methods, rather than a single visual sighting. Researchers combined high-resolution side-scan sonar and sub-bottom profiling with remotely operated vehicle (ROV) transects, scuba-diving surveys, video, and biological samples. Geophysical mapping helped identify and chart the structure, while direct observations and samples helped characterize its builders and associated organisms.

How is it different from the Bari Canyon corals?

The Monopoli mesophotic reef should not be confused with the separate cold-water coral habitat of the Bari Canyon System, on the southwestern margin of the southern Adriatic. A CNR repository record says oceanographic cruises have explored Bari Canyon since 2003 and identifies Madrepora oculata as its principal framework builder.

CNR material from 2024 also distinguishes Bari Canyon cold-water corals from deep-water oyster reefs on the Monopoli continental shelf. The habitats have different locations or settings and are described with different principal builders:

The same CNR 2024 material describes planned or ongoing work including ROV documentation, marine-litter removal, and deployment of 3D-printed artificial reef structures in damaged cold-water coral areas at Bari Canyon and Dohrn Canyon. Those are restoration initiatives, not evidence that the Monopoli mesophotic reef was restored or that the proposed work produced a measured recovery.
