Cala, the orange cat whose distinctive meows became known as “I go meow,” died on May 30, 2024. Her owner, Elizabeth, said Cala had been ill and was not improving, and that she died in her arms. The circumstances and cause below are attributed to Elizabeth through news reports quoting her social-media announcement.
What happened to the “I Go Meow” cat?
Elizabeth announced Cala’s death on May 30, 2024. In a TikTok announcement quoted by Tech Times on May 31, 2024, she said Cala had fallen ill and was not getting better. Elizabeth said, “She ultimately passed away in my arms due to old age.” That is the cause Elizabeth gave; the reports do not establish an independent veterinary diagnosis.
Elizabeth also reportedly said she had adopted Cala believing she was young, then later learned Cala was older than both she and the shelter had initially thought. The reviewed coverage does not establish Cala’s exact age with confidence, so a precise age should not be treated as confirmed.
Why was Cala famous?
Cala became popular through a video of her distinctive meows, which listeners heard as “I go meow.” The phrase became a shorthand for the clip, and South African musician The Kiffness turned the viral audio into a song, as noted by TMZ’s May 31, 2024 report.

Elizabeth’s message, as quoted by Tech Times, also reflected the connection Cala had built with viewers: “You all will allow her to live on forever. To never be forgotten for how special she is,” she said. For fans, the clip’s simple, unmistakable sound remains the part of Cala’s story most readily shared: an ordinary cat’s meow heard, and remembered, as “I go meow.”
