Cockroach milk is not milked from insects like cow’s milk. In the only cockroach currently described as milk-producing, the Pacific beetle cockroach (Diploptera punctata), a pregnant female releases a nutrient-rich secretion inside her brood sac. Developing embryos drink it, and their midguts pack the nutrients into crystals. Scientists can study that secretion or isolate those crystals, but no evidence establishes a safe, approved, scalable cockroach-milk food for people.
Which cockroach produces milk?
Diploptera punctata, commonly called the Pacific beetle cockroach, is the only known cockroach described in the cited structural studies as both viviparous and milk-producing. Viviparous means the embryos develop inside the mother rather than hatching from an external egg case.
The female carries approximately 9–13 embryos in a brood sac. That sac functions like a uterus and pseudo-placenta, supplying the developing young with a milk-like secretion during a reported 60–70-day gestation.
How the secretion is made inside the insect
1. The brood sac supplies liquid nutrition
A pregnant female secretes a water-based fluid into the brood sac. The fluid contains proteins, free amino acids, carbohydrates and lipids. Its major proteins are lipocalin-like milk proteins known as Lili-Mip.

- How To Use Whole Milk Powder: Add to smoothies and milkshakes for extra creaminess and protein. Blend into soups and sauces for a rich, velvety texture. Add dried whole milk to homemade baking mixes and hot cocoa mix.
- Mixing Instructions for Liquid Milk: To make one gallon of whole milk, mix 4 1/2 cups of dried whole milk with 14 1/2 cups of warm water. We recommend using a whisk, milk frother, or hand mixer for a smooth and creamy consistency every time. Cover and refrigerate mix overnight before using for best results. Please note that this is not an instant product.
- 1LB of powder makes 12 cups!
- Storage: Store powder in a cool, dry place to prolong shelf life. We do not recommend refrigerating or freezing dairy powders.
2. Embryos drink the secretion
The embryos ingest the liquid directly while developing in the brood sac. This is a biological feeding system, not a teat, udder or external milking process.
3. Nutrients crystallize in the embryo gut
After ingestion, the milk proteins form tightly packed crystals in the embryos’ midguts. The 2016 structural study describes glycosylated proteins with a lipocalin fold that bind lipids and build a crystalline lattice. The crystals act as a compact nutrient store: they dissolve as the embryo consumes them, releasing energy and other nutrients over time.
Crystallized milk was reported in embryo gut contents after about 15 days of the relevant developmental period. A 2020 study identified 25 milk-protein messenger RNAs encoding 22 proteins and found that milk-protein expression rises during pregnancy. Its experiments implicated juvenile-hormone regulation in maintaining production.

- [Proven Roach Elimination] Our roach repellent powder bait contains a powerful attractant that lures cockroaches to consume and carry the formula back to their nests. The unique delayed-action effect ensures infected roaches spread the powder throughout the colony before dying, effectively eliminating German, American, and Oriental cockroaches at their source. You'll notice significantly reduced activity within 3-7 days, with complete colony elimination typically achieved within 2-3 weeks.
- [Effective Against All Common Roaches] This specialized powder has been tested to work against all major cockroach species, including stubborn German cockroaches (the most common household invaders), large American cockroaches, moisture-loving Oriental cockroaches, and flying Asian cockroaches. The dual-attractant system appeals to different roach feeding preferences, making it the most versatile solution for various infestation problems throughout homes and commercial spaces.
- [Simple Application Process] Applying our roach-killing powder requires no special tools or equipment. Simply sprinkle a thin layer of powder in areas where roaches hide and travel - including kitchen cabinet corners, behind appliances, under sinks, along baseboards, and in bathroom plumbing access points. The fine powder particles naturally settle into cracks and crevices where roaches nest, providing thorough coverage without messy residue or staining.
- [Extended Residual Protection] Unlike liquid sprays that evaporate quickly, our roach powder formula remains potent for up to 30 days after application. The powder bonds to surfaces and resists moisture, continuing to work even after routine cleaning. The low-odor formula is safe for use around children and pets when applied properly in targeted areas away from open spaces.
- [Superior Colony Control] Traditional roach sprays and traps only address visible insects, while our powder bait works continuously to destroy entire colonies at their source - including hidden egg cases and developing nymphs. The long-residual action creates an ongoing protective barrier that prevents reinfestation for months.
What researchers mean by “cockroach milk”
The phrase can refer to two related but different materials:
- Brood-sac secretion: the liquid milk-like fluid produced by the pregnant female.
- Embryo-gut crystals: concentrated crystals formed after embryos consume that fluid.
Laboratory work therefore involves pregnant females, brood-sac contents or dissected embryo material. There is no practical step in which a farmer collects a stream of milk from adult cockroaches. The 2016 paper analyzed crystals isolated from an embryo midgut.
Why the crystals are called a “superfood”
The headline claim comes from an energy-density estimate in structural biology, not from a human feeding trial. The study estimated that one crystal contains about 3.7 × 10−5 joule and wrote that a single crystal contains more than three times the energy of an equal mass of dairy milk.

That comparison applies to the mass of an isolated embryo-gut crystal versus the same mass of dairy milk. It does not establish a serving size, a recommended diet, digestibility, an allergy profile, a health benefit or superiority for people. “Superfood” is a descriptive media and review term here, not a regulated nutritional category.
A 2024 peer-reviewed review presents cockroach milk as a potential superfood because of its concentrated nutrients and possible environmental advantages, while also identifying major obstacles before it could become a staple food. The cited literature does not document a completed human safety evaluation, a food-approval decision or an established retail supply.
Can humans drink cockroach milk?
There is no established answer that it is safe for human consumption. The available evidence describes insect development, protein structure and gene expression rather than controlled human nutrition.

How it compares with dairy and plant milks
| Comparison point | Cockroach milk in the cited studies | Dairy milk | Plant milks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Biological source | Brood-sac secretion from D. punctata; nutrients crystallized in embryo midguts | Milk collected from farmed mammals | Extracted or processed from plants such as soy, oats, almonds or peas |
| Nutrient form | Lipocalin-like protein crystals carrying protein, lipid and carbohydrate | Liquid emulsion containing dissolved and suspended nutrients | Liquid formulations whose protein and fat structure varies by crop and processing |
| Evidence relevant to human nutrition | Structural and insect-development studies; human evidence is not established in the cited sources | Extensive food-use history and human nutrition research | Human nutrition evidence varies by product and fortification |
| Production scale | Laboratory material; future biotechnology is proposed, not demonstrated commercially | Established agricultural and processing supply chains | Established agricultural and processing supply chains |
| Regulatory status as a consumer food | No approval or verified retail product is documented in the cited sources | Regulated food category in many jurisdictions | Regulated food products, with rules differing by jurisdiction |
Could cockroach milk be produced at commercial scale?
Direct harvesting would be difficult. The secretion is inside a brood sac, and the concentrated crystals are inside tiny embryo guts. Collecting enough material would require maintaining pregnant females, recovering embryos and dissecting or processing them. That is fundamentally different from milking a mammal or pressing a plant.
Likely biotechnology route
The more plausible future approach would be recombinant production of the relevant milk proteins, or another controlled biotechnology process that recreates their nutritional properties. The 2024 review discusses this as a research possibility, not as a demonstrated manufacturing method. It remains necessary to establish production yields, purity, formulation, digestibility, safety, allergenicity and regulatory compliance.

Why “high energy density” is not enough
A concentrated crystal can contain substantial energy by mass and still be unsuitable as a food. A commercial ingredient would need a reproducible composition, safe processing, acceptable taste and texture, stable storage, validated dosing and evidence that the nutrients are bioavailable to humans.
What is known—and what is not
- Established: D. punctata embryos consume a maternal milk-like secretion in the brood sac.
- Established: proteins, amino acids, carbohydrates and lipids are present, with Lili-Mip proteins forming nutrient crystals in embryo midguts.
- Estimated: one isolated crystal has more than three times the energy of an equal mass of dairy milk.
- Not established: a safe human serving, clinical benefit, allergy profile, approved food use or scalable commercial process.
For now, “cockroach milk” is best understood as a remarkable insect-development discovery and a possible biotechnology research target—not as a proven human superfood.
