No. Mono Lake itself has no fish, so it is not a fishing lake. If you want to fish during a visit to the Mono Basin, nearby freshwater streams such as Lee Vining Creek are a separate option, with rules that depend on the exact stretch and season.
Why Mono Lake itself is not a fishing destination
Mono Lake is a saline lake, not a freshwater trout fishery. The Mono Lake Committee describes it as having no fish; instead, its characteristic animal life includes brine shrimp and alkali flies, as noted in the Committee’s Mono Lake Newsletter from Summer 2016. Mono Lake Committee
Freshwater streams feed the lake, but a stream and the lake are different waters with different habitats and regulations. When people use “fishing at Mono Lake” to mean fishing in the surrounding basin, they generally mean a nearby stream—not casting into the lake.
Where nearby fishing may be possible
Lee Vining Creek is a separate trout-fishing option in Mono County. The county’s fishing information describes opportunities on the creek, but rules vary by water and reach. The 2026 California freshwater regulations specifically list the stretch from the Lee Vining conduit downstream to Mono Lake; do not assume that rule applies to every part of the creek or to other nearby waters.
