It belongs to the family Serranidae, the sea bass family, and is not a catch-all name for every fish sold as “sea bass.” Along the U.S. East Coast it lives around reefs, wrecks, and oyster beds, and it is valued as a mild, firm-textured food fish.

What species is black sea bass?
The accepted scientific name is Centropristis striata. In classification terms, NOAA places it in class Actinopterygii, order Perciformes, and family Serranidae. In everyday language, it is a marine fish in the sea bass family.
The common name matters because “sea bass” is also used in markets for unrelated or different species. A label that only says sea bass does not, by itself, prove that the fish is black sea bass. The scientific name Centropristis striata is the clearest way to identify this species.
Where does black sea bass live?
Geographic range
NOAA describes the U.S. East Coast range as extending from Cape Cod to the Gulf of America. The species occupies temperate and subtropical coastal waters within that broad range.

Habitat
Black sea bass favor structure that provides shelter and feeding opportunities. Commonly described habitats include natural and artificial reefs, shipwrecks, and oyster beds. These features are why anglers often associate the fish with rocky or otherwise complex bottom rather than open, featureless seabed.
Seasonal movement
Movement differs by region. In the Mid-Atlantic, black sea bass generally move into inshore coastal waters and bays in spring and back offshore in fall. NOAA says South Atlantic fish do not tend to migrate as far, so the Mid-Atlantic pattern should not be treated as a universal rule for every part of the range.
How can you identify a black sea bass?
Color and body markings
- Adults are usually black, while smaller fish can appear dusky brown.
- The belly is paler than the back.
- The fins are dark.
- The dorsal fin has distinctive white spots and bands.
Breeding-season change
During spawning, dominant males may turn bright blue and develop a blue hump on the head. That temporary breeding appearance can look very different from the species’ usual dark coloration.

Sex change during growth
Most black sea bass begin life as females and become males as they mature and grow. NOAA reports that researchers are not sure why this species follows that pattern.
Growth, reproduction, and lifespan
NOAA reports that black sea bass grow slowly and can reproduce at roughly 1 to 3 years old. Spawning occurs along the coast from January through July. Depending on her size, a female may produce about 30,000 to 500,000 eggs in a spawning season.

Reported maximum lifespans are up to 8 years for females and up to 12 years for males. NOAA also reports a maximum size of 2 feet and 9 pounds. Those figures describe the upper end documented by the agency, not the size, age, or egg production readers should expect from an average fish.
Diet
Black sea bass eat prey available in their habitat, especially crabs, shrimp, worms, small fish, and clams.
Is black sea bass good to eat?
NOAA describes the flavor as mild and somewhat delicate, with meat that is tender but firm. Raw flesh should be sparkling white and translucent; when cooked, it should be snow white. Those qualities make the fish suitable for preparations where a subtle flavor and clean, firm flakes are preferred.

Nutrition
NOAA’s nutrition panel lists, per 100 grams of raw black sea bass, 97 calories, 18.43 grams of protein, and 2 grams of total fat. The agency also describes it as a low-fat source of protein and magnesium. These values apply to the raw serving basis shown by NOAA and should not be assumed to describe a cooked portion or a recipe with added ingredients.

Separate Mid-Atlantic and South Atlantic stocks
| Stock | NOAA status | Assessment or data year |
|---|---|---|
| Mid-Atlantic | Not overfished and not subject to overfishing | Supported by a 2025 stock assessment |
| South Atlantic | Not overfished; not subject to overfishing based on 2023 catch data | Not-overfished determination supported by a 2018 assessment |
NOAA cautions that black sea bass biology is not fully understood, data are limited, and the stock assessments have a high degree of uncertainty. The status statements therefore need to be read with those qualifications rather than as a guarantee that every local population is equally well documented.
What “U.S. wild-caught” means
NOAA describes U.S. wild-caught black sea bass as sustainably managed and responsibly harvested under U.S. regulations. That statement applies to the U.S. fishery; it does not establish that every product marketed with a sea bass name is black sea bass, wild-caught, U.S.-caught, or covered by the same management system.

Management depends on location
North of Cape Hatteras, NOAA works with the Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council and the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission. South of Cape Hatteras, NOAA and the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council manage the fishery. Recreational seasons, size limits, and bag limits can be state or regional requirements, so anglers must check the current rules for the place and year in which they fish.
For scale, NOAA’s 2026 specifications list a commercial quota of 7.83 million pounds and a recreational harvest limit of 8.14 million pounds. Those are annual, time-sensitive specifications, not permanent catch allowances.
How much black sea bass is landed?
- NOAA Fisheries reports 4.8 million pounds in commercial landings, valued at $12.6 million, for 2024.
- NOAA Fisheries reports 6 million pounds landed by recreational anglers in 2024.
These are NOAA-reported fishery figures for 2024, not estimates of the species’ total population or a forecast for future landings.
How is black sea bass different from other “sea bass”?
The name “sea bass” covers more than one kind of fish in commerce. To determine whether a fish is specifically black sea bass, compare the scientific name, geographic source, habitat, and identifying traits. For seafood, also check whether it is wild-caught or farmed and where it was harvested. A generic sea-bass label cannot supply those details on its own.

Black sea bass should therefore be treated as the species Centropristis striata, not as a synonym for every fish sold under a sea-bass label.
