Yes. Common carp (Cyprinus carpio) are primarily freshwater fish. They normally live in lakes, ponds, and slow-moving or still sections of rivers. They can also tolerate brackish water and have been recorded in coastal waters, so “freshwater fish” describes their usual ecology rather than an inability to survive any salt.
What kind of water do carp normally live in?
Common carp favor warm, relatively deep, slow-flowing or still water. Typical habitats include lowland rivers, river backwaters, large vegetated lakes, ponds, and the lower sections of rivers where currents are moderate or weak.
FishBase classifies the species’ environment as “freshwater; brackish; benthopelagic.” Benthopelagic means carp use both the lower part of the water column near the bottom and the water above it. Their feeding behavior often brings them into contact with sediments and aquatic vegetation.
Can carp live in saltwater?
Common carp are not marine fish, but they are unusually tolerant of salinity for a freshwater species. The U.S. Geological Survey reports common carp captured in U.S. waters with salinities as high as 17.6 parts per thousand (USGS profile updated 2026).

That level is brackish rather than fully marine seawater. Salinity tolerance allows carp to enter estuaries, coastal backwaters, bays, and other waters where fresh and salt water mix. It does not change their normal classification: most of their life and distribution are associated with freshwater systems.

Do carp live in lakes or rivers?
They live in both. In lakes and ponds, carp often occupy shallow or moderately deep areas with soft bottoms and vegetation. In rivers, they are most typical of slow reaches, pools, backwaters, and lower sections rather than swift, rocky headwaters.

They may move between connected habitats as water levels, temperature, food, and spawning conditions change. A carp caught in an estuary is therefore not evidence that the species is primarily marine; it reflects the species’ ability to use a wider salinity range than many freshwater fish.
Why common carp can affect freshwater habitats
Common carp feed by rooting through bottom sediments. The U.S. Geological Survey reports that this activity can uproot aquatic plants, increase turbidity, and degrade habitat. Cloudier water and reduced vegetation can alter conditions for other fish, invertebrates, and waterfowl.

USGS records common carp in every U.S. state except Alaska. Their broad distribution reflects both their environmental tolerance and long-standing human movement of the species. Local rules may regulate possession, transport, or removal because ecological effects differ among watersheds.
Common carp, koi, and related names
The species is identified as Cyprinus carpio. Common names include European carp, German carp, mirror carp, and leather carp. Koi are domesticated ornamental forms associated with the same species complex and are commonly kept in freshwater ponds.

A USGS profile lists a maximum size of 122 centimeters. Individual size varies with genetics, food supply, habitat, and age, so that figure is a recorded maximum rather than the expected size of every carp.

People have cultured common carp for about 2,500 years, according to the USGS Fish Health Program. Today they remain popular as angling fish and ornamental animals. Those uses have helped establish carp in waters far beyond their original range, while their tolerance of varied freshwater and mildly brackish conditions helps them persist once present.

Bottom line for fish keepers and anglers
Classify carp as freshwater fish. Expect them mainly in lakes, ponds, and slow or still river habitats, but remember that common carp can enter brackish estuaries and coastal backwaters. “Freshwater” describes where they usually live; it is not a claim that they require zero salinity under every circumstance.
