Your cat’s first veterinary appointment is a chance to establish a health baseline, review their history and decide what care makes sense for them—not a one-size-fits-all checklist. Bring any records you have, use a secure carrier, and call the clinic in advance to ask what it wants you to bring. The veterinarian will tailor the exam and next steps to your cat’s age, health, history and risks.

What should I bring to my cat’s first vet visit?

Bring the information you have, even if it is incomplete. Adoption paperwork or notes from a shelter, breeder, rescue or previous owner can help the veterinarian understand what has already been done and what still needs attention.

  • Vaccination records and any prior medical notes.
  • The names or packaging for current medications and flea, tick or other parasite preventives.
  • A brief list of symptoms or concerns, when they began, and any changes in appetite, drinking, litter-box habits or activity.
  • Your questions about diet, behavior, vaccines, preventive care or follow-up.

Ask the clinic whether it wants a stool sample and how fresh it should be. VCA’s cat-specific preparation guidance suggests a sample collected within the previous 24 hours, but clinic instructions may differ. Call ahead about forms, fees and any other preparation. Do not fast your cat unless your own clinic specifically tells you to.

How to prepare your cat for the appointment

Make the carrier familiar

Leave the carrier out before appointment day so your cat has time to explore it. Add familiar soft bedding, such as a towel or blanket, and bring favored treats if they are suitable for your cat. A secure carrier with a top opening or removable top can make access easier during the visit. Choose one that is easy to clean and that your cat can settle into; these are practical features, not a guarantee that travel will be stress-free.

The Feline Veterinary Medical Association advises acclimating cats to their carrier, travel and veterinary practice to help make visits a better experience. Its 2024 handout also suggests covering the carrier. Pheromone products for bedding are optional; if you use a spray, apply it before travel and keep your cat away while spraying. Do not assume it will calm every cat.

Tell the clinic about travel stress

If your cat has a history of severe fear or motion stress, let the clinic know before the appointment and ask what options are appropriate. Discuss any calming medication with the veterinarian; do not give medication on your own initiative.

What happens during a cat’s first veterinary visit?

First, the veterinarian asks about your cat’s history

Be ready to describe your cat’s age or estimated age, where they came from, what they eat, appetite, litter-box habits, behavior, medications, previous vaccines and any symptoms. It is fine to say when you do not know an answer—the veterinarian can use that uncertainty when considering what to check or recommend.

Then comes a general physical examination

The veterinarian may examine your cat from head to tail, including the eyes, ears, nose, mouth and teeth, skin and coat, heart and lungs, abdomen, legs and back. The veterinarian may also look for external parasites. The exact exam and any additional checks depend on your cat’s condition and history.

You will discuss preventive care and next steps

A first visit commonly includes a review of vaccine history and a conversation about parasite prevention, dental care, microchipping and spay or neuter timing. The veterinarian may recommend vaccination, testing or treatment based on the records and risks for this cat; these are not automatically the same package for every patient.

When should a kitten start veterinary visits?

Kittens often begin veterinary care while they are still completing their early vaccine series, but the appropriate timing depends on age, documented history and the veterinarian’s protocol. VCA describes visits beginning around six to eight weeks and recurring every three to four weeks through sixteen to twenty weeks. Cornell Feline Health Center guidance describes FVRCP vaccination starting at six to eight weeks, with boosters at three- to four-week intervals through sixteen to twenty weeks. These are general schedule guidelines, not an individual prescription. Bring the kitten’s records and have the veterinarian set the plan.

What if your new cat’s history is unknown?

Arrange a veterinary check soon after bringing a new cat home. When history is unknown, Cornell says the veterinarian may recommend testing for feline leukemia virus (FeLV) and feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV), along with checks for internal and external parasites. Until a veterinarian has assessed the health risk, keep the newcomer separated from resident cats—particularly when the newcomer’s history is unclear.
