There isn’t one best October bass lure everywhere. Choose by where fish are holding, what they’re chasing, the cover in front of you, and how quickly you need to search. These five options cover the main situations: a walking topwater for surface activity, a spinnerbait for shallow searching, a lipless crankbait for covering water, a soft swimbait for deeper or schooling fish, and a jig for a slower, cover-focused approach.
How to choose an October bass lure
October can bring bass into shallow water to chase baitfish, but fish may also be spread across depths. Start with a lure that searches the likely area efficiently; once you locate fish, adjust depth and retrieve speed to keep the bait in their zone. Cooling trends, forage, cover, and water clarity all matter more than the calendar alone.
- Surface activity: Try a walking topwater when bass are feeding near the surface.
- Shallow cover: A spinnerbait can search around shallow areas, while a jig is useful when you want to work specific cover more slowly.
- Fish chasing baitfish: A lipless crankbait covers water quickly; a soft swimbait can suit fish holding deeper or schooling.
- Late-fall cooling: Be ready to slow down and fish deeper as conditions change. Pennsylvania guidance offers one regional example, but its temperature cues are not universal thresholds.
These are practical choices, not a ranked test: the cited sources do not establish controlled, comparative catch-rate data.
1. Walking topwater: for bass feeding near the surface
A walking bait is a sensible early-day option or choice when you see surface activity. Fall topwater recommendations include walking baits, but the best style depends on the cover. In its fall guidance, Whiskey Riff distinguishes clean water from wood or vegetation near the surface: a plopper-style bait can suit cleaner water, while a buzzbait is an option around that shallow cover. Field & Stream’s fall lure guide and Whiskey Riff’s October recommendations discuss these choices.

- Easy Catch Design – Three Actions in One Lure The Swimmax delivers wiggling, vibrating, gurgling and rattling noise at the same time. Steady retrieve triggers a lifelike swimming action with internal rattles that call fish from a distance – more actions, less effort. Ideal for family fishing.
- Heavy-Duty Dyneema Fiber Joint – Built to Last Unlike soft plastic joints that tear easily, the Swimmax features a strong Dyneema fiber connection between segments. This allows free movement while withstanding repeated strikes from toothy fish – no more broken jointed swimbaits.
- Wiggling & Vibrating Swim – Natural Baitfish Imitation The segmented body creates a seductive side‑to‑side wiggle combined with a tight vibrating swim. Mimics a wounded or fleeing baitfish with incredible realism – irresistible to bass, trout, and crappie.
- Rattling and Gurgling Noise – Attracts Fish from Afar Internal rattles produce rattling sound while segments disturb water and create gurgling noise that mimics feeding activity. This acoustic trigger draws curious predators even in murky water or low light – you'll get more strikes before the fish even see the lure.
- BKK Hook & Family-Friendly Design – Ready for Everyone Equipped with sharp, corrosion‑resistant BKK hooks, the Swimmax is easy to use and perfect for family fishing trips. Kids and adults alike can enjoy catching bass, trout, and crappie without complicated setups.
2. Spinnerbait: for searching shallow water
A spinnerbait is a moving, baitfish-like option for covering shallow areas. It appears among broad fall recommendations from Field & Stream and among the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission’s favorite shallow-water fall lures. Use it when you want to search water rather than probe one small piece of cover with a slow presentation. The Pennsylvania article is regional guidance, not a claim that all October bass are shallow.
3. Lipless crankbait: for covering water and chasing baitfish
When bass are pursuing baitfish or schooling, a lipless crankbait lets you search quickly. Tackle Warehouse names the Jackall TN 70 as its October staff pick and describes it as suitable over hard bottom or grass, from the bank down to 12 feet or deeper. Its staff also identifies the Bill Lewis Rat-L-Trap as a classic alternative. Field & Stream also includes the Rat-L-Trap among fall crankbait choices. See Tackle Warehouse’s October staff picks and Field & Stream’s fall lure guide.

4. Soft swimbait: for deeper or schooling fish
A soft swimbait offers a baitfish profile when fish are deeper or schooling. Tackle Warehouse’s October staff selection is the Keitech Shad Impact on a drop-shot rig. The staff recommends a longer leader and small movements followed by a pause, rather than a fast, constant retrieve. That makes it a distinct option from a lipless crankbait: use the crankbait to cover water quickly, and consider the drop-shot presentation when you want to work a deeper area more deliberately.
5. Jig: for cover and a slower presentation
A jig is a useful choice when bass are close to hard cover or the bite calls for a slower approach. Whiskey Riff points to docks, laydowns, brush, and remaining grass as targets. For later-fall conditions, the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission article includes a casting jig among deeper presentations. Its author, Darl Black, also describes a swim jig as a low-snag option that can be worked with varied retrieves through different cover. A jig is less about searching open water quickly and more about placing and working a presentation around likely holding spots.

How October changes as water cools
Early October and late fall can call for different depths and speeds. In Pennsylvania’s regional late-fall guidance, Darl Black says that near 50°F, baitfish and bass begin moving from the shallowest water toward deeper areas; below 50°F, bass concentrate around deeper structure. The article recommends slow retrieves close to the bottom in colder late-fall conditions and discusses deep crankbaits with suspend strips, swimbaits, casting jigs, and blade baits. Those temperature cues are practical advice for that regional article, not universal biological cutoffs. Read the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission’s late-fall bass guidance.

Make the choice at the water
- Look for activity and likely depth. Surface feeding points toward a walking topwater; schooling or chasing baitfish makes a lipless crankbait or swimbait more relevant.
- Match the cover. Choose a topwater style for the surface conditions, use a spinnerbait to search shallow water, or work a jig around docks, wood, brush, grass, or other cover.
- Adjust as conditions cool. If shallow activity fades and fish appear deeper, slow down and consider a swimbait, jig, or other bottom-oriented presentation.
- Change one variable at a time. If fish are present but not responding, adjust depth, speed, or lure style rather than assuming one October pattern applies everywhere.
