How to choose an October bass lure
October can bring bass into shallow water to chase baitfish, but fish may also be spread across depths. Start with a lure that searches the likely area efficiently; once you locate fish, adjust depth and retrieve speed to keep the bait in their zone. Cooling trends, forage, cover, and water clarity all matter more than the calendar alone.
- Surface activity: Try a walking topwater when bass are feeding near the surface.
- Shallow cover: A spinnerbait can search around shallow areas, while a jig is useful when you want to work specific cover more slowly.
- Fish chasing baitfish: A lipless crankbait covers water quickly; a soft swimbait can suit fish holding deeper or schooling.
- Late-fall cooling: Be ready to slow down and fish deeper as conditions change. Pennsylvania guidance offers one regional example, but its temperature cues are not universal thresholds.

1. Walking topwater: for bass feeding near the surface
A walking bait is a sensible early-day option or choice when you see surface activity. Fall topwater recommendations include walking baits, but the best style depends on the cover. In its fall guidance, Whiskey Riff distinguishes clean water from wood or vegetation near the surface: a plopper-style bait can suit cleaner water, while a buzzbait is an option around that shallow cover. When bass are pursuing baitfish or schooling, a lipless crankbait lets you search quickly. Tackle Warehouse names the Jackall TN 70 as its October staff pick and describes it as suitable over hard bottom or grass, from the bank down to 12 feet or deeper. A jig is a useful choice when bass are close to hard cover or the bite calls for a slower approach. Whiskey Riff points to docks, laydowns, brush, and remaining grass as targets. For later-fall conditions, the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission article includes a casting jig among deeper presentations. Its author, Darl Black, also describes a swim jig as a low-snag option that can be worked with varied retrieves through different cover. A jig is less about searching open water quickly and more about placing and working a presentation around likely holding spots.

How October changes as water cools
Early October and late fall can call for different depths and speeds. In Pennsylvania’s regional late-fall guidance, Darl Black says that near 50°F, baitfish and bass begin moving from the shallowest water toward deeper areas; below 50°F, bass concentrate around deeper structure. The article recommends slow retrieves close to the bottom in colder late-fall conditions and discusses deep crankbaits with suspend strips, swimbaits, casting jigs, and blade baits. Make the choice at the water
- Look for activity and likely depth. Surface feeding points toward a walking topwater; schooling or chasing baitfish makes a lipless crankbait or swimbait more relevant.
- Match the cover. Choose a topwater style for the surface conditions, use a spinnerbait to search shallow water, or work a jig around docks, wood, brush, grass, or other cover.
- Adjust as conditions cool. If shallow activity fades and fish appear deeper, slow down and consider a swimbait, jig, or other bottom-oriented presentation.
- Change one variable at a time. If fish are present but not responding, adjust depth, speed, or lure style rather than assuming one October pattern applies everywhere.
