A front-opening PVC or HDPE habitat is a practical option for many keepers; a glass enclosure can also work if its screen top is locked and the climate is monitored. The right choice depends on your snake’s size, room conditions and setup.
What should you prioritize when choosing an enclosure?
- Security: Doors, lids, vents and cable openings all need to resist escape.
- Usable space: Your snake should be able to stretch fully, with room for hides and a warm-to-cool gradient.
- Climate control: The enclosure must retain suitable heat and humidity while still providing adequate ventilation.
- Practical upkeep: Choose sturdy construction that is easy to clean and inspect.
ReptiFiles recommends front-opening enclosures, describing them as easier to access and more secure against escape than top-opening alternatives. PVC and HDPE are often opaque except at the front, which can also help provide a sheltered feel. These are useful selection criteria, not a guarantee that every enclosure of a particular material or style is secure.
What size enclosure does a ball python need?
Size recommendations vary between care sources, so use the dimensions as attributed guidance rather than a universal legal standard. The practical test is whether your individual snake can fully extend and still has usable space for hides, cover and a temperature gradient.

The two adult recommendations are expressed differently: ReptiFiles gives enclosure dimensions by life stage and length, while the RSPCA example matches a 120 cm snake to a vivarium at least 120 cm long. A young snake can be moved into larger housing as it grows, or housed in a larger enclosure with plenty of appropriately sized, confined spaces, according to the RSPCA.

PVC or HDPE versus glass: which suits your setup?

Choose based on the conditions you can reliably maintain in the room and the completed setup. A humidity-retentive enclosure is useful only if it also permits enough airflow.
How do you keep a ball python from escaping?
- Prefer a secure front-opening design where practical. Check that each door closes fully and cannot be pushed open.
- Inspect every possible exit. Examine joints, corners, ventilation holes and cable ports as well as the main door or lid. The care guidance establishes the need for a secure enclosure but does not set a standardized maximum gap measurement.
- Lock screen tops on glass habitats. Use reptile lid locks so the lid cannot be lifted. Do not use tape to hold it down: ReptiFiles warns that adhesive contact can injure a snake.
- Check furnishings for hazards. The RSPCA says the vivarium should be free of hazards that could cause injury.
How should ventilation, heating and humidity work together?
The RSPCA advises placing the heat source at one end so the other end remains cooler and the snake can thermoregulate. Its royal python guidance recommends a guarded heat lamp attached to a thermostat, a basking zone of 30–32°C and a cool end of 24–26°C, checked with thermometers. It gives 50–60% as normal humidity, with a rise to around 80% during misting. These are the RSPCA’s care-page recommendations, not measurements from a test of a particular enclosure.

Ventilation matters alongside humidity. The RSPCA says the vivarium should be well ventilated and advises increasing ventilation if excess humidity persists, to reduce the risk of bacteria and mould. Avoid treating a sealed enclosure as the goal: choose one that lets you maintain the needed humidity and temperature gradient with adequate airflow and safe heat placement.
Run the enclosure and check its temperatures and humidity before introducing the snake. The RSPCA advises setting up and running the vivarium for a week beforehand. Its page gives a 60–100 W heat lamp as an equipment example; actual safe output depends on installation, thermostat control and measured conditions, so that wattage is not a universal specification.

What hides and cover should the enclosure include?
The RSPCA calls for multiple hides at both ends, allowing the snake to choose a temperature without losing a sense of shelter. Its hide guidance describes suitable hides as durable, cleanable, opaque and stable, with an entrance and interior the animal can use comfortably. Leave enough room for hides and other cover without blocking access to either end of the temperature gradient.
For a glass enclosure, ReptiFiles suggests covering three of the four walls with opaque material to increase the snake’s sense of security. Keep the coverings clear of heat sources and vents so they do not interfere with safe heating or airflow.

Final pre-purchase and setup checks
- The enclosure length accommodates your snake’s full extension, with usable room for a gradient and furnishings.
- Doors or lids close securely, and vents, corners and cable openings do not create an escape route.
- A screen-top glass habitat has lid locks, not tape.
- The enclosure is sturdy, cleanable and free from hazardous edges or furnishings.
- After setup, thermometers and a hygrometer let you check conditions at both ends and adjust heating and ventilation as needed.
