Pythons are nonvenomous, but a large one can still bite, constrict, seriously injure a person, or prey on a pet. Fatal attacks on people are very rare in the evidence available, while the risk to cats and dogs is real where large pythons live. Keep your distance from an unfamiliar snake, keep pets close in python habitat, and contact local wildlife responders rather than trying to handle it.
How dangerous are pythons to people?
“Python” refers to multiple species, so the risk depends on the animal’s size and species, whether it is captive or wild, and what is happening during the encounter. A large python can inflict severe injuries with its teeth or by constricting. Nonvenomous does not mean harmless.
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) says nonvenomous snake fatalities are very rare, probably averaging one or two worldwide per year; that estimate is for all nonvenomous snakes, not pythons alone. USGS also says all known U.S. fatalities caused by constrictor snakes involved captive animals. It reports no human deaths from wild-living Burmese pythons in Florida in the evidence covered by its FAQ, and describes attacks as improbable. These are geographically and contextually limited findings, not a worldwide risk estimate for every python species. USGS guidance on Burmese pythons and people.
A 2014 study by Robert Reed and Skip Snow found no known python strikes directed at visitors to Everglades National Park during the period studied, when visitation averaged over one million people a year. The authors judged the relative risk of a person being killed by a python in the park to be extremely low, while cautioning that it should not be dismissed entirely. This is a historic, site-specific assessment, not a current global incident rate. Reed and Snow’s USGS-hosted study.

For Burmese pythons, the Florida Museum says small individuals are not generally dangerous to people or pets, but larger snakes have sharp teeth capable of causing severe lacerations. It reports that virtually all bites occur when the snake is intentionally bothered; that is guidance about the pattern, not a guarantee that a bite cannot happen otherwise. Can a python eat a cat or dog?
Yes, a large python can prey on pets. Florida wildlife authorities and the Florida Museum identify cats and dogs as potential prey of Burmese pythons; Queensland Government guidance also lists pets, poultry, and small livestock as possible prey. This establishes a genuine risk where sizable pythons occur, but it does not mean every python can take every pet or tell you how often attacks happen. In places where pythons are present, supervise pets outdoors, keep dogs close, and do not let cats or small animals roam near a reported snake. Singapore’s Animal and Veterinary Service advises keeping pets on a tight leash during snake encounters. These are precautionary measures, not a quantified guarantee of protection. Why the species and location matter
Risk descriptions for one species or region should not be applied everywhere. Florida’s guidance largely concerns invasive Burmese pythons. In Singapore, the National Parks Board describes reticulated pythons as nonvenomous and generally posing little threat to people, particularly when left undisturbed. It says large individuals can reach 5–7 m, while most in Singapore tend to be smaller. Those size and risk observations are specific to that species and local context; the page was last updated 3 June 2026. Singapore National Parks Board reticulated python profile.

- Species and size: A small snake and a large constrictor do not present the same physical risk.
- Captive or wild: USGS’s known U.S. constrictor fatalities involved captive snakes; its report about no human deaths from wild Burmese pythons applies to Florida.
- Interaction: Handling, cornering, or bothering a snake increases exposure to defensive bites. Avoid contact.
- Local setting: Wildlife species and response rules differ among places. Local agencies are the right source for current advice.
- People and pets: Rare human fatalities do not eliminate the documented predation risk to pets from large Burmese pythons.
What to do if you see a python
- Move people and pets away. Give the snake space and do not touch, corner, feed, or approach it for a closer look.
- Do not try to catch or identify it at close range. USGS advises avoiding interaction with large constrictors. Queensland Government says not to handle a Burmese python unless trained; containment steps should be taken only if safe.
- Contact the appropriate local wildlife authority or trained responder. Singapore’s AVS directs people to contact trained responders for snakes that are injured, distressed, or trapped. If the snake presents an immediate danger, follow local emergency guidance.
- Use local reporting instructions. In Florida, FWC directs residents to report suspected Burmese pythons through its listed hotline, app, or website. Reporting routes and rules vary by location, so use the current directions from your local agency. FWC Burmese python reporting and information.
USGS puts the central safety advice plainly: “The simplest and most sure-fire way to reduce the risk of human fatalities is to avoid interacting with a large constrictor.”
