A newborn rabbit needs urgent veterinary attention if it feels cold, has a swollen belly or diarrhea, is unusually weak or lethargic, will not or cannot feed, struggles to breathe, collapses, has a wound or bleeding, or has fly larvae on its body. Call a rabbit-experienced veterinarian or an emergency clinic as soon as you notice one of these signs.
Which signs mean a newborn rabbit needs urgent care?
Newborn rabbits can become seriously ill quickly. House Rabbit Society’s baby-rabbit guidance recommends urgent care from a rabbit-savvy veterinarian for these warning signs:
- A cold body
- A bloated or swollen belly
- Diarrhea
- Marked weakness, lethargy, or weak responses
- Refusing or appearing unable to feed
- Difficulty breathing, mouth breathing, wheezing, or nasal discharge
- Collapse or fitting
- Bleeding or other wounds
- Fly larvae on the rabbit
- Reduced or absent droppings
Rabbit Welfare Association & Fund’s emergency guidance also flags collapse, mouth breathing, fitting, bleeding, diarrhea, and reduced or absent droppings. Scottish pet-rabbit welfare guidance says that failure to eat or pass faeces warrants immediate veterinary attention. Do not wait for a routine appointment if any of these signs appear.
What to do when you see a warning sign
- Call a rabbit-experienced veterinarian or emergency clinic promptly. Say clearly that the rabbit is a newborn and describe the sign you noticed.
- Give the clinic the timing and changes you have observed. Explain when the symptom began, whether the rabbit is feeding, and whether you have seen droppings.
- Follow the clinic’s instructions while arranging assessment. The cited guidance does not establish a universal home-care protocol for domestic newborn rabbits. Do not force-feed, give medication, take a rectal temperature, or apply heat unless a veterinarian gives case-specific instructions.
Weakness or dehydration concerns
A sunken-looking tummy, wrinkled skin, or weak responses are concerning observations described in House Rabbit Society’s baby-bunny guidance. They are not a definitive home diagnosis. If you notice them, contact a veterinarian promptly rather than trying to confirm dehydration yourself.

Do not confuse domestic newborn care with wildlife triage
Tufts’ advice to keep a sick or injured wild baby rabbit warm, dark, and quiet if transport is delayed—and not to give it food or water—is specifically for found wild rabbits. It is not a care plan for a domestic newborn. Likewise, general rabbit temperature guidance is not a newborn-specific threshold. Ask a veterinarian what to do for the rabbit in front of you.
