If your cat bites your hands or pounces on your feet during play, it may be directing normal hunting-style play at the wrong target. Redirect the chase to a moving toy, stop interacting when your cat goes for your body, and offer regular chances to play and scratch appropriately. If the behavior is sudden, severe, or linked to pain, contact a veterinarian.
Why does my cat bite or scratch me when we play?
Cats play by stalking, chasing, pouncing, grabbing, swatting, and biting. When those actions are aimed at a person, the play can become painful. This is especially common in kittens and young cats, but adults can do it too.
Some cats learn to moderate their bites and claws through play with littermates. Cats raised without littermates or with few opportunities to play may have had less chance to learn that control. Long stretches alone and people encouraging a cat to attack hands or feet can also contribute. These are possible influences, not a diagnosis of any individual cat.
Attacks may follow a pattern: a cat hides, waits for moving feet, then ambushes them. Keep a brief note of when and where it happens. If you spot a reliable time or launch point, arrange a toy session before the usual ambush and, where practical, limit access to the hiding spot.

How can I tell when play is getting too rough?
Watch for changes in your cat’s body language, such as a rapidly thrashing tail, ears turning back or flattening, or enlarged pupils. Stalking and waiting in ambush can also come before a pounce. These are clues that arousal may be rising, not a checklist that predicts every bite; cats vary in how they signal.
Pause or end the interaction when you see these signs, before your cat makes contact. A moving toy gives your cat a suitable target to chase and pounce on. VCA’s veterinary behavior guidance describes moving objects that can be stalked, chased, swatted, or pounced on as particularly engaging for cat play: Play and Predatory Aggression in Cats.

How do I redirect biting and scratching during play?
Use a toy, not your hands or feet
Try a wand or dangling toy, or throw or roll a toy your cat enjoys. Keep the moving target well away from your hands, and switch toys if your cat loses interest. Check that playthings are safe and not small enough to swallow. Supervised interactive play and toys a cat can use independently offer different outlets; choose them to suit your cat.
Let people start play and end it calmly
Initiate play sessions rather than letting an attack on a hand or foot start the game. If your cat goes for your body, disengage and end the interaction. Do not wrestle with your cat using hands or feet, hit, physically punish, or try to handle a cat that is highly aroused. Punishment can create fear or be mistaken for more play. Toy redirection, planning ahead, and calmly ending the interaction are clearer first steps than relying on startling devices.

How do I redirect scratching?
Scratching is normal feline behavior; the goal is to provide a more suitable surface, not to eliminate the behavior. Notice what your cat scratches and how: carpet, fabric, wood, and rope-like materials feel different, and some cats prefer scratching vertically while others prefer a horizontal surface.

Choose a stable scratcher with a texture and orientation that match your cat’s preference, then place it near the spot your cat already targets. A tall, sturdy post may suit a cat that scratches upright; a horizontal cardboard scratcher may suit one that scratches flat surfaces. Cornell’s guidance explains how to match scratchers to a cat’s preferred surface and orientation: Feline Behavior Problems: Destructive Behavior.

Play-related attacks often involve stalking and pouncing. Fear-related behavior may look different: a crouched posture, flattened ears, a tucked tail, hissing, or growling. A cat aroused by something it cannot reach may also redirect aggression toward a nearby person. Pain or another medical condition can cause aggressive responses, too.
