Choose a veterinarian whose services fit your pet’s needs, whose clinic you can reach when care is needed, and whose team explains options clearly. Compare a few local practices, ask the same practical questions, and make a separate plan for emergencies before you settle on a regular clinic.

Start with your pet’s needs and your access to care

The right choice is a match, not a single credential or online rating. Consider your pet’s current health, age, temperament, and any ongoing care, then check whether a practice provides those services or can coordinate a referral. Also weigh location, transportation, appointment availability, hours, and how easy it is to get answers after a visit. The AVMA’s choosing-a-veterinarian guidance recommends finding a veterinarian who can meet your pet’s medical needs and with whom you feel comfortable building a long-term relationship.

  • Clinical fit: Does the clinic routinely provide the care your pet needs? If not, how does it refer to or work with specialists?
  • Access: Is the location workable, and can the clinic offer appointments when you are likely to need them?
  • Communication and handling: Do staff listen, explain choices in understandable terms, and have ways to make visits less stressful for a fearful dog or cat?
  • Cost and logistics: Can the clinic provide estimates, explain payment options, and transfer records if you later change practices?

Recommendations from people you trust can help you make a shortlist. Online reviews may flag recurring service concerns, but neither reviews nor a personal recommendation establish clinical competence on their own.

Call two or three clinics with the same questions

A short call can reveal whether a practice is a practical fit before you book. Ask:

  • Are you accepting new patients, and can I request a particular veterinarian?
  • What are your routine appointment hours, and how soon can a new patient usually be seen?
  • What services are available in-house, and how do you handle specialist referrals?
  • How can I ask follow-up questions after an appointment, and how are test results communicated?
  • How do you reduce stress for fearful pets, including cats?
  • Can you provide estimates for common services and explain accepted payment methods?
  • How do you handle insurance claims, if applicable, and how can I get my pet’s records if I change clinics?
  • Are you accredited by the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA), and where can I verify that?

Listen for whether staff answer directly, make space for your questions, and explain how the clinic’s process works. For decisions about care, useful discussion includes the options, their likely benefits and risks, possible outcomes, costs, and support your pet may need. AAHA’s communication guidance discusses these elements in oncology care; they are useful topics to raise, not a promise that every introductory visit will cover them in depth.

Make an emergency plan separately

A regular clinic may not offer urgent appointments or after-hours care. Ask what to do if your pet becomes ill outside normal hours, whether the practice handles urgent cases, and which emergency hospital it recommends. Confirm how records are shared with that hospital. Save its phone number and address, and plan the route before you need urgent care. AAHA’s VCPR guidance describes continuity as including a veterinarian’s availability for ongoing care or arrangements for emergency coverage.

Use accreditation as one signal, not a guarantee

AAHA accreditation is voluntary and evaluates a practice against standards. In owner guidance published in 2025, AAHA described its framework as having “nearly 50 mandatory standards and almost 900 total standards,” covering areas such as pain management, client services, surgery, and emergency care. Those figures describe the accreditation framework; they do not rank every practice or guarantee a particular treatment outcome. If a clinic says it is accredited, check its current status in the AAHA hospital directory. You can also verify a veterinarian’s license with the relevant local regulator.

Compare costs and practical details before committing

Ask for written estimates when possible, and clarify what is included and what could add to the total. Ask which payment methods are accepted, whether the clinic submits insurance claims or provides records for you to submit, and whether any assistance is available. Fees and arrangements vary by clinic, so confirm them directly rather than relying on a general estimate online.

If a referral is recommended, ask what the specialist will handle, how the regular veterinarian will stay involved, and how transportation or other practical constraints affect the plan.

Choose a first visit that lets you assess the fit

After comparing clinics by phone, book with the one that best balances your pet’s needs, access, communication, and costs. Use the appointment to see whether the team listens and explains recommendations in a way you understand. For a nervous cat, ask in advance about reducing waiting-room stress and plan transport with a secure carrier; AAHA’s owner guidance on choosing a veterinarian recommends considering how you and your pet will enter and wait at the clinic.
