Can Heavy Metals in Cat Food Harm Cats? Signs and What to Do

Heavy metals can be toxic to cats at high exposures, but symptoms are nonspecific and trace detection alone does not prove a food is harmful. Learn what signs warrant a vet visit and what steps to take.

Yes. Heavy metals can harm cats at sufficiently high exposures, but finding a trace amount in food does not, by itself, show that the food is dangerous or caused an illness. The risk depends on the metal and its chemical form, the amount and duration of exposure, and the cat. Signs can include digestive illness, appetite loss, weakness, or neurological changes, but none is specific enough to diagnose poisoning at home. If your cat is sick or you suspect an exposure, contact a veterinarian promptly.

What signs of heavy metal poisoning should owners watch for?

Possible signs vary by metal, chemical form, dose, and length of exposure. They overlap with many other illnesses, so symptoms cannot identify the metal or establish that cat food is the cause.

Lead

Lead poisoning may cause loss of appetite, behavior changes, poor coordination, tremors, or seizures. Longer-term exposure can also involve vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, lethargy, weight loss, anemia, and intermittent seizures. The signs depend on dose, route, and duration; diagnosis requires veterinary assessment and appropriate testing. Merck Veterinary Manual: Lead Poisoning in Animals.

Inorganic arsenic

Acute inorganic arsenic poisoning can cause large amounts of watery, sometimes bloody diarrhea, abdominal pain, dehydration, weakness, depression, a weak pulse, and circulatory collapse. Cats may be more sensitive than other animals. These are signs described in toxicology references, not a prediction that ordinary commercial cat-food exposure will produce them. Ultimate Pet Sensitivity Test for Dogs & Cats - 1,100+ Items - Hair Sample
  • Broad 1,100+ Item Screening: When you are unsure which everyday exposures deserve a closer look, this food intolerance test kit for dogs and cats screens more than 1,100 food and non-food items, including meats, grains, dairy, additives, environmental factors, nutritional compounds, metals and minerals.
  • Know What the Test Measures: Bioresonance analysis reports potential sensitivity or reactivity patterns from the hair sample. It is not an allergy test, does not measure antibodies, and is not a veterinary diagnostic test. Do not make changes to your pet’s diet based on this report alone. Consult your veterinarian about symptoms, known allergies, or significant dietary changes.
  • Simple At-Home Hair Collection: Activate the code inside the kit, then collect 10 hair strands if longer than 1 inch or 10-15 strands if shorter. Cut close to the root, place the sample in the specimen wallet and use the included prepaid return envelope. One kit is for one pet and one report.
  • Fast U.S. Lab Results: Return-mail times vary depending on your location. Once your sample arrives at our U.S. testing facility, your results will be processed and sent within 3-5 business days. You’ll receive both a PDF of your results by email and an SMS confirmation when they’ve been sent. Haven’t seen them? Check your spam, junk or promotions folder. If they’re still missing, contact our Monday-Friday support team for help.
  • Practical Report & Vet Support: The color-coded report groups items into high, moderate, and no reactivity levels. You’ll also receive a Results Guide, Elimination Guide, Re-introduction diary, with a complimentary 30-day access to veterinary advice. This service does not replace your regular veterinarian.

Mercury

The form of mercury matters. Inorganic mercury can cause loss of appetite, inflammation of the mouth or throat, vomiting, diarrhea, pain, dehydration, and shock. Organic mercury can cause delayed neurological signs, including blindness, poor coordination, tremors, unusual behavior, or seizures. Merck Veterinary Manual: Mercury Poisoning in Animals.

Does detecting a metal mean cat food is unsafe?

No. FDA notes that arsenic, cadmium, mercury, lead, and other metals can occur in animal foods, and that high levels can be toxic. These elements also occur in the environment, including air, water, and soil, so the relevant question is not simply whether a metal can be detected. Its form, concentration, exposure over time, and the animal’s circumstances matter. FDA: Heavy Metal Contamination in Pet Food.

FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine reported results from 318 animal-food samples collected from January 2015 through December 2017; 50 were pet and laboratory animal foods. In those 50 samples, reported detected ranges were 0–2.58 ppm arsenic, 0–0.22 ppm cadmium, 0–0.13 ppm mercury, and 0–0.90 ppm lead. The samples were not limited to cat food, and these ranges do not estimate what share of all cat foods contained metals or establish whether a current product is safe or unsafe. The report was published in 2019, so it is historical surveillance rather than a current-market survey. FDA CVM, CVM CY15–17 Report on Heavy Metals in Animal Food (2019).

The report said most sampled animal foods were below the maximum tolerable levels it compared against. Some ingredients or mineral premixes exceeded those levels; FDA said typical inclusion rates were expected to yield acceptable levels in the final feed. Its discussion of guidance, action levels, and tolerances describes the agency’s regulatory position in that 2019 report and should not be read as a statement about later policy. An earlier FDA review of 58 pet-food samples, published in 2011, found no indication of long-term safety concern for most measured metals in those tested products; it noted a mercury result that might raise concern if the product were intended for reproducing cats. Neither report guarantees that every product on sale today is safe. FDA: Questions and Answers on Pet Food Contamination.

What should you do if your cat is sick or you suspect exposure?

  1. Contact a veterinarian promptly if your cat is ill. Describe the symptoms, when they began, what the cat has eaten, and any possible non-food exposures. AAFCO advises seeking veterinary care before doing anything else for a sick pet. A cat becoming ill after eating a particular food does not, by timing alone, prove the food caused it. AAFCO: If Your Pet Is Sick.
  2. Share product details. Give the veterinarian the food’s name and, if available, its lot code and best-by date. Photograph the package; keep remaining food in its packaging if the veterinarian or authorities may need it.
  3. Do not attempt home treatment. Do not try to detoxify your cat or give chelators or supplements unless a veterinarian directs you to. Diagnosis and treatment depend on the suspected metal and the cat’s clinical findings.
  4. Report a suspected food-related illness after arranging veterinary care. AAFCO advises reporting concerns to the manufacturer and appropriate state and federal authorities. Check current FDA advisories for product-specific or lot-specific notices rather than relying on historical sampling figures.

How is heavy metal poisoning diagnosed?

A veterinarian considers the exposure history, the cat’s signs, and appropriate diagnostic tests. Confirming lead or arsenic poisoning requires more than matching symptoms to a list; testing may include analysis of blood or tissue and interpretation alongside clinical findings. Whether food testing is useful depends on the suspected exposure and the veterinarian’s assessment. Historical FDA sample ranges are not a consumer brand-ranking tool, and the available evidence does not support a home test or universal testing recommendation.
