Senior dogs need different care because aging can change their health risks, comfort, mobility, nutrition, and behavior—and those changes vary from dog to dog. The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) says “old age is not a disease”: a new or worsening problem deserves attention, not dismissal as an inevitable part of getting older. A useful senior-care plan is tailored to the individual dog and may include veterinary assessment, nutrition and weight monitoring, dental care, pain management, behavior support, and practical adjustments at home.

When is a dog considered a senior?

There is no single birthday that makes every dog a senior. The 2019 AAHA Canine Life Stage Guidelines define the senior stage as the last 25% of a dog’s estimated lifespan, continuing through the end of life. Because expected lifespan varies, senior status is relative rather than a fixed age cutoff. AAHA’s senior-patient definition and its 2019 canine life-stage guidelines explain this approach.

Why does aging call for a different care plan?

As dogs age, more than one aspect of health may need attention at the same time. Changes in movement, appetite, weight, sleep, elimination, or social behavior can affect comfort and daily function, and the visible sign may have more than one possible cause. AAHA describes senior care as a plan tailored to the aging animal’s needs, taking account of quality of life and caregiver considerations as well as health conditions.

That plan may bring together preventive care, diagnostic assessment, treatment, pain management, nutrition, dentistry, behavior support, attention to other diseases, and changes to the home environment. The particular checks and their timing depend on the dog’s history, examination, risks, and veterinarian’s judgment—not on a universal senior-dog checklist. See AAHA’s introduction to the 2023 Senior Care Guidelines.

What should you pay attention to as your dog gets older?

Veterinary assessment and changing signs

Bring new, persistent, or worsening changes to your veterinarian, especially if they affect comfort or normal activities. A change should be assessed rather than assumed to be “just old age”; an exam and any appropriate diagnostics help the veterinary team decide what care fits your dog.

Weight, muscle, and nutrition

Track your dog’s weight and body and muscle condition over time. Older dogs’ energy and nutritional needs can change, but the right response depends on the dog’s condition, activity, and any diagnosed disease. AAHA notes that maintenance energy requirements generally decrease over a dog’s lifetime, but that does not mean every senior dog needs the same calorie reduction. The guidelines also state that there is no AAFCO nutrient profile specifically for senior nutrition, so a package’s “senior” label alone is not a reason to switch foods. Discuss a diet change with your veterinarian, using your dog’s weight trend, muscle condition, and medical needs to guide the decision. AAHA’s nutrition guidance covers these considerations.

Teeth and eating comfort

Oral disease can affect quality of life, and AAHA recommends an oral-cavity examination at each veterinary visit. Tell your veterinary team if eating becomes difficult or unusual; a short video of what you observe may help explain the change. Dental procedures and imaging should be planned with the veterinary team.

Pain and mobility

Chronic pain can be easy to miss, so notice changes in how readily your dog moves and performs familiar activities. AAHA recommends teaching caregivers to recognize and monitor pain and describes multimodal approaches to pain and mobility. Depending on the dog, a veterinarian may consider treatment alongside weight management, rehabilitation, physical modalities, or environmental changes. Do not give human pain medicine or treat a supplement as proven therapy without veterinary guidance.

Behavior and cognitive changes

Changes in orientation, social interaction, sleep-wake patterns, house training, activity, or anxiety can be signs worth discussing with a veterinarian. They may be associated with cognitive changes, but pain or another concurrent condition can also affect behavior. Note what has changed and when it happens rather than trying to diagnose the cause at home.

Home access and safety

Adjustments can help when a particular part of the home makes movement difficult. A properly selected ramp may help with steps or vehicle access; traction mats or runners may be useful on slippery floors. These are optional examples of environmental adaptation, not universal requirements or AAHA product endorsements. Choose an aid according to your dog’s size, confidence, mobility, and your home’s layout. If movement seems painful or unstable, ask a veterinarian or rehabilitation professional whether an underlying problem needs attention.
