What to Do When an Off-Leash Dog Runs Up to Your Dog

If an off-leash dog approaches your dog, prioritize a calm exit, keep your dog close, and use interruptions or barriers only when they help you get to safety.

If an off-leash dog is heading toward your dog, make space and look for a safe way out. If you see it early, calmly change direction; if it gets close, keep your dog near you and use your position, a brief cue, or another safe interruption to prevent a greeting. No tactic guarantees safety, and you cannot reliably know an unfamiliar dog’s intent from one signal.

What to do as the dog approaches

  1. Look for an exit. Scan for an open path, barrier, doorway, vehicle, or nearby person who can help. Seeing the dog early gives you more time to move away.
  2. Calmly create distance. If there is room, turn and walk another way with your dog. Keep track of the loose dog as you leave, and do not let the dogs greet just because the approaching dog appears friendly. A leash can limit your dog’s ability to move away from an encounter.
  3. Keep your dog close. Ask your dog to stay if they know the cue. If appropriate and safe, position yourself between the dogs while moving toward an exit or barrier. Getting between dogs can put you at risk, so do not do it if it would leave you exposed.
  4. Try a brief interruption. A firm “Go Home!” or “Sit,” a stop-hand gesture paired with a body block, or tossing treats away from you may redirect some dogs long enough for you to leave. These options are not guaranteed. Treats are not suitable if reaching for them or throwing them would make the situation less safe.
  5. Call for help. Call to the owner or ask a nearby person to help you get to safety. Keep your attention on the dogs and your exit.

Do not run or scream. General bite-prevention guidance from the ASPCA says to stay quiet and still when an unknown dog approaches a person; the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) advises staying calm and slowly backing away if threatened. In a dog-to-dog encounter, that does not mean you must remain still while a loose dog continues approaching: when you have room, move calmly toward a safer exit.

Should you pick up a small dog?

Only lift or move your dog to a safe elevated place if you can do it without increasing danger to yourself or your dog. Reaching down or holding a dog while another dog is close may put you at risk. If lifting is not clearly safe, focus on creating distance or getting behind a barrier instead.

How to judge the approaching dog

Do not rely on a wagging tail or a single body-language sign to decide that a dog is friendly. A loose, bouncy body and relaxed face may seem less concerning, but they are not permission to allow an encounter. Signs that may be more concerning include a fixed stare, closed mouth, forward ears, stiff posture, a high, tight tail, or stalking movement. The ASPCA also describes possible aggression signs such as a stiff stance, direct stare, growling, lunging, or barking. Fear signs can include crouching, a tucked tail, flattened ears, lip licking, looking away, or trying to move away. Dogs can show mixed signals; prioritize space over diagnosing intent.

  • Versatile for Any Activity: Park walks, trail hikes, or yard training. Offers ideal balance of freedom and control. Comes in 4ft, 5ft, 6ft lengths and 12 colors. 3/8" diameter suits small to medium dogs – lightweight and non-bulky. For medium and large dogs, choose 1/2" diameter

Using deterrents: a last resort, not a guarantee

An opening umbrella or citronella or compressed-air product may interrupt some approaches, but startling a dog can also stress your own dog. One trainer-authored practical guide advises against pepper spray because of blowback and possible escalation; this is not a universal veterinary protocol. Treat any deterrent as a last resort, and use it only if doing so gives you a safer chance to leave rather than drawing you closer to the loose dog.

If your dog is reactive or fearful

Avoiding close encounters is useful management, not a cure. Cornell’s veterinary-college guidance notes that leash reactivity can occur even when a dog is comfortable off leash, and may include barking, lunging, or growling. Reactive behavior alone does not establish that a dog is aggressive.

After a bite or scuffle

Seek veterinary advice if your dog is injured or shows concerning behavior after an incident. The AVMA recommends talking with a veterinarian about behavior after a bite incident. Reporting requirements, quarantine rules, and bite procedures vary by jurisdiction, so contact local animal control or public-health authorities for the rules where you live.
