Before taking your dog to a park or other public space, check that destination’s current rules for dogs, allowed areas, leash requirements, and waste disposal. There is no single rule for every U.S. park, trail, beach, or venue. Once dogs are permitted, keep yours controlled, collect its waste, and give people and wildlife room.
Where can you go in a park with your dog?
It depends on the specific park and facility. The National Park Service says many national parks allow pet dogs only in designated areas and recommends checking the rules for the park you plan to visit. A park may allow dogs outdoors but exclude ordinary pets from indoor spaces. Start with the official page for the destination, then check posted signs when you arrive.
Before setting out, verify:
- Whether dogs are allowed at all and which areas, trails, beaches, or facilities are open to them.
- Leash requirements, including any maximum length or rules for designated off-leash areas.
- Restrictions that vary by trail, season, or other local conditions.
- How to dispose of dog waste and whether bins are available.
For one location-specific example, Fort Washington Park’s NPS guidance requires dogs to be leashed and sets a six-foot maximum under federal regulations. That is the rule described for that park—not a universal leash limit. Bring a leash that meets the destination’s own requirements.
What should you do before bringing your dog?
Check the rules and prepare
Read the destination’s current official guidance before travel and follow any additional on-site signs. Pack waste bags and plan to carry used bags until you can put them in a trash can or pack them out. A first-aid kit is also part of the CDC’s general outdoor preparation guidance.

Keep your dog leashed, supervised, and under control
Use the required leash and designated routes, and keep your dog close enough to prevent it from approaching other visitors or chasing wildlife. NPS explains that leashes can reduce conflicts and protect plants and wildlife. CDC advises keeping pets leashed in unfenced areas, supervising them outdoors, and preventing contact with wildlife. As the NPS puts it, “You are a guest in the home of park wildlife.”
Handle greetings carefully
Ask an owner before petting their dog, and do not approach an unfamiliar dog. Give other visitors space, especially when their dog is passing, resting, or being managed on a leash.

Pick up waste
Bag your dog’s waste and put it in a trash can; if there is no bin nearby, carry it out. Dog feces can contain germs harmful to people and animals, according to the CDC, so leaving waste behind is both unpleasant and a health concern.

No. Under U.S. ADA guidance, a service animal is a dog individually trained to do work or perform tasks directly related to a person’s disability. A dog whose presence provides comfort alone is not an ADA service animal. NPS likewise distinguishes trained service dogs from emotional-support, therapy, comfort, and companion animals, which do not qualify under its service-animal policy simply because they provide companionship or comfort.

Covered businesses and state or local government entities generally must allow service animals in areas where members of the public may go, subject to limited exceptions. When it is not apparent that a dog is a service animal, staff may ask whether the dog is required because of a disability and what work or task it has been trained to perform. They may not demand certification or ask about the nature of the person’s disability. A dog may be excluded if it is not housebroken or is out of control and its handler does not take effective action to control it.
This is a summary of U.S. ADA guidance, not a rule for every country or every setting. Check the relevant destination’s official policy and applicable law for the specific situation.
