In June 2012, Water Police divers freed Gizmo, a young dolphin calf whose dorsal fin was being cut by fishing line. His mother, Tupac, stayed close during the rescue; after the line and rope were removed, Gizmo was returned to her care.
How Gizmo was found entangled
A member of the public sent a photograph of an entangled calf to wildlife officers in April 2012. They first thought the material might be seaweed, but identified fishing line cutting into the calf’s dorsal fin. Murdoch University researchers identified him as Gizmo. Over the following two months, agencies and volunteers monitored Gizmo and Tupac while planning a rescue.
By the time of the successful attempt, Gizmo was dragging fishing line and rope, with seaweed and other debris caught in it. The entanglement was a threat to his fin, and his mother’s close presence made it difficult for rescuers to get near him.
Why Tupac made the rescue difficult
Tupac was highly protective of her calf and thwarted several earlier attempts to approach him. During the eventual rescue, she tried three times to pull Gizmo away by his tail. She later calmed, allowing the divers to finish freeing him without separating him from her care.

What followed: a historical fishing-line disposal pilot
The Swan River Trust’s 2013–14 Dolphin Watch report linked Gizmo’s entanglement to a prevention effort. The Trust joined Recfishwest, Native Animal Rescue, Keep Australia Beautiful’s Clean Marine campaign, and seven riverfront councils to install fishing-line disposal units at popular recreational fishing locations.
The report records 22 units installed during the pilot at sites including jetties, fishing platforms, bridges, yacht clubs, and boat ramps on the Swan and Canning rivers. That is the pilot’s reported count for 2013–14, not a current inventory; the report does not establish how many units remain available or operational today.
