A full-grown tuna can be anywhere from a few feet long to an exceptional 13 feet, depending on the species. Atlantic bluefin is the largest tuna in NOAA Fisheries’ account, with a stated maximum of 13 feet and 2,000 pounds. That is a maximum, not the size of an average adult tuna.
How large is the biggest tuna?
NOAA Fisheries says Atlantic bluefin tuna can reach 13 feet and 2,000 pounds. The NOAA Western Atlantic guide lists a maximum length of over 118 inches, measured as fork length—the distance from the snout to the fork in the tail. These are maximum figures, not typical adult measurements. NOAA Fisheries’ Atlantic bluefin profile and its Western Atlantic tuna identification guide provide the figures.
How big are adult tuna by species?
Size varies substantially among tuna species. The figures below come from sources with different geographic coverage and measurement conventions, so use them as orientation rather than a single standardized ranking of adult sizes.
| Species and source scope | Typical or adult size stated | Maximum stated |
|---|---|---|
| Atlantic bluefin | Common length 16–79 inches in NOAA’s Western Atlantic guide; fork length | Up to 13 feet and 2,000 pounds in NOAA’s profile; over 118 inches maximum fork length in the guide |
| Pacific bluefin | Adults about 1.5 m (4 feet 11 inches) and 60 kg (130 pounds) | 3 m (9.8 feet) and 450 kg (990 pounds) |
| Atlantic bigeye | Common length 16–67 inches in NOAA’s Western Atlantic guide; fork length | About 5.5 feet in NOAA’s profile; 90 inches maximum fork length in the guide |
| Pacific bigeye | Not stated by NOAA’s cited profile | About 6.5 feet |
| Yellowfin, western Atlantic guide | Common length 16–67 inches; fork length | 80 inches maximum fork length |
| Albacore | Common length 100 cm fork length, according to FishBase | 140 cm fork length and 60.3 kg maximum published weight, according to FishBase |
NOAA’s Pacific bluefin management page gives the adult and maximum figures for that species. Its regional bigeye profiles give the Atlantic and Pacific maximum lengths. The Western Atlantic guide provides common and maximum fork lengths for bluefin, bigeye, and yellowfin. Pacific bluefin, Atlantic bigeye, Pacific bigeye, and the FishBase albacore summary provide further species details.

Why do tuna size figures differ?
Adult size and maximum size are different
A species’ maximum is an upper-end reported measurement, not a description of what most adults weigh or measure. NOAA distinguishes common length from maximum length in its Western Atlantic guide; for Pacific bluefin, it separately describes approximate adult size and maximum reported size.
Length measurements may use different endpoints
Fork length ends at the fork in the tail. Other sources may use a different length basis, and figures should not be compared as if all measurements were taken the same way. NOAA labels the comparative lengths in its Western Atlantic tuna guide as fork length.

Sources can report different maximums
NOAA’s Atlantic bluefin profile gives up to 13 feet and 2,000 pounds. FishBase’s 2016 Atlantic bluefin summary lists a maximum length of 458 cm and maximum published weight of 684 kg. These are different published figures; treat them as source-specific rather than combining them into one definitive record. FishBase’s Atlantic bluefin summary is dated 2016.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What size should you picture?
If you mean the largest tuna species, picture an Atlantic bluefin that can reach 13 feet and 2,000 pounds. For a more typical adult-size reference, NOAA describes Pacific bluefin adults as about 4 feet 11 inches and 130 pounds. Bigeye, yellowfin, and albacore have their own size ranges, and a number only makes sense when paired with the species, source, and measurement basis.
