There is no single growth rate for fish. How long a fish takes to grow depends on its species, life stage, environment, food, and the size or maturity you mean by “grown.” Farmed channel catfish, farmed rainbow trout, and wild Atlantic salmon follow very different timelines; none is a reliable stand-in for a pet fish.
How long does it take a fish to grow?
Start with the species and endpoint. “Grown” might mean reaching a particular length, gaining market weight, or reaching reproductive maturity—and those are not interchangeable. The examples below come from distinct farming and wild-life-cycle contexts, so they illustrate variation rather than rank species or predict aquarium growth.
| Fish and setting | Starting point and endpoint | Reported timeline |
|---|---|---|
| Channel catfish, farmed in a University of Florida IFAS example | Egg to food-size fish | Estimated 15–18 months. The publication does not specify a single food-size weight for this estimate. University of Florida IFAS Extension |
| Channel catfish, northern Florida | 10–20 cm fingerling to about 453 g (1 lb) | Estimated 7–9 months. University of Florida IFAS Extension |
| Rainbow trout, aquaculture | Market size of 30–40 cm in the described production cycle | Usually within nine months; some fish are grown larger over more than 20 months. FAO |
| Atlantic salmon, wild | Adults after two years at sea | Average 28–30 inches (about 71–76 cm) and 8–12 lb (about 3.6–5.4 kg). NOAA Fisheries |
The sources do not establish a representative average for “fish” as a whole. For a pet fish, look for information about its exact species and life stage, and check what the stated timeline measures.
What affects a fish’s growth rate?
Species, life stage, and maturity
Species differ in their growth patterns, and the same species can grow at different rates at different ages. In many fish, growth rises toward a maximum and then slows around maturity. A single simple formula may not describe an individual species well over its entire life, particularly when food availability or reproductive demands change. FAO’s overview of fish growth explains why growth curves vary.

Temperature
Fish have species-specific temperature ranges for growth. Water that is too warm or too cold can slow or stop growth; the optimum is not the same for all fish. For rainbow trout, FAO gives a culture optimum below 21 °C and notes that growth occurs in a narrower range than the species’ full temperature tolerance. The FAO trout profile also describes different potential size outcomes for anadromous and freshwater strains.
Food and feeding
Food availability and diet quality affect growth, while the appropriate feeding level depends on factors such as species, fish size, temperature, and water conditions. The channel-catfish guidance from University of Florida IFAS Extension varies feeding recommendations with fish size and conditions; it should not be treated as a universal ration for aquarium fish. More food does not automatically mean faster or healthier growth.

- Compact: Dimension: 7.9"x5.9"x5.9"; 1 Gallon tank; ideal for small spaces, aquarium beginners caring for a single betta, a few shrimp, snails, or a tiny goldfish. Also works as a temporary hospital tank, quarantine tank, or desktop decor (After deducting the filter part, the actual usable volume is approximately 0.8 gal and it will further decrease after adding substrate)
- Customizable Lighting: features a 3-color LED hood with 10 adjustable brightness levels to showcase your fish and tank décor
- Self-Cleaning Filtration: Hidden filter keeps tank clean for easier maintenance. Note: Clean filter sponge and pump regularly to avoid clogging; regular water changes are required — this small tank does not support zero-maintenance use
- Thoughtful Design: its top feeding hole allows for easy feeding without removing the lid; four silicone feet for stability and quiet operation
- Complete Starter Kit: 1x 1 gallon Fish Tank, 1x Filter Sponge, 1x Adjustable Water Pump, 1x LED Hood (Note: The light requires a power transformer (not included) for use. Compatible transformers include 5V 0.5A, 5V 1A, 5V 1.5A, and 5V 2A)
Water quality, density, and health
Water-quality needs differ among species. Poor conditions, stress, or health problems can interfere with growth, while the number of fish sharing an environment can affect the conditions and resources available to each. For wild Atlantic salmon, NOAA also identifies season, habitat quality, age, sex, and population density as influences; salmon grow much faster in saltwater than in freshwater. NOAA Fisheries describes their life cycle and growth. FAO’s aquaculture guidance discusses species-specific temperature and water-quality conditions.

Researchers combine age information with a fish’s size to estimate growth. For many bony fish, they examine otoliths—small structures sometimes called “ear stones”—under magnification. Seasonal layers can form rings called annuli; a translucent layer and an opaque layer together represent a year of growth. Depending on the species, researchers may instead use scales, fin rays, bones, or vertebrae. NOAA Fisheries explains age and growth methods.

- 【hygger Aquarium Kit Includes】a 7W 110GPH internal power filter pump, a colored led aquarium light, a 8 gallon glass tank with a decorative 3D rockery mountain background. The 3D background makes the whole aquarium looks cool like a dream word underwater, is a great rest, play spot, shelters for little fish. Also you can plant some green grass on the rockery mountain.
- 【Mutil-modes LED Light】The aquarium led light is DC12V/18W, with extendable brackets, length can be adjusted from 0 to 19 inch. It has a external digital controller, you can use it to set the lighting time to 3, 6 or 12 hours, to adjust the light brightness from 100% to 10%, 5 levels of brightness in total, to shift the light modes: White LEDS, Blue+white+red LEDS, Red+ blue LEDS.
- 【Durable Power Filter】The aquarium power filter is 7W 110GPH, for 2-8 gallon tank use. It's a super quiet and durable filter, and can be use for low water, the upper part is the 2 stage filtration system, the bottom part is water pumping systerm to pump the water upward. Please NOTE this filter may be too strong for small fish that is not long than 2 inch, may suck small fish, if you keep small in the tank, please don't run the filter or don't run it all the time
- 【New View Curved Tank】Tank size: 19" L x 11.8" W x 9.6" H. This glass fish tank has a unique convex arc curve shape, can widen your view on the aquarium, and can hold more capacity of water. The total tank volume is 8 gallon, it can hold 6 gallon of water, because the tank has a undetachable 3D background decor. When it holds full water, the whole tank weighs about 68 pounds.
- 【Multi-protection Packing】We used 3 layers of packing to pack the aquarium kit and with light lifting label, the innermost layers is a super sturdy poly foam with excellent cushion. We have done the shipping test by sending 3 of the packs to 3 different distance places and find the glass tanks are still in good condition when received. So don't worry the tank will not be broken during the shipping, if you find tank broken when open the package, please take a photo and send it to the seller.
These are scientific estimates, not a way to infer an individual aquarium fish’s exact age from appearance alone. The best structure to use depends on the species.
Quick Recap
What to check when looking up a pet fish’s growth
- Species: Use the fish’s exact species rather than a broad label such as “tropical fish.”
- Starting point: Check whether the estimate begins at hatching, a juvenile stage, or a stated size.
- Endpoint: Confirm whether it describes length, weight, adult size, market size, or maturity.
- Conditions: Note whether the estimate assumes farming, wild habitat, or another specific setting, and what it says about temperature, food, water quality, and density.
- Time basis: Treat an estimate as specific to its stated species and conditions, not a promise for every individual.
