Do Fishhooks Hurt Fish? What the Science Says

Fishhooks cause real tissue injuries. Fish detect harmful stimuli, but whether they consciously feel pain remains scientifically debated; release survival depends on the fishery and handling.

Yes. A fishhook punctures tissue and can cause bleeding or other injury. Fish also detect damaging stimuli and respond to them, though scientists disagree about how conclusively those findings show a conscious experience of pain. Catch-and-release reduces neither the injury of hooking nor the risk of death to zero.

What a hook does to a fish

A hook is a penetrating object, so hooking can injure tissue. Studies have documented new and earlier hooking injuries, bleeding, and damage around the point of hook placement. A fish swimming away after release does not show that it was uninjured.

In one study of catch-and-release rainbow trout in Alaska, about 62% of captured fish had at least one new hooking injury and 29% had at least one previous hooking injury. Those figures describe that fishery and study, not all fish or fishing situations. Meka’s 2004 study also found that hook type, fish size, and angler experience were relevant to injury and capture duration.

Do fish feel pain when hooked?

The evidence supports a careful distinction between injury, nociception, and subjective pain. Nociception is the detection of potentially tissue-damaging stimuli; it is not, by itself, proof of a conscious feeling.

Researchers recorded nociceptors in rainbow trout and observed behavioral and physiological changes after noxious stimulation of the lips. That work supports the conclusion that fish register harmful stimuli, but it was not a direct experiment establishing what a hooked fish consciously feels. The 2003 study describes the sensory findings.

Interpretation remains disputed. A 2009 review by Lynne U. Sneddon and coauthors argued that the evidence supports pain perception under their approach, while a 2014 review by Steven J. Cooke and coauthors questioned whether the methods distinguish conscious pain from unconscious nociception. Sneddon’s review and the 2014 review reflect this disagreement. The defensible answer is that a hook causes real injury and likely noxious experience; whether and how a particular fish consciously feels pain cannot be directly reported or conclusively measured.

Can a fish survive catch-and-release?

Yes, many released fish survive, but release is not a guarantee. NOAA Fisheries notes that severe injury can cause immediate death, while stress or injury can also interfere later with feeding or digestion. NOAA’s discard and release mortality explainer describes both immediate and delayed effects.

Mortality varies substantially with species, hook location and depth, gear, handling, air exposure, water temperature, fight duration, and release conditions. A 2011 meta-analysis of freshwater recreational fisheries reported mean hooking mortality of 15.9% (standard error 1.3%), a median of 7.8%, and a range from 0% to 88.5% across 252 estimates from 107 studies. These pooled values show variation across the reviewed evidence; they are not an individual fish’s universal odds of dying. The authors also noted limited species-specific evidence. Hühn and Arlinghaus’s meta-analysis covers the estimates.

Do barbless hooks hurt fish less?

Barbless hooks can be easier to remove and may reduce handling time or removal injuries, but the evidence does not establish that they always reduce mortality. Outcomes differ by fishery, species, and gear.

Evidence What it found What it means
Alaskan catch-and-release rainbow trout, 2004 Barbless J hooks and circle hooks were associated with fewer injuries, but every hook type caused significant injury. Hook design may change injury risk without making hooking harmless. Meka, 2004.
Gulf of Mexico nearshore marine recreational fishery, 2002 Barbless hooks shortened average unhooking time and reduced unhooking injuries. Anglers landed 22% more fish with barbed hooks; the study concluded barbless hooks probably did not reduce hooking mortality in that fishery. Removal and landing outcomes can differ; this result should not be generalized to other fisheries. Schaeffer and Hoffman, 2002.
Wild rainbow, brown, and brook trout caught on spinners, 2004 Short-term hooking mortality was below 4%, and the study found no significant mortality advantage for single or barbless spinner hooks in that setting. This is a specific stream-trout and spinner result, not a general mortality rate. The 2004 study.

For a given fish, shallow mouth hooking is generally less difficult to manage than a swallowed or deep hook, where removal may cause more damage. Hook choice is only one factor: the fight, handling, air exposure, temperature, and—especially in deep-water fisheries—pressure-related barotrauma also affect release outcomes.

How to reduce avoidable harm when releasing a fish

No technique makes the puncture injury harmless, but careful choices can reduce additional trauma and handling. NOAA Fisheries recommends the following practices in its catch-and-release guidance:

  • Consider circle hooks, barbless hooks, or hooks with crimped barbs to make removal easier; check local rules, since some fisheries require particular hook designs.
  • Use non-stainless hooks, which can corrode and fall out if a fish escapes with one embedded.
  • Use tackle strong enough to land the fish promptly rather than fighting it to exhaustion.
  • Use a wet, soft knotless-mesh or rubber net to reduce damage to eyes, fins, scales, and protective mucus.
  • Keep the fish in the water for dehooking whenever possible. A dehooker can help release it with less handling.
  • If a swallowed hook cannot be removed easily, cut the line close to the hook rather than causing further damage by forcing it out.
  • If the fish must be out of water, NOAA identifies less than 60 seconds as the ideal air-exposure time. This is guidance, not a survival guarantee.
