People say “Hey bear” to make a bear aware that a person is nearby. The words are not a special command bears are known to understand: Alaska’s Department of Fish and Game says it does not matter what you say. The point is to announce yourself calmly and, when hiking, help avoid surprising a bear.
What “Hey bear” is meant to do
It is an audible announcement of human presence, not a phrase with a proven special effect. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game puts it plainly: “It doesn’t matter what you say,” though some people like saying, “Hey bear… why don’t you go away, bear.” The short phrase is an easy-to-remember way to make noise and identify yourself as a person.
People may call out before they see a bear, too. Yellowstone National Park recommends periodically yelling “Hey bear!” to alert bears to your presence and reduce the chance of surprising one. That is a precaution, not a guarantee that an encounter will be prevented. The sources cited here do not establish who first used the phrase or show that those exact words work better than other calm human speech.
What to do depends on whether the bear has noticed you
If the bear is distant and has not seen you
Do not approach it or automatically shout. Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore advises visitors to stay at least 150 feet (50 yards) away. If the bear has not noticed you, watch from a safe distance and detour quietly. That distance is specific to this park; follow the rules for the place you are visiting.

If the bear is close or has seen you
Stay calm, speak in a low, steady voice so it can recognize you as human, and back away slowly. Do not run. Sleeping Bear Dunes suggests phrases such as “Hey bear. Hello bear. I see you bear.” Michigan’s Department of Natural Resources likewise advises staying calm, not running, backing away slowly, and continually saying something like “hey bear.” Instructions can vary with the situation and location, so check the local park or wildlife agency’s guidance.
“Hey bear” is one part of bear safety
When hiking in bear country, Yellowstone recommends making noise to reduce surprise encounters and carrying bear spray where it is quickly reachable, such as in a waist or chest holster. Follow local guidance and learn how to carry and use your equipment. Calling out does not make an encounter safe by itself.
