Brett Levingston said a great white shark came within touching distance while he was diving off Queensland’s Moreton Island. He estimated it was about four metres long and recalled jabbing it in the head when it continued swimming toward him. The 2016 account describes a frighteningly close approach, but does not establish that the shark intended to attack.

What happened during the encounter?

In an account reported by ABC News, Gold Coast diver Brett Levingston recalled looking into the shark’s eyes as it swam directly toward him. He said his speargun was unloaded and that he jabbed the shark because it was not changing course. He described the impact as feeling “like hitting a brick wall.”

Levingston said the shark first swam past him, then circled below as he made his way toward his boat. He and his companions decided to move to another spot. He later said he was glad to have seen the shark, though he would not try to get so close again.

Where did it happen, and how large was the shark?

The encounter was reported off Moreton Island, Queensland. Levingston estimated the great white’s length at about four metres; that figure was his estimate as relayed by ABC News, not a measurement independently established in the report.

Did the shark attack the diver?

ABC News reported Levingston’s account of a close approach and his attempt to push the shark away. The report does not establish that the shark attacked, or explain why it approached and later circled below him. A single encounter cannot establish that great white sharks are generally aggressive or harmless.

What did Levingston say afterward?

Levingston said he and his companions were excited by the sighting, and that he would not forget it for a while. The report also conveys how close and unsettling the encounter felt to him; those descriptions reflect his recollection, not a determination of the shark’s intentions.
