On May 27, 2017, diver Dale Pearson encountered a great white shark in shallow water in Mexico’s Sea of Cortez, according to a report published by PerthNow on June 12, 2017. The report estimated the shark’s length at 4.2 metres, but did not identify a measuring authority or method.
What happened in the Sea of Cortez
PerthNow’s account, sourced from Caters, identifies Pearson and his companion, Eric Mack, as the people who encountered the shark. Pearson is described as an experienced diver and co-owner of Pearson Brothers Winery; the report does not give a formal diving qualification. It says the men were wading in thigh-deep water during the close approach, rather than describing them as scuba diving.

Pearson initially thought the animal was a hammerhead before he and Mack identified it as a great white. The report says the shark moved between the shallows and water about two metres deep. Pearson said, “To see such a huge shark in basically my front yard was quite unnerving.”
What Pearson observed—and what remains uncertain
The shark’s reported size
PerthNow estimated the shark at 4.2 metres. The report does not name who measured it or explain how, so that figure is a reported estimate, not a scientifically documented measurement.

Visible injuries
The account describes two visible injuries, including one below the dorsal fin. Pearson saw no rope or net entanglement marks and suspected a propeller or outboard motor might have caused the wounds. That was his guess; the report offers no confirmed cause.
Possible feeding behaviour
Pearson believed the shark was feeding on stingrays. The report does not independently verify that interpretation. Pearson and Mack left after stingrays nearby stung them.

Why the encounter was not described as a stranded shark
Although the shark was in very shallow water, Pearson concluded it was not stuck and had control over where it went. The account therefore describes an animal moving through shallow water, not a confirmed stranding.
Pearson said he had completed several dive projects involving great whites but had never seen anything like this. He also said he was not worried the shark would attack, while keeping enough distance to respect its potential to strike. The report does not establish a broader lesson about shark behaviour from this single encounter.
